Deadly Premonition is one of the best examples of a game's sum being greater than its parts. A game that came close to cancellation a handful of times during a long, troubled development.
The gameplay of Deadly Premonition is nothing to write home about. But it's the world of Deadly Premonition that's made it such a beloved title. On the surface level, Deadly Premonition takes heavy influence from Twin Peaks, but it's more than a simple clone. Within Deadly Premonition is a story and town that stands on its own merits.
Deadly Premonition has one of the most memorable, realized cast of characters in gaming. Rounding that out is one of the most lovable gaming protagonists in recent memory. Deadly Premonition is silly, and at points nonsensical, but it's earnest and full of love that few games can match with its setting.
Deadly Premonition has a reputation for being one of the best bad games, or the game equivalent of The Room. Something that's never sat right with me.
The Room is a case of a snake eating its own tail. Where its bizarre and nonsensical nature is brilliant in all the wrong ways. There's a method to the madness of Deadly Premonition. There was a lot of love and care put into it by its director, SWERY65, and the development team. There's too much going on here to think it's a happy accident the way Deadly Premonition comes together.
And I think that reputation hindered Deadly Premonition 2. A sequel that at many points feels like it didn't understand why the original was so beloved.
I give them props for taking the risk of leaving the setting of the original Deadly Premonition. That said, the town of Le Carre lacks compelling characters with a few exceptions. Most come across as one-note compared to the original.
Don't get me wrong, there are moments of brilliance in Deadly Premonition 2. But the game sure makes you work for it. The gameplay of Deadly Premonition was nothing to write home about, but Deadly Premonition 2 at points is insufferable. It's full of fetch quests and padding that even a developer at Ubisoft would think is overkill. As a result, Deadly Premonition 2 loses the stellar pacing of the original. The narrative at points grinds to a halt, then rushes to its conclusion.
Deadly Premonition 2 is a title that needed more time in the kitchen. Sure, you can say that about most games, but Deadly Premonition 2 is an especially notable example.
With that, let's take a look, at the good, the bad, and the york of the Deadly Premonition series. Isn't that right Zach?

When I think of Deadly Premonition, I think “All heart, no brain” if you’re just trying to have fun it’s one of the best experiences out there, I don’t know if you’d enjoy the game if you didn’t know what you were getting into, but it still leaves one hell of an impression
i like how there is a swarm of flies around you if you haven showered for a while, looks hilarious in cutscenes, talking about immersion
My favorite thing about the game is York's pop culture monolouges you can hear while driving.
Playing the first Deadly Premonition, I knew it had to be a game I completed. . After beating it, even after playing thru the jank & some tedious sections I ended up really enjoying this weird quirky game. The characters and story are so damn interesting you can't turn away 😂 Francis York Morgan is awesome.
This game has more character in one act than most of the AAA gaming industry has had in the past half a decade. Thank you for this video, it will provide me with a couple of hours of joy 👍

I mean I’m not sure it makes it fun or even compared to its other surrealist games ( killer7, Alan Wake or Neir come to mind ). Yeah it has charm but compared to a Suda game it’s gameplay is way more awful
Scariest words from the 1st Deadly Premonition At times we must purge things from this world because they should not exist. Imma get my coffee now.
If anything is "The Room" of video games IMO it is Indigo Prophecy.

I'd challenge anyone to explain what goes on during that game; it's that confusing that I might as well ask people to explain what Love or Joy or Fun is. I've heard "It's a game about police solving a crime" and "A guy about super powers" and "A cult I don't really know" and all are correct ironically. Although I do like the game I also dislike the idea that you have very little control over the actual story; everything leads to the same ending with the same people. The writing is alright, just the overall story is hard to follow because of the over-reaching concepts presented in a snowballing effect; something that does help you connect to *one* of the main characters but really should've been juxtaposed by the police slowly unraveling the case. TL:DR? *Despite all my rage, Written and Directed by David Cage.*
I love how the game opens. It took me until the show itself was mentioned to realize York was talking about the Tom and Jerry cartoon, so I thought he was discussing a gay couple he knew who do BDSM and have a reputation for it. That was not a reading of Tom and Jerry I was expecting to hear today
the part at the end of deadly premonition 2 where it feels like york's talking directly to the player made me cry when i played it but also made me burst into tears just hearing it again........ i love york so much, i'm so glad that he and zach can talk again because that made me SO upset that they had to be forced apart in 1
Honestly as someone with DID this is much more what good alters are like than i can express.
I love everytime a channel covers this game, Thank you MR. Boulder
The sound effects of this game are so funny. The stock sound effects are one thing, but sometimes you'll recognize a sound effect somewhere just to realize you know it from Deadly Premonition. I've seen a Temu ad use the same sound as when you kill an enemy in this game.
I unironically LOVE the first game. It's not "so bad it's good", it's so good, DESPITE being also bad.
The driving in DP1 alone is something that needs to be experienced to be believed. Considering how much the game wants you to go around a mostly empty gigantic map to certain points of interest for sidequests, you'd think the driving wouldn't be complete absolute ass. It's like you're driving on the surface of the moon at 0 gravity but at the same time all the cars feel like slow giant trucks with stiff vile controls.
@EddieSpaghetti69

You neglected a few key things; The driving doesn't respect controller tilts, if you try to drive like Forza you'll learn that there isn't much control over your wheels. The other drivers are drunk drivers on rails whom can be unpredictable. There is night driving with monsters. *The turning is so bad.*
I was in a Gamestop, a decade ago now, when I realized that I had a Buy One Get One coupon. I glanced around the room, saw a pretty spooky cover for a game I'd never heard of, and just grabbed it. It was Deadly Premonition! Going in completely blind with my College Roomates watching was...amazing.
Zach, what a great video this will be!
I had always heard about this game over the years but until I watched the review from PointlessTV I never knew how amazingly entertaining and atmospheric it was for it's time! Gah I cannot get enough of York and the characters in general of this game, such a shame how two turned out. Could have had so much potential but I'm really glad to see another one of my favorite KZreadrs covering this awesome game as well! 😁
What sold me on the first game was how you can do all these side events and activities but you never have to do them. On top of that, people will be in certain places at certain times. It made it feel like a real place where people live.
This just lights my day up, like a Christmas tree.
I fat-fingered typing in his name in the search bar and it was "Bjoulderpunch", now my head canon is he's from Iceland and talks about video games like Bjork talked about her TV in that one video.

The cool thing when I played the game, is every time he said Zach it felt so much more uncanny. Considering that’s my name lol.
The 1st game is one of my best experience ever in my entire life, not just gaming. The sequel/prequel did not hit that spot at all, but I still don't mind having played it. But it certaibnly didn't change my life. I wish it did, but alas.

This review is clear as a crisp spring morning
Appreciated the reference to Best Friends Play! Matt and Pat’s LP of the first game was my first exposure to it, lol.
For me the opening scene in car is so hilarious. Dude is smoking. Looking at internet. Talking on the phone and just as I was wondering this is so over the top I wonder if he will crash he crashes the car. This seems highly unintendedly funny. Like they where just giving player exposition and plot kicks in with shadowy figure. This and other elements makes this a game that is so bad its good and only one ever that has scratched my room size itch. I can see the arguments of this being somewhat more intentional. I am open to other game suggestions that are more so bad they are good but I doubt I get many.
This video is my fresh cup of coffee this morning.

I finished this game in october after getting halfway through back when it came out on pc. I tried DP2 but man, just didnt captivate me the same way. The magic in the first game just had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time even dealing with the fact that the game crashed often, the car made a constant absolutely HORRIBLE noise that NEVER went away and nearly drowned out all other audio including voices and did I mention the game crashed often? One of my most favorite gaming experiences I think I'll ever have. Absolutely amazing.
This game is the sole reason I discovered Twin Peaks.
Over 2 hours of Deadly Premonition? Let's fing gooooooooo! Wooo!
As a huge David Lynch fan, I knew I would love this game, but I wasn't expecting it to be much more than a homage. I absolutely LOVE this game☕
Hungan is most likely a reference to a certain Loa (a spirit/being) of the Voodoo, Baron Samehdi.
I would like to point out that you can become OP for the combat very quickly. After the hospital you can get access to an unlimited machine gun. Which will help you until you get the VERY missable unlimited Magnum, and later the unlimited RPG launcher. Even then if you keep the guitar you get from the rocker guy as it will 1-2 hit kill any enemy (even the wall creature) and doesn't take damage. I tend to give it back to him later in the game.
OH what a fantastic surprise to see early in the morning! Can't wait to watch this
God I love the deadly premonition series sweary is literally one of my favorite devs
Zach? yes..this is the coffee we needed right now .
This video is a wonderful Christmas present. Cheers!
No matter how good or bad this game is perceived to be, I'll always be thankful for that whistling tune.
The Good Life also makes me think swery got lucky with deadly premonition. Also both DP2 and Good Life both go heavy on meta commentary on tedious fetch quests and grinding, tho in the case of Good Life (never played DP2) that doesnt make amy of it any less annoying, and the game will run this joke to the ground.
This is one that didn't cross my radar at the time. I've heard of it since but never looked into it, it's been really interesting. I follow several content creators who do gaming retrospectives, each of you has your own style, yours is very relaxed and easy to listen to.
The car breaks screeching sound is still the best in gaming
The tire screech sound effect is used in Duke Nukem 3D.
Hold on, was Billy Kametz a part of the voice cast in DP2?
I have 1 & 2 on switch I haven’t finished 2 but I completed everything for one I love how quirky the whole game was, the glitches, the monologues, the dialogue This game holds a special place in my heart. ❤️
F K in the coffee. I knew I could count on it. It never fails. 😁
I saw this first with TotallyPointless TV, I forgot the game existed frankly. I played it so long ago. I'm happy it's getting attention again - probably because of the utter mess that is part 2. XD
Glad you're doing this, couldn't get mine to work :P
Merry Christmas Zach, and to Boulder Punch too. Hope you watch Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes over the break.
7:31 this entire scene is a meme
Zach looks like John Carpenter when he is older
I adore these games
I absolutely love SWERY as a director. I think he is phenomenal when he has limitations and people around him. All of his work during his Access Games period were absolutely great, especially D4. That was his magnum opus, in my opinion, that unfortunately had to be abandoned once he left AG. I think part of why he had so much success was because he had a team of professionals around him who kept him grounded and understood what he was trying to achieve. With White Owls he had so much creative control all of his terrible ideas are able to exist without much pushback. Sure he had The Missing which many would consider the best game he has ever made and there is merit to that. But my LORD is DP2 and TGL absolutely horrible and it’s hard to believe the same director was integral to the game’s final release. I could understand DP2 not being as strong as the first as DP was lightning in a bottle but he also didn’t have much input in the creative process as he was working on Good Life. Which makes it all the more puzzling The Good Life turned out to be so terrible. Especially when the kickstarter demo was great! I’m hoping his collaboration with Suda is a return to form. If not, I don’t see the point in playing more SWERY games which breaks my heart.
tl;dr of the whole game: that fear you had as a kid accidentally eating an apple or watermelon seed and it'll grow a tree in your belly
oo the joy of see this pop up in my feed :D

I have to mention that watching you controlling York’s car is giving me anxiety.
I follow the director/creator on Twitter. Originally, I wanted to ask him to revive D4: Dreams Don't Die, which I did. But he didn't. So, I decided to respect the fact that he probably won't revive the story.

I like DP2 a lot, but I'll be the first to say that it has padding and pacing issues. I think it gets written off by a lot of people as a cheap sequel, but there's moments of brilliance, like you said. I think we also really need to sing the praises of Jeff Kramer, the VA for York and Zach. The two characters have almost the same voice, but they have different tones. It's subtle, but it shows the care that went into the games.
I've got to try this game out
I loved Deadly Premonition, but to me George was enough, I didn't need Kaysen being the ultimate villain.
I've been meaning to play DP for a while. Is the switch port any good? It's the version I own.
Sometimes I wonder if half of the stuff in this game was me having a fever dream. Then I replay it and no, it's just that odd of a game

DP2 need more a mod/remake that fixes the gameplay than a sequel.
