Still unbelievable how any father could do such a thing to his own child. God bless and RIP Timothy.
Such a lovely boy, so glad he was not buried near his horrid father. Drive safe, Lamont.
My Dad was a kid back then a little older than the little boy. He said after that the next years of Halloween were never the same. There was always a lot of caution after that.
My birthday is on Halloween. I was in the 6th grade at Southmore Intermediate at the time. When the Pasadena police went to Southmore hospital, they were already suspicious of the dad because of the way he was acting. What struck me as odd is that nobody ever gave out giant pixie stix. That would have been expensive. Occasionally, you would get small pixie stix in your Halloween bag.
Lord God, how can anyone kill your own child. They’re so innocent they take whatever you give them to take. I never heard of this story. Thank you Lamont. You’re right, he’s a monster. take care and be safe. Rest in peace little angel.
I can't wrap this around my head how anybody can hurt or kill a child. I have a 20 year young daughter. She is my life. She is the reason I get up every morning and go to work. I'm so blessed to have her. RIP Timothy. You are in God's loving arms.

Hi, Lamont! Sadly, these days with vehicle accidents, school shootings, freak accidents, various Illnesses/Diseases...and murder, Life Insurance has become VERY necessary for children these days. Funerals for children are just as expensive as for Adults. We don't like to think about Mortality: our parents, kids, grandkids, or ourselves...even our pets, but it is crucial, so the ones left behind are not burdened with Final Expenses. Of course, I'm NOT talking about parents who kill their children for money.

Hi, Lamont. I lived in Houston when this happened and remembered this. After this, parents wouldn't allow their kids to have pixie sticks, candy apples, popcorn balls, anything that wasn't commercially wrapped and sealed tight so the candy companies actually benefited from O'Bryan's deeds. During the execution debate, nany anti-DP forces went to bat for O'Bryan saying the electric chair was "cruel and unusual" punishment and then lethal injection was "cruel and unusual" punishment. At one point the sentencing judge scheduled his execution for October 31st - Halloween. But the ACLU got involved, objecting that executing him on the anniversary of the murder was "cruel and unusual" punishment. It got moved again to another day.
That's so sad, I lived the 70s and we never had to worry bout these things, I'm sure glad he was found out
We still check kids' candy at Halloween....I just never knew why this became a thing. Thank you for telling his son's story. RIP to that little boy. How horrifying.
I got the Gerber life insurance policy on my daughter when she was born. They gave me the information at the hospital. I thought it was normal. My parents had policies on all 9 of us children. They never tried to off any of us though. I guess they figured we were reckless enough to do ourselves.😄

I read newspaper reports of this story at the time it happened and it was written that on Sunday night after his son died but before he was arrested, he led his church service in a heartfelt choir hymn. There was not a dry eye in the house. I think that I read that he was a pharmacist. He was known as the ‘candy man’.

It was at Second Baptist Pasadena. I knew him. I grew up in that church. He didn’t lead a hymn that night. He sang a solo. Before he sang he told the congregation that there was nothing more tragic that could have happened to him and his wife than losing their son. This man was a deacon and drove a church bus on Sundays. I was 12 years old when Tim died. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Actually, life insurance for children is common. Do you remember the old ad for Gerber life insurance? That has been around for years and years. It is just one of many. My parents had small policies for myself and siblings.(my parents were lower middle-class)They gave us the policy when we left home. Possibly it is more common in certain areas of the country, but it is more common than you think.
Rest in peace Timothy. Thank you for including archival photos of these places.

Never worked but could pay for Insurance on his children. Shame on him.
These were the killer’s last words: “What is about to transpire in a few moments is wrong! However, we as human beings do make mistakes and errors. This execution is one of those wrongs yet doesn't mean our whole system of justice is wrong. Therefore, I would forgive all who have taken part in any way in my death.” He had the audacity to utter words that showed he took no accountability for his actions.
What a scum bag to do that to his son,it makes me sick how people could do something like that to your own children Bless you tim Rip😇😇😇😇
I was in the army when this took place in my home town. When I got out I became a letter carrier. It was creepy delivering mail in that well to do neighborhood. Wow it has really run down. I remember all the streets were named after horses that were triple crown winners. We called them the horse race streets.
I don’t remember this particular story but i do remember the fear we had in the 80s when it came to Halloween candy. My parents checked EVERY SINGLE PIECE. I know you can’t find everything, particularly when it comes to drugs or poisoning, but I do remember there being an incident with razor blades being put into the candy.
Thank you Lamont for telling the story about this childs demise I cant imagine how any parent could murder their own! I just hope he's resting in peace I know his father wont be. Love from the UK x

Thanks for covering this sad story by walking through where this young boy lived, died and was buried. It just made it more real but I do remember this awful crime and the chilling influence it had on Halloween for years after the murder.
