Excess pressure on a curved surface of liquid // Surface Tension
Chapter : Surface Tension : What do you mean by excess pressure on a curved surface of liquid ?
Surface tension(S) acts along tangentially on a curved surface of liquid.
The resultant of rectangular components of surface tension i-e., n.S. cos θ
acts towards the centre of curvature of the curved surface of liquid and the surface has tendency to become more flat under the action of this resultant force due to surface tension.
In order that the curved surface of liquid may be in equilibrium , there must be an excess pressure on its concave side over the convex side, so that the excess pressure may balance the resultant of rectangular components of surface tension.
* We know that the similar molecules of a liquid attract each other by a force of cohesion and force of surface tension, tangentially to the liquid surface at rest. Hence it can be concluded that excess pressure is less on a convex meniscus.
