The Woman Who Joined the Taliban tells the story of Beverley Giesbrecht, a Canadian Muslim convert who saw herself as a bridge between two warring cultures. Giesbrecht was a successful Canadian publishing executive and devout Christian living near Vancouver, before the events of September 11th 2001 changed her life forever.
After converting to Islam, Beverley Giesbrecht (also known as Khadija Abdul Qahaar) launched a website with the intention of presenting an alternate view of militant Islam. As a journalist, she travelled to a very dangerous place, the Taliban-controlled mountains of Pakistan, to make a first-person documentary. Within seven months, Giesbrecht was on a path that would lead to her kidnapping and disappearance in the Taliban heartlands.
Produced by Vanessa Dylyn and Matter of Fact Media, this documentary sets out to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding Beverley Giesbrecht's kidnapping amidst Islamic fundamentalism, shifting allegiances and political intrigue in the lawless tribal territories on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
With exclusive access to the video footage shot by Giesbrecht herself, this mesmerizing documentary follows her journey into the heart of the Taliban, and her transformation from an admirer and defender of jihadist Islamism to disillusionment, until her final betrayal by her Taliban protector. Interesting doco, I'm interested in knowing why she felt she could be the saviour of the Taliban. I can't believe how naive she was and how much of a her own trip she was on without understanding there were real dangers and consequences. She didn't know the culture or language and her expectations were unrealistic. What played out was exactly what she was proving to be wrong. However, that doesn't mean though that she shouldn't have been helped by the Canadian government, after all she was a human being and their citizen. Sad really.🙏🏽

Even though she converted to Islam her mindset was still 100% westerner. There wasn’t a docile bone in her it appears and I understand why they would doubt her. Of course I’m not condoning what happened to her but try to imagine if the roles were reversed. I love our western citizens (most of them at least) but I’m also not blinded to the atrocities our governments have conducted in the name of ____ fill in the blank. Maybe someday the western country’s will start minding their own business and actively attempt to fix our problems. Instead of assuming they know how others should live. May she be at peace now and May those that love her also find some form of peace too.

Speaking as an American revert, some born Muslims don’t respect us as much as themselves. They don’t view us as equals. I don’t know what she was thinking going to another country, in a time of war, and expecting them to have any real trust or respect for her. Not saying she didn’t deserve those things, but she did not know these people. Even with being a Muslim, she overstayed her welcome. I think she lacked respect for the community, or culture, she was going into. As well as the situation. I can’t blame the Canadian government for not paying the ransom. She knew what she was doing. And she did not fully accept the ways of the extremist Islam she was claiming to support. Obviously, I do not agree with what the Taliban did and what those liars are still doing. But you cannot do the things that she was doing. It’s not polite. It wasn’t honest. It’s not a way to build trust for any relationship let alone a business relationship. Not everyone is born American, or Canadian, but that does not make them bad.

@@TheBritt you actually converted to Islam AFTER reading the Quran, Hadiths and sunnahs?? Hmmm. If you did then it's a shame that you have willingly submitted yourself to following a "god" who gives old men the "right" to take pre-pubescent g!rls as "wives"(the "relationship" of mohammad and Aisha, Quran 65:4). A "god" who gives men the "right" to be@t their "wives"(Quran 4:34). If you are a woman, you will basically be a s3x doll in the "paradise" of allah. Or if you are a man, you will be given an endless p3nise and have orgasm that last 70 years. Did you actually convert for these things or were you fed the lies of the dawah gangs????

It was tragic and anyone could see she died in pain. But the Islamic culture in Afghanistan is medieval with the Taliban in control. Only in Western countries can Muslim women can fulfill their dreams and potential. She went to a country that is beyond the reach of civilized governments and non-government organizations.
