Exercises to engage baby’s head in the pelvis - How to get a baby to drop in the pelvis

As part of your body’s preparation for labor, your baby’s head is going to engage in your pelvis. But unfortunately, sometimes, the baby has no plans whatsoever to engage in the pelvis. So, the question is, what can you do when that’s the case?
In this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, explain their 5 steps protocol which is supposed to help you get your baby to drop.
Their protocol consists of exercises and acupressure. It is divided into a preparation phase which includes exercises that are supposed to prepare your body for the engagement of baby’s head. This includes an exercise to open the hips as well as an exercise to create a better environment in the womb. Both will make it easier for the baby to drop.
And then there is also an engagement phase. This phase includes exercises which are supposed to help your baby find a better way to engage the head in the pelvis as well as exercises to help the baby descend in the pelvis. Moreover, the engagement phase also includes acupressure which is supposed to support the whole process of engaging the baby’s head in the pelvis.

    Hi there 😊, first of all, thanks so much for your very lovely feedback!! We are very happy to hear that you find our content helpful - it's the best compliment a channel can get! 😊❤️ 👍 Regarding your case: It's difficult to tell what's going on in your womb. However, one option is that your baby has dropped, particularly, when looking at the signs that you observe... Please note that it CAN happen sometimes that babies drop very early (week 32). In most cases, that's absolutely fine. In very very very rare cases though it COULD be a sign that your body prepares for preterm labor. Because of that, we would talk with your midwife about the signs that you observe. Maybe this information is relevant to them (depending on your pregnancy case). Regarding your other question: in THEORY, a baby can always go back into a breech presentation after being cephalic. However, we would not worry about that. Because now, you know that nothing prevents your baby from turning. If baby has done it once, baby can do it again! We do hope that our answers help you! We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, first of all, thanks SO MUCH for your feedback!! 😘 We are super happy to hear that our videos helped you turn your baby! 😊 These exercises could certainly help engage your baby. The only question is in how far the level of amniotic fluid plays a role in your baby's current (unengaged) position. Sometimes, we have cases of polyhydramnios where it's just very difficult to make this work. However, these are really "extreme" cases of "too much amniotic" fluid. On the other hand, if your baby was able to turn, then it is also likely that these exercises will help you engage your baby... I am so worried this might cause malpresentation that will cause complications, is there any way to fix her face positioning and make sure her chin tucked in before labor? This makes me scare to do any exercise that might cause her head engaged when her face still tilt in this position 😭 Thank you so much beforehand for all of your informative videos 🥰🥰

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, we completely understand that you are worried about your baby's position. However, please don't be! Your baby has still time to move into a better position. Moreover, even if labor starts, such a "malposition" often resolve by itself - if you give your body the time. We also understand that you are too scared to do any exercises that might cause your baby's head to engage. However, it's exactly that - exercises and positions - which could help your baby move into a better position. The most important one is the forward leaning position (knee to elbow) that we describe in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2yTrLaQcbateNo.html (skip everything else in this video as long as your baby is not in a better position). The knee-to-elbow position can help your baby move into a better position because your provide your baby with more room in your womb to do so... There is also an alternative approach of the knee to elbow position which we explain in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2GfypinqKrRc84.html. It allows you to remain in that position for longer. That said, please always ask your provider first if it is okay to do these exercises, as obviously only they know your pregnancy case... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😘, we are not gonna lie to you: it is very difficult to naturally induce labor at 37 weeks. At that time, your cervix only just starts to soften. And a soft cervix is a prerequisite for natural labor induction. The question is, however: why not try an induction first? Why go straight for a C-section? So, one thing we recommend doing is that you get a second opinion! Let another doctor confirm that your placenta is indeed that calcified that you require a C-section. And then also discuss with them, if an induction is not a better option! We hope this helps! 😘 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

What do you suggest us to do to get baby engaged

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, first of all, please keep in mind that some babies only engage very late in a pregnancy. In fact, some only do it hours before labor starts (or even after labor has started). We have some more information on this in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqip2NmIdse2eKQ.html But to help the baby engage, you are already on the right video! If there is an exercise that can help a baby engage, then it's certainly deep squats (which we show in this video). Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that it helps though. There are at least 10 reasons why a baby may simply not be able to engage. However, those cases are very rare.... No reason to be worried about those cases right now... Has your wife already tried the exercises from this video?

    Hi there 😊, so, just that we got that right: First, your doctor told you that the baby is engaged. And then later, he told you baby is not engaged anymore? Is that right? If so, we can only recommend getting a second opinion! It is best to have a second person confirm the status of baby's engagement. We PARTICULARLY recommend getting a second opinion, if your doctor tells you that your wife needs a C-section BECAUSE baby is not engaged. The lack of engagement is not a reason for a C-section (unless there are medical problems of course). So, please consider getting a second opinion! If baby is indeed not engaged, then you can find helpful tips and tricks in the video you commented on! However, please also keep in mind that some babies only engage very late (sometimes hours before labor starts). And sometimes they only engage AFTER labor has started... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you, your wife and your baby!! ❤️

    Hai, I am 37 weeks pregnant. Before 2 days I found that baby is not engaged and head is floating. Is it possible to have a vaginal delivery? Will baby get engaged and drops down. It's already in cephalic presentation for past 5 weeks. I am walking for 2 hours a day and climbing around 250 steps. Added Yoga and squats of I am not tired. Shall I continue with these exercises and add these exercises too?!

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, first of all, please note that it is normally still possible to have a normal vaginal delivery, even when baby is not engaged. Second, some babies only engage HOURS before labor starts, some even afterwards. This is different from woman to woman, so please, do not be worried just yet! There is still plenty of time 😊. If you are already so active, then you don't need to add anything else. You are already doing a great job! The only thing we can think of is seeing a chiropractor to support the process. However, please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that it works... Also, when you do squats, make sure it's deep squats, as only deep squats can help the baby engage... Otherwise, stay positive! If your baby is head down, it's only a matter of time til baby drops! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there Mara 😘, we are sorry to hear that you go through so many things... 😬 So first of all, it very much sounds like your baby has dropped already. This will increase the pressure in your pelvis and could explain the many things that you feel. On top of that (or in addition), it could also be a problem of pelvic girdle pain, particularly, if it hurts to get up from a couch or bad. Sometimes, it can also be that the baby is not in an optimal position when baby has dropped which could also explain many of these problems. Given the discharge that you observe and also because of the fact that it could be that your baby has dropped already, we recommend talking with your midwife. But to be clear: the things that you experience could be totally normal, so there is not necessarily a reason to be worried. However, it would be great to have a confirmation from your midwife or provider... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, we are not gonna lie to you: with polyhydramnios it is more difficult to help a baby engage. However, we know many women who successfully made their baby engage with these exercises. The good news is also that the level of amniotic fluid reaches its peak around 35 weeks. Afterwards, the level declines which is probably what you observe right now. Therefore, these exercises are probably more likely going to work for you at later stages of your pregnancy. Actually, independent of the level of amniotic fluid, we would not try them before week 36 (or week 35 if you include the preparation week). Hi there 😊, so, given the fact that you have a score of 4 only, it also means that your cervix is not yet well prepared for labor. But don't worry! In some women, it just takes a bit longer. However, there are tools that can help you support the process. We talk about them in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html We'd also like to refer you to our other video, which is about the best "sitting position" to support the whole "going into labor" process: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWmp2sirYLywj6g.html And finally, regarding the exercises: It depends a bit on you WHEN during the day you do them. For example, some women feel nauseas in the morning, even that late in their pregnancy. Therefore, they are more likely gonna do them in the afternoon. However, normally, we do them twice per day (in the morning and in the afternoon) unless of course your doctor told you that you cannot do these exercises... We really hope they will help you! 😊 By the way: sometimes, a chiropractor could help as well... We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, while it is crucial for a normal delivery that your baby DOES engage at SOME point, we clearly want to point out that some babies only engage AFTER labor has started. In other words, not every baby engages before labor has started. Only recently, we had such a case: the baby was not engaged, but labor started. Only 5 hours into active labor, the baby finally engaged. And the mother eventually delivered a healthy baby. So, please always keep that in mind! 😊 Also, we have had cases of babies who had 4kg+ and still engaged eventually. So, it is not possible to say, for example, a baby of 3kg+ cannot engage. It really depends on your overall case. The best is not too worry too much! You will only know how it goes once you are in labor.... We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, it depends a bit on the hospital policy and your pregnancy case in how far a check-up is required. So, this is difficult for us to answer... Generally speaking, if there are no medical complications and if you are feeling well and if there have not been any complications in your pregnancy, a checkup is not required. It is basically just a waiting game until you go into labor... But of course, if you feel unwell, if you are worried about the health of your baby or your own health, please do talk with your doctor about it! Hey there! Commenting for first time though I watch your videos regularly. • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Hi there 😊, so, here is the thing: when baby is head down, baby is not necessarily in a position where baby's back is exactly in the center of your belly. The back can also be more on the left or the right side. So that's that. Now, if you feel baby's head on the other side (than the back), then it COULD be that baby is indeed in an oblique position. However, of course, only a doctor can confirm this. If that is really the case, we would not worry too much though! So far, we have seen hardly any cases when oblique presentations are a problem for a normal delivery. The most important thing is that your baby is head down. Also, you can (normally) easily support your baby find a better position with the help of birth ball exercises (kzread.info/dash/bejne/imensbGbob2uorw.html). Hi there 😊, unfortunately, there is little you can do! It is up to your doctor to closely monitor what's going on in your womb. In fact, normally, in such a case, you will have a scan every 4 weeks. You may also require certain additional supplements. But unfortunately, this is something only your doctor can tell you - based on your pregnancy case. We are sorry that we cannot be a better help here... 😬 Finally, we just want to add that such pregnancies do not necessarily lead to complications. You can have perfectly healthy babies despite this "condition"... We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, in theory, even ONE day could be enough to help a baby engage (with deep squats). However, please keep in mind that there are many factors which play a role here. Therefore, there is never a guarantee that it works - not even within a longer period of time. For example, sometimes, a chiropractor has to do their magic first, before a baby is able to engage - it all depends on your body... Hie, thanks a lot for uploading such informative videos. I'm 39 weeks + 4 days and 1 cm dilated. I lost my mucus plug a day back as well. However, my AFI is 4 and my doctor has given me 2 days before she medically induces me. I have tried all your labour induction methods (excluding sex because I'm 1 cm dilated) but none of them seem to work. I had 3 false contractions, that's it. Also, baby's head is not engaged yet because baby is at a slightly different angle than the pelvis. Could you please help me out? I just have a day left to naturally induce.

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, we are not gonna lie to you: it is really very difficult to induce labor if you are under time pressure. Stress and labor induction are two things which "don't like each other". That said - in our experience - the one thing that tends to work even in such situations is Castor oil. However, it is important to note that Castor oil won't work for every woman. Moreover, it does require the approval of your doctor. So, if your doctor approves the intake of Castor oil, it is something that COULD help you induce labor fast, particularly, if you combine it with other tools, such as nipple stimulation. But again, inducing labor naturally under time pressure is a very very difficult task... Still, we hope this information helps you... 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, please note that babies often either engage very LATE in a pregnancy or AFTER labor has started. Even if a baby only engages after labor has started, it is normally not a problem as long as baby engages eventually... Therefore, we are always surprised to hear whenever a doctor tells anyone that they cannot have a normal delivery - just because baby is not engaged before labor has even started (unless there are medical reasons of course). Of course, we are not able to tell you what to do. This can only be done by a doctor. Therefore, we can only recommend that you get a second opinion by another OB. Thank you! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Once a baby is engaged is it still possible for them to spin ti face the right direction?

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, yes and no. It really depends on the size of baby's head vs the size of your pelvis. Because of that, oftentimes, a baby does not engage as long as baby is not facing the back. But in general, it is possible. That said, ideally, baby moves into a better position first before baby engages: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaOpqZVmobmnmNI.html. If baby is already engaged, we often see that it is easier to help baby's head out of the pelvis first, help him/her move into a better position and then to help baby re-engage again. But we are not gonna lie to you: this is not an easy task.... and it is certainly nothing that can be accomplished in a short period of time... Hi there 😊, it's like this: very often, labor starts within 2-4 weeks after baby has engaged, that's right. However, these are just average numbers. It does not necessarily mean that labor will indeed start in that time frame, just because a baby has engaged... Every pregnancy is different... We have met lots of women whose baby dropped before week 36. And yet, they went into labor only around their due date and delivered a perfectly healthy baby. Nevertheless, whenever it happens before week 36, we recommend that you let your doctor or midwife know! Again, normally, there is no reason to worry. However, it could be relevant, depending on your pregnancy history and your pregnancy case.... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

For example, the shape of the pelvis, the size of the head, the location of the placenta etc. HOWEVER: we also want to point out that sometimes, babies only engage AFTER labor has started (or hours before it starts). Hi there 😊, you are MOST WELCOME!! We are happy if you find our videos helpful! 😊 Regarding your question: First of all, please don't worry! Some babies only engage hours before labor starts (or even afterwards), particularly, if this is your second. So, no need to worry that your baby has not yet engaged... That said, the protocol that we show in this video can certainly help you engage your baby. We do it all the time in women at 38 weeks and even later, although we often shorten the preparation phase to 3 days only at that stage. However, please keep in mind that - whether or not this is going to work - also depends on certain factors, such as your baby's position. For example: if your baby is occiput posterior (i.e. facing your front instead of your back), it might be very difficult for your baby to engage. In that case, it would be better to first help baby into a better position before trying anything to engage baby. It will pay off, once you are in labor... The other thing is: very often, we are only able to help baby engage with the help of a chiropractor. So that too could be an option, if our protocol does not work... We really hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Pregnancy hormones can sometimes really "mess up" the body and not every woman experiences a pregnancy in the same way! 😊 However, if it hurts when you pee and if you experience vaginal itchiness, it could point to other issues! Hi there Angela 😊, did your midwife not recommend any particular positions/exercises to help the baby get into a better position? In cases like yours, we would normally focus on the first two exercises to help the baby get into a better position (particularly position 2 - knee to chest). Deep squats will not help right now. However, please also discuss this with your midwife because maybe there are good reasons why you should not do these exercises, particularly, if she has not mentioned any such exercises to you... Not sure how easy it is to get labor started in this situation, even with your cocktail 😊 But if it does work out, then the contractions will normally also do the job and get your baby into a better position. And there are exercises that can support that process once you are in labor, which hopefully your midwife will show you (unfortunately, we have not yet recorded any videos on this topic)... We hope this helps... We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️
