Exercises for a SLAP tear to help you recover quickly

A SLAP tear of the shoulder is a tear of the labrum at the superior aspect of the glenoid (or top of the shoulder). Also known as a superior labral tear, it is frequently seen in pitchers and other throwing and overhead athletes. It is also seen in contact and collision sports in which an athlete is hit on the shoulder or lands on the shoulder or outstretched arm. Initially, management can focus on rehabilitation of the shoulder. Sometimes surgery is needed to clean up the tear or reattach it with stitches and anchors. Often doing some exercises for a SLAP tear can relieve your pain and allow you to get back to what you love to do.

Yeah you really have to be your own doctor because most doctors don't give a shit about you. I got an MRI and they didn't even look at it...I would have had to schedule another appointment and pay like $200 to have someone read a report to me like I'm 6 years old... And I already had the report. Complete waste of time and money.

Two questions. On the first exercise on the bench with the plate and the arm straight, how many reps and sets should I do? As an exerciser that does front raises, I didn’t really feel much on that one. And lastly, when are these supposed to start making a difference? I’m on the incline bench right now. Just did these for the first time, and I can’t tell a difference in my incline bench shoulder pain. I know one day isn’t going to do it, but how hard should I hit it, ya know?

Injured my shoulder 3 months ago doing Hammer Strength rows at the gym. I tried rest & inactivity for 6 weeks but the pain/discomfort/loss of mobility/instability didn't get any better. Decided to finally see an orthopedist and get a MRI which revealed a type II SLAP tear from 10 o'clock to 1 o'clock. He suggested surgery (biceps tenodesis due to my age, I'm 46) as an option if PT doesn't help. My followup appt with the doctor is in 4 weeks. A seasoned PT at my job has SLAP tears on both shoulders and told me that under no circumstances should I consider surgery for it. I've read so many articles, testimonials, message boards etc over the past week that I don't know if I'm coming or going. This has all gotten so confusing. All I know is that I just want back normal (or as close to normal as I can get) use of my right shoulder and give zero shits about being able to lift weights again at this point. But I don't want to go under the knife unless I absolutely have to. So I'm going to take the trainer's advice and be patient & consistent with PT using fitness bands & doing range of motion work to strengthen the shoulder and see how it goes. He told me it can take 6 months or longer. If he could do it then I guess I can too. I'll be sure to give the movements in this video a shot as well. Everyone else who's suffering with this has my sympathies.

@@andresdelatorre4275 Tbh I don't think it ever will be 100%. I'm hoping not but it's been almost a year. I will say though, strengthening the muscles around it helps significantly, however I always need to mindful of it when working out, which we should anyway. Recently I was hitting golf balls lol and swong pretty hard and it slightly tore again and was sore for a few days. But when it was at it's worst when it was first torn I'd say it took close to a month. I was lazy about stretching and exercising cause I was disappointed at the situation but I'm sure you be ready to get at it again with consistent stretching/treatment in less time. Hope that clears things for you, just take a break from training and stretch it everyday, be mindful of the position you put it in even in daily tasks and avoid heavy lifting in that arm, maybe go on walks to stay active if exercise was important to you.

@@codycarnes3535 hey man, idk if you’re having the same issues as the guy above, but if you have a torn labrum, it’s probably best to wait for you to not feel the pain before doing the exercises. When your labrum is in pain there may be some inflammation in that area which would increase the chances of the shoulder coming out of socket. Furthermore, it’s best not to irritate something that’s already aggravated. If you have constant pain, then I’d recommend doing more range of motion stuff then adding in more resistance training for your shoulder. Btw I’m by no means a doctor, but I have been doing physical therapy for my shoulders for about 7 years and have learned a lot from that. So I hope it helps
