“Archaic beauty” is rooted in the fragmentation and loss in Park’s life; it is an aesthetic that consists of multiple connotations and is born from struggle and negative space. For the artist, it is about finding a contingent in-between space: a place that is in between both the old and new and the past and present. Park’s archaic beauty series evokes powerful emotions, particularly nostalgia. The art is suffused with a sentiment of loss and displacement while also being a romantic fantasy of the past. Combining the old with the new, as well as pairing absence and presence, tradition and innovation, Park explores questions of identity, belonging and the search for a harmonious world. His Archaic Beauty series offers solace and a longing for continuity in an increasingly fragmented society.
