Examining The Fear Effect Series
Ойындар
Fear Effect is one of the more interesting RE clones to pop up in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Fear Effect has a heavy focus on puzzles, gun combat, and instant deaths. Fear Effect pulled heavily from Chinese Mythology, splashes of Cyberpunk, John Woo and heist films, and plenty of fan service.
Fear Effect made use of looping videos as backgrounds compared to static prerenders and was a bit ahead of the curve with its cel-shaded approach to its graphics.

While not a huge seller, Fear Effect has its share of a devoted audience, yours truly included.
And after seeing the upcoming remake of the first title, Fear Effect Reinvited, which doesn't look overly promising, it got me thinking about the series and taking a look back on it. While it has its share of frustrations, there are plenty of fun and memorable moments and a unique flavor that has helped the Fear Effect series stand out.
In this video we'll look at the following:
• Fear Effect
• Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix
• The Cancelled Fear Effect: Inferno
• Fear Effect Sedna
• The future of the series with Fear Effect: Reinvented

You really unlocked a memory with this one. I remember seeing this as a kid and being wowed by how expressive the characters were in a video game.

@@MadaraUchiha-ly8wr it's a shame that same dev who have been slammed for sedna had a stunning 1 to 1 build of the original now they have been axed due to Bankruptcy and now we are getting a re style remake of fear effect , I feel this has been a forced move by the publishers but can't say for sure

@@masontrevelyan2254 I'm shocked to know they didn't get enough funding support for Sedna. Fear effect actually gives similar taste as Resident evil. Regardless of the matter Fear effect 2 saved a piece of my childhood back in early 2000.
The cell shading and game over animations were way ahead of its time
I remember playing this years ago and being blown away by the design and characters. Its still crazy how good it looks for a late ps1 game. I wish sedna could've rebooted the franchise into the spotlight again, but i guess kickstarting games isn't the way to go :\ I had no idea there was a remake of the first game happening, i really hope it turns out well or at least gives us a chance to seeing more from the series in the future

what about sedna it’s basically third sequel
Didn't even watch the video yet, but I have a story: I was once stuck on the coin puzzle on the third disk when I was ~8 years old. I literally guessed everyday for at least 1 hour to try and figure it out. 1 year later, I brute forced the combination, without ever knowing the resolution to the puzzle. Years later, I replayed the game again, and figured out that the woman dancing on the TV was the sequence to the puppet combination. Looking back on it, it's a really deceiving puzzle that could easily be overlooked.
That third game looked really good. It's a shame it never came out.

I know, this annoys me to this day. I would atleast settle for a demo of it.
"Most of us had been influenced by the visual or the feeling from Blade Runner, Bubble Gum Crisis, Akira, Ghost in the Shell,Matrix and all John Woo's movies. I wanted fear effect to provoke emotions to the player, to make him laugh, cry and scream. I didn't want a game that was designed for the people whose goal was like, how many zombies I killed in three hours or when I 'll reach the last upgrade." - Stan Liu.
Such an under appreciated gem. Both games have engaging stories, colorful characters, and a difficulty curve to match its awesomeness.
congratulations! you are the only horror channel that covered Fear Effect, I would've thought someone would resurrect this series but no one else seems to know it exists. Btw have you played the originals on PSN or are you playing on easy? you said Fear Effect 1 was easy but it is probably the hardest game I've ever played and I was always at next to zero ammo. Maybe the emulator modded it somehow or maybe your just better at games than me(hardly out of the question)? either way good to see this series getting some love, we need an RE engine sequel.

Me too
Fixed camera tank control games were my jam as a teen. They were the first genre of game type that really felt like "interactive cinema" to me. Something I'd longed for since the days of Cinemaware games. I quite liked Alone in the Dark, but it was Bioforge that made me fall in love. And by the time RE hit PS1, it happened to coincide with my ability to get my hands on all the video nasties I wasn't allowed to see prior, Raimi, Fulco, Romero etc... it was a heavenly time for me as a youngster. The camera work at the beginning of Silent Hill blew my mind, I was so hopeful for where things seemed to be heading... and then that style just died 😢 Fear Effect was one of my treasured in the collection. I never understood why it didn't do better in sales. I didn't like FE2 as much either, much preferred the 1st. Made me happy to see the duck roll dance at the end of this video, I'd forgotten about breakdancing all over the place for far too long at that point in the game 🤣
This cell-shaded look really helped this game age well.
It's like Sierra adventure games had a child with classic Resident Evil. I loved playing this as a kid, even if I didn't get like half of all the innuendos being thrown around lol
At one point I was basically at the point of picking between getting Galerians or Fear Effect. I didn't get Fear Effect, but noted the series. Too bad I have bad memory. Definitely need to check it out eventually still though. Sucks that it is going through rough stuff.
Yea I agree with the first one being a tad bit better. Mainly because of the darker tone and atmosphere. Also the first one had higher stakes as none of the characters had plot armor so you had no idea who was going to go. Glas gets his arm cut off and Deke straight up dies the most brutal death I've seen of a main character and then goes to Hell and becomes a boss. There was ZERO plot armor lol. The 2nd game was a prequel so it boxed itself in with fewer stakes since you know they will all come of the story alive and in one piece. That first playthrough of the original Fear Effect was a very unique experience that honestly few games(even today) have replicated.
Fun fact: the villagers at 11:00 begs in Cantonese for you to kill them. I'm not joking, they sound genuinely in agony in Cantonese
Great review Boulder Punch. Thanks for exploring our game. R.I.P. Stan.
I never played this game. But the animation & art style in the intro hit my nostalgia pretty hard. I feel like I've seen it before as a child
@Boulder Punch, Thank you for covering this series! I too really enjoyed it and have wished for years that we could get a Remake of them new controls. It'd be amazing to get an actual 3rd game with the Chinese mythology brought back 👌
One of my favourite series of all time - bought the first one when I was in uni circa 23 years ago, completed FE 1 and Sedna again last week....this video is a brilliant dive into what makes the games great
I loved the first one. One of my favorite PS1 games.
Oh man, I almost forget that this game exists. Thank you for covering this!
omg ty for this video man !
The first is a classic, the second was ok, but relied to much on fan service and controversy, and we dont talk about the "third" one. Pretty similar situation to the Parasite Eve trilogy.
Fear Effect is one of my favorite games of all-time. I’m happy to see someone is finally paying some attention to it. I actually used to own copies of it specifically to give away to people who were willing to try it.
"There's an Australian on screen. Crank the didgeridoo up to 11!" - the developers
The soundtrack was amazing
Totally forgot about this series! Good shit.
Thank you for the video.
Lol, the rolling around while everyone is dancing bit is something I did as well!
Well, I do remember seeing quite a lot of this game in gaming magazines back in the day, but never got my hands on it. I'm glad you got to cover FE, possibly the best source to check it out aside from playing myself
That macarena dancing was impecable
Great video, I remember a game informer article about Fear Effect Inferno. Apparently there was supposed to be a Deke level where you play as a random goon as to s how how badass he was.
This is a really well made video - I’ve just gotten into the old resident evils and I think this is a really awesome piece of history from around that time!I might check it out after I finish resi 3 - excellent job man 👏

Great video, I'd love to see you analyse the first 4 Alone in the dark games
One of the most obscure games ive ever seen as a kid
i was most impressed by the story. loved how it went from thrilling bank heist to escaping acursed hells
Fear Effect 2 had this geometric puzzle. I remember looking at the screen, saving the game, and walking away. I honestly had no idea how I got past that part.
I remember reading that FE2 was the "most adult game" on PS in a gaming magazine when I was a kid. It said "sexual themes" on the ESRB, and so I was all in.
Love this series and that’s how I stumbled on this video
Oh! The first two games were fun! I didn’t know there were more.
Man I never knew about these games, but now I at least have two new ones to pick up and play through on my half dying PS1. They sound a lot of fun!
16:05 I'm not sure which revision of the game you're playing, but my NTSC copy didn't let me cheese it like that. Just putting this out there in case anyone else wants to get that ending themselves the honest way. I understand people can simply watch the endings online, but there are also folks out there who wish to get it the 'legitimate' way. Thanks for the review/retrospective.
Really loved the Fear Effect games.
I think I remember seeing ads for this game in every single one of the old gaming magazines.

Yup, the second game pretty much was marketed as "this game has half naked lesbians!"
As it turns out, I HAD Fear Effect on PS1 disc. But like with my copies of MediEvil 1&2, I accidentally left them in my old car when I sold it. I did not realize this until like a year later.
One of the most underrated duologies ever made, easily in my top 5 ps1 series and my biggest disappointment when I learned 3/Inferno was nixed.
I had both Fear Effect games back in the day & 410 like.
One of my favorite games and I haven’t played it in 20 years.
I found Fear Effect 2 to be much better than the first. I kind of preferred the story to the first, but the gameplay in the second was a big improvement. The backtracking could get a bit tedious but a lot of flaws the original had were gone. The long loading times being one of them. There was a lot of cheap deaths in the first game that the second didn’t have too. The bosses were much better, as were the puzzles. I had issues with the camera in both. I thought Sedna was complete shit. But I backed the game, so I had a solid investment in it. It seemed buggy as fuck to me when it released, as well as having various other flaws.
20:56 horny 14y old me took way too long to free poor Raine from this hellish device XD
Great video, I love a good dive into rando survival horror series, totally missed this one growing up. I’m gonna go ahead and guess these titles are in the hundreds now.
Man this game series is very underrated because it’s a crime that inferno got cancelled before it was finished especially seeing the trailers and cutscenes back in 2003 especially seeing wee Ming again, Fear effect 2 was a sequel and great prequel to the story but Fear effect Sedna was horrible with the voice acting and gameplay including the story after 19 years since inferno, I know they’re remaking the first game but we still didn’t get any news from it recently despite it being in development for years now, I still hope inferno can be finished one day because I wonder what are the voice actors are doing nowadays, I wish they can make a comic or even a manga about fear effect because I love the cyberpunk supernatural horror action element theme to this series. This series deserved better
Somebody talking about this game, amazing
I loved these! I have to say in the first game there were at least 2 points where getting through was soooo difficult it felt very unfair, both with puzzles and combat. It was frustrating for that reason, but was a good game with a good story nonetheless. And very good looking for a PS1 game
I was just playing this awhile ago!

I'd also recommend checking out: Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn/Chase The Express. Think RE meets an over the top action film from the 1980s/1990s. Maybe, In Cold Blood, too. Think RE meets a point and click adventure game.
Damn, you really slapped be in the bollocks with the nostalgia with this one. Now i'm going to spend hours digging through boxes of old shit to see if I still have my copy of the first game so I can replay it. Hopefully 2 isn't too expensive
A friend of mine had this game on his PS1. Good times 👍
Bro I played that first game when I was super little. It pops into my head every now and again but for the longest time I couldn’t remember it. I stayed up will 1:30 am today doing random keyword searches like “ps1 game3 discs?” Or “ps1 female protagonist”. I CAN FINALLY SLEEP!!!!!!!
Holy crap, I played this game back in the day, it was awesome!! "calm yourself mister, or your fear will take over"
I absolutely love fear effects main menu music
Fear Effect 2 was one of the first games I ever tried buying over the internet, almost succeeded, as it was the Fear Effect 1 discs in the Fear Effect 2 case, heh.
As someone from Hong Kong, I really wish I known about this sooner! I need to track this down now.
Never played the original but I loved FE2 despite it's difficulty in certain sections. One example being starting Penglai Shan with Hana at low health and low ammo. I didn't know that health/ammo carried over from the previous time I played as her (Xi'an). So, as you say, with few chances to recover health, I spent the majority of that level trying to avoid the demons where possible. It's a shame FE3 was never released. I remember being excited after seeing screenshots of the trailer in a magazine. That reminds me I still have few posters of FE 1 & 2 lying around somewhere.
Damn, those games still looks great!
30:22 your welcome boys
My first exposure to fear affect was people praising the graphics and cutscens for the time and I just got the vibe that it was like a spy comedy thriller like mission impossible. I did not expect "resident evil clone"
"eidos now had high quality assurances" [Eidos releases Deus Ex: Invisible War]

quality assurance is usually just a justification to axe projects that are deemed not profitable enough by the publisher, i remember when the same thing happened to C&C: Tiberium
I wish both PS1 games were remastered for both current consoles and pc. Dang shame we didn't get Inferno on PS2. Sedna wasn't good. I was initially excited for the Fear Effect Remake when it was announced a few years ago. But the recent trailer looked very rough asthey changed the gameplay from RE fixed camera and tank controls to a 3rd person cover shooter. Hope we don't got another XIII Remake 2020 situation here. The lack of reactions to gun shots for both the player and enemies looked very bad.

@TheGamingProZone19, They added Syphon Filter 2 this past Tuesday. It, like Syphon Filter 1, has trophies and was a free download if you already own the game from PS3's PSN. It wasn't exclusively tied to Premium Plus like ResidentEvil Director's Cut. As for Fear Effect 1&2, Europe's PS3 PSN sold digital copies for both games. But they were never made available in the US and havent been ported to anything else officially. Maybe they will bring them back in the near future. But right now, their focused on Fear Effect Reinvented which looks rough.

Deke was my favorite I the first Fear Effect. Never skipped a moment to take an adult situation and change the subject.
I never played the second one, but the first one was pretty good. It felt kind of like a point and click computer game with some Resident Evil style movement and shooting. Great characters and scenery. More people should know about this one.
Sheeeeeesh that second game is definitely of it's era. I'd be embarrassed if anyone caught me playing it!
Damn I remember my dad getting me dark rift for my birthday as a kid, Legendary game🔥
I played through the first game on a PS1 not too long ago. The loading times and disc-swapping actually weren't all that bad.
I still have my PS1 discs for Fear Effect in my room. Probably played it 100x. Still use Yim Lau Wong as usernames for MMOs lol
My only memory of this game series was a clip shown on television game review show. They showed some scary cutscene from Double Helix that freaked the fuck out of 10 year old me. For about 20 years I had no idea what the game was, but remembered that one clip that had etched itself on my mind. I tried searching for the game and for a while I was certain it was just a fever dream or something until I came across some videos on youtube.
Oi Boulder you never checked out Prey Mooncrash right? With the right mindset it is completely phenomenal, I hope you cover it someday
This game was way ahead of its time, also I couldn’t get past the first level lol but I was 8 years old.
9:00 Oh no, not use her for random! That was a funny slip.
Fear Effect and Fear Effect: Retro Helix are totally underrated, such a pity they went under before Inferno could be released, I was so excited for that one. Also a pity the only Fear Effect we've gotten since is that Sedna bullshit. I still own my PS1 copies.
Algorithm must have known I loved this series. Hells yeah!
I remember every boy in elementary school loved this game for the lesbian cheesecake. I don’t recall the facial animation looking this good.
How on Earth did you get the FMV backgrounds to look that good? is there a shader/settings combo for Duckstation you're using or is YT's compression somehow smoothing it out?
I wish I could play these games again! I remember the puzzles being super annoying lol but it's a very fun game overall. I believe the second one was a bit more difficult, and both were full of comic relief. 😊😊😊 I wish they could bring it to the ps or nintendo marketplace 😊❤
I played these when they came out. The presentation was amazing. There were tons of PlayStation games that were close to interactive movies, and these were two of the best. Most of them were not so great, even at the time. I am not sure how much I'd enjoy playing them today, but I cannot forget Fear Effect. I remember being a young boy and seeing Hana in that shower scene. Shit. I was just discovering girls at the time.
22:18 And that was when I would have subscribed, if I hadn't already
I loved this game the first on was the best
That original build of Reinvented was one of the very few games I had to look forward to. The new direction kinda bumped it off my list. It's nice to see the franchise getting another instalment, but at the same time and just like Sedna, it's not going to feel like it.
I wish the OG games were remastered and had some options with rebalance, combats and instants-deaths, keys and gun reloads and modern controls as new optional options kinda like Resident evil remake remaster did.
If they are in Greenland I wonder why they don’t use the Kalaallit Spelling and pronounciation. Like here in Greenland Sedna is called Sassuma Arnaa. Also Ijiraq Ee-yeh-raak
I'd totally forgotten about this game. It was probably in the second wave of PS1 games I bought after I finally got one. The thing that caught my interest at the time was the switching of character POV and getting a new ending depending on which character you chose which was novel for me at the time as I still hadn't played a RE game yet.
that "remake" footage was viscerally painful
Big trouble in little China+ resident evil+ aeon flux = Fear effect
Love your work, but you really should consider working a bit on your scripts. You tend to repeat informations you already mentioned 2 or more times. A bit of trimming here and there and everything will flow even better! For example, in the beginning of this video you mention the looping animated backgrounds and the chinese theme of the games twice.
I cant believe i have yet to play this game, dont know why i never bought it, for the time it was unique and was ahead of its time.
