EXCLUSIVE | Stock picking is a matter of logic: John Bogle

With much talk of stock picking as a way to wealth creation, John Bogle of The Vanguard Group, simplifies the art of identifying stocks as a matter of logic. For him, there is no such thing as a stock pickers' market. Watch his exclusive interview on the sidelines of Morningstar Conference.

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I admire the financial independence of people, But you can live better if you work a little more. After watching this I think there are people out there, on the extreme, who plan to die early just to be able to retire early. To each their own but to me, retirement isn't just about not having to work, it's about having the freedom to do whatever you might reasonably want, such as travel, buying things, enjoying life, etc. I don't think I could retire with less than $3m in income-generating investments, maybe $2m at the very minimum. I plan to work until I'm at least 45

They contribute to long term of stocks, the compounding power. Age based formula: If you are 90, 90% bonds and 10% stocks. Or just keep 50-50. I can't see how logic has any bearing on why stocks in one sector will be popular one year and why stocks in another will be popular in the next. Or why after 5 years of stock growth you decide to invest for the first time and in your first year performance across the stock markets is poor. Where's the logic there? There isn't.

In that case having the s&p500 wouldn`t have saved you. The whole economy collapsed. However, if you are compounding your dividends constantly and you refrain from selling, you are now going to be able to buy way more shares using your dividends, given the lower price they now have. Then over time it will all go back up in price so you`ll still end up richer, with a bit of patience. Of course there are stocks that can resist better than others to crisis, which is exactly why warren buffet does not diversify but concentrates his portfolio in a few, great businesses. And he buys them undervalued too. He does outperform the market but he knows what he`s doing. Hope this helped :)

@@diseasefire Both Buffett and Bogle advise against stock picking. When they refer to dividends it's in the growth plan of an index fund. Diversification is across asset classes. Like stocks and bonds. For stocks they only recommend the S&P 500. Also Buffet has underperformed the market for s long time now, it's his success early on which is why he is so rich. But he has not outperformed the index for more than a decade now.
