Exercise for Building Self Confidence and Overcoming Self-Doubt as an Artist

Do you ever struggle with feeling inadequate as an artist?
In your life as an artist, it’s common to struggle with artistic confidence, to doubt yourself or your work, never feeling like you are quite good enough. There’s even something called “imposter syndrome” where you aren’t even sure you are worthy call yourself an artist or feel afraid you don’t measure up to other artists. Building your self-esteem through art can be done and takes some attention and some simple practices such as the exercise I’m sharing here. It’s important to take time to address these feelings as they arise rather than sweep them under the carpet until, unnoticed, they snowball into a full blown Artist’s Block. You might think of these types of exercises like your creative hygiene.

Well said Michelle! Thank you for getting up on your “soapbox”, haha. Your words were poignant as they reminded me of my college creative writing teacher who did not like my work. Because I was raised by a narcissist and my creativity squashed in my youth, I allowed this “final blow” to stop me cold in my tracks. Lesson learned: Never ever let critics stop you. I just discovered you. I haven't scoured through everything yet, but i have this pressing thought that i hope you're well! I normally do not like when guidance discusses less pragmatic aspects in helping, but this really speaks to me, and IS in fact, pragmatic! Wut u said about personal vision and each persons unique contribution resonated w me.. not caring if u don't personally like it has been a bit of a hurdle for me as I can be a perfectionist. I'm starting to learn after having a large religious work on permanent display in my local church that even when u as the artist r not 100% happy w the work others can have a very deep experience/connection with the work. In just ur short video u have made me aware of the responsibility I have to produce art on a more regular basis -even when I don't feel up to the task. Tyvm!

That's so wonderful that you have a piece on display at your local church and that people are connecting deeply with it and I am sure will for years to come. Congratulations! I am glad this message resonated with you. I had to remind myself of this VERY thing recently. Was feeling dissatisfied and had to remember pieces that other people liked that I hadn't so much and just let everything go and MAKE THE WORK!

Hi Michele. I found that taking a picture of my piece seems to help seeing my work thru new eyes which really helps.
