"Excavation of the Donner Party Site: On The Trail of Tragedy" (1994) - U.S. Forest Service Film

Ойын-сауық

On April 15th 1846 - More than 178 years ago - the families of James Reed and George and Jacob Donner departed from Springfield, Illinois to start a new life in California. About 100 miles from Independence, Missouri the group of 31 joined a larger wagon train. The trip was long, hardships were many and roads and trails were intermittent, muddy and sometimes non-existent
As fall gave way to winter and the party still slowly heading to California, one of the worst tragedies in American travel occurred during the westward migration. Travelers had about 123 days to go 2,200 miles and be on the other side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains before October ended. If not, they ran the risk of being stranded in artic-like conditions.

The Forest Service employee is a true historian and has an archeological mind. He thought about past events on the site, present, and most telling to me he brought up the future. He wanted to keep the site somewhat undisturbed for future archeologists to have a go at it.

The Ric Burns 1996 documentary is fantastic. This is a bit corny. The whole "cannibalism" thing seems to be a gimmick for some of them. There's nothing funny or lighthearted about it.
