I agree to 93%, the internet does give a huge window into different views, and that is good. The 7% problem, is that the internet also gives a huge window into weird things, disinformation, conspiracy theories, lies, etc... so all of the info is not "objective" or good. For example the atrocities you mention, could be a biased narrow look, and not the whole context (and I am not saying atrocities did not happen!).

What is the problem with Trump? You don’t go to church because Trump? That is not a good attitude, I am a Chinese Christian, We have Brother and Sisters who support ccp and Brother and Sisters who don’t support ccp at same underground church in China , The love is the cure, The pride in the heart is from flesh and lead by Devil. We should learned from those Palestinian Christians and Messianic Jews whom from same church and love each other , they might have different opinion on something, but it’s not a problem in the body of Christ, we are one in Jesus. Bible taught us that we must go to church, Church isn’t a building, It’s Christians get together Worship God and study Bible together,we learn to love people we don’t really like at church , Church is the first place to practice the command of God ,and learn to let our flesh go when Holy Spirit speak inside I hope Christians in America read their Bible with a sincere attitude and fear the Lord

In the US people are likely afraid to admit to a caller, even if its said to be in confidence, that they aren't religious. One of the surprising statistics that came from this research is that up to 10% of Catholics said they were Catholics, and obviously Christian but weirdly said they didn't believe in a god. Those same people also said they weren't atheists. (yeah weird right?) All this tells us is that respondents have no clue what the word atheist means... and what a really low bar belief in a god is to classify ones self as religious in the first place. People who said they were catholic but didn't believe there was a god were not counted as 'nones'.

I am a "None", i have been for the last 35 years. I spent much of my late teens to my early 30's looking for a religious "home" and walked away from all when the focus became.... you will get more consideration in your requests or needs once you are a member and paying your tithe to the church. -i got tired of the politics to become a part of their hierarchy. I got tired of donating my time, as a non-member, to fill their needs and not getting reciprocity for mine. The last straw was when I was working as a Free Lance interpreter, my sole source of income at the tie, and the church I was earning most of my income from began to push me to join, in that way I could Donate my services and they would no longer have to pay me.... - I don't need to go to a building to pray to my higher power, I don't need someone to intercede on my behalf, I don't need dozens of people standing next to me to know that my beliefs are valid, and most of all I don't need to be part of the politics I found in organized religion that , despite Christ's teachings, separates the haves from the have-nots in a very un-christ-like manner.

Hi Tosca, Consider Jesus's illustration. "Go in through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are finding it." (Matthew 7:13,14) What do you suppose those words mean? If you thought it sounds like a pathway to God, you're right. Jesus here used an illustration of two roads, one cramped and one broad, to describe ONE genuine religion versus all the rest. Did you notice Jesus said the cramped road leads "off into life, and few are finding it?" So it sounds like effort is required to find it. But how do you know which is true since there are thousands of religions? As you pointed out in your experience, religion has disappointed you. Well, here are four brief things to ponder. 1. Many churches support efforts that are counter to first-century Christianity. Jesus told Pilate, "My Kingdom is no part of this world. If my Kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my Kingdom is not from this source." (John 18:36) What did Jesus mean? Essentially he said that his followers would remain neutral of earthy politics. For most of the first century CE, Christians stayed neutral of earthy politics. The nations routinely persecuted those first-century Christians because they wouldn't get involved in politics and refused military service. Ask yourself, can any religion that claims to be Christian be genuine followers of Christ if they and their members are actively involved in political matters? 2. Easter is a so-called Christian holiday. However, did you know this holiday originates from a pagan festival? It has NO roots in Christianity or Judaism since much of Christianity stems from Judaism. Ask yourself, can a religion that embraces this God-dishonoring pagan practice be that genuine "cramped road" religion? You can learn more about this topic by visiting jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/bible-about-easter 3. Psalm 83:18 reads. "May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Highest over all the earth." The true religion would actively make known God's name as JEHOVAH (or YAHWEH in Hebrew) instead of hiding his beautiful name behind impersonal titles like GOD and The LORD. You can learn more about this topic by visiting jw.org/en/library/books/good-news-from-god/who-is-god/ 4. At 2 Corinthians 2:17, the apostle Paul makes clear, "For we are not peddlers of the word of God as many men are." And Jesus said, "You received free, give free." (Matthew 10:8) True religion doesn't commercialize or profit from God's Word. Further, Christianity is not under the Jewish system of tithing. It is not required. 2 Corinthians 2:7 reads, "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." The authentic religion operates entirely by voluntary donation of whatever a person can give, and if they cannot provide anything, that's fine too. I welcome any questions you have. 🙂 You can learn more about Jesus illustration from the Bible by visiting jw.org/en/library/books/good-news-from-god/recognize-true-worshippers/

I am sorry for the experiences people had in some churches. I am glad to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses. From my personal experience of 50 years it has been tremendously positive and constantly improving. We take the Bible seriously and study it together deeply. We are non-political, have no tithing or collection plates and are ethnically diverse. There is no paid staff or Pastor. Everyone is a volunteer. We are patterned after first century Christianity in every way and so have a loving, spiritually qualified body of elders. (1 Timothy 3:1-9) Congregations are full and growing even in this pandemic. (Though out of love of neighbor most are still currently meeting on Zoom) Congregations are from about 100 -150 members so everyone can be known as individuals. Anyone can have a free, personal Bible study where all of their questions are addressed and answered one on one. The atmosphere is very friendly and loving. There are no gimmicks, sale of merchandise, light shows, loud bands or other distractions. Just group Bible study, interesting Bible talks, group singing and prayer. Jesus is the leader we look to. Congregations in 239 lands are united and teach the same things. We look to the Creator of humans and follow his inspired Word regarding morality. Our website JW.org is in 1051 languages and has reasonable, Biblical answers to your questions. You can find a local congregation or request a personal Bible study. It is good and beneficial to meet together for mutual encouragement and fellowship! (Romans 1:11-12) I am longing to see you, that I may impart some spiritual gift to you for you to be made firm; 12 or, rather, that we may have an interchange of encouragement by one another’s faith, both yours and mine. (Hebrews 10:24-25) Let us consider one another so as to incite to love and fine works, 25 not forsaking our meeting together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you see the day drawing near.

  • @PjotrII

@@sub-zero710 It is sadly true to some point, but I would like to add some broader aspects. "They should have done it when it could have made a difference"... sounds like this happened once and not anymore... I see it differently... At least MY church is trying to take responsibility NOW, as it COULD hurt someone being targeted NOW. We cannot change the past, nor can we guarantee it will never happen again, but we as a church can change the system so that it works BETTER - NOW if something happened. This could be taken as some kind of "excuse" but I want to point out that it is not it. Back in time, not only in the church, but the whole society was different, the values were different, and how people acted was different. It has not even passed 100 years since people were treated with ELECRTIC SHOCKS for mental illnesses in my country. People today, discuss things more openly, so society and thinking has changed. Another thing we have learned through the crisis is that the abuses have more often happened in strict groups (sry my bad english!). In my church, the main cases have happened in very fundamentalist/conservative strict religious groups, with a (from my perspective) distorted narrow sexual view. Also in the catholic church the main thing there again seemed to be priests, why? priests cannot marry - and have to try to live in a UNNATURAL sexual situation. I am NO expert on the matter, but discussions we have had is, if you oppress a natural sexuality, it will actually backfire. So a normal, positive sexual approach is better for the psyche, than trying to fight what is normal.

But religion is not just about belief, they have their own philosophy and teachings in morals which can also be considered but its not as direct/explicit. If a person were to take an openminded approach they could study the mistakes people have made and learn from them to avoid making those same mistakes. How studious that person is the more wise they would be. Which is why religion can be so appealing to some because it gives -I use this term loosely because some parts of religion are valid in there teachings- false sense of truth and understanding that provides this mental comfort.

If by your question you mean what do I view as good or ethical then its unbiased judgement of morals, by definition unbiased morals are ethics so a pursuit in unbiased judgement should ideally be fair and ethical. Further expanding on the topic: I researched various biases to see the sign's of distorted thinking and used that to find a fairly unbiased take on ethics which is: You cant value a social construct or object over the lives or wellbeings of other living things including yourself. The thing is, some countries may percieve ethics differently and what they think is unbiased is biased if they are unaware of the bias, its why courtrooms n such exist.

Christianity as a whole, outside the West has been and is growing rapidly, Asia, Africa, Latin America and even among Muslims, it’s only declining in the West and in America, evangelicals are actually holding steady at about 25%, it’s the traditional, mainline Protestant churches that go along with whatever the culture says that are declining. True Christianity does not destroy cultures, just bastardized versions of it like fundamentalism or colonialism, true Christianity of course often represents values and beliefs at odds with the world and with other established world religions (and visa-verse). Tolerance is valuing a person even if we don’t agree with them or hold the same beliefs or values as they do, not necessarily embracing a universal belief system where every truth claim is equal. Jesus was the most humble being who ever walked the earth and so should those who claim to follow him.

Well there is a great degree of correlation between the rise of global communications and social media and the decrease in religion worldwide. But that does not mean that one caused the other. Having said that I'd be fairly sure Americans were gobsmacked to find people in Australia, Britain and other countries that they considered to be Judeo-Christian were pretty much not religious at all any more and the huge European cathedrals were empty, or museums, and just for show. It was in fact a joke here when Notre Dame cathedral burnt and one of the priests thanked God that nobody was inside the church at the time... that was funny... thanking his god that his church was empty... lol Thats pretty true since its only tourists visited it anyway. I'm constantly told I'm religious by folks with the weirdest ideas possible and most of those are American. Its sorta like listening to children telling you what they got off Santa. I don't mind the naive ones... but the loud ones look as if they are demanding you adopt their beliefs... the louder they are the greater their ignorance, the lower their personal intellect and the poorer their education seems. I usually tell those gobshites where to get off! And you can do that so well to such people they aren't even aware they are being insulted.

Religion is nothing more than a psychological blanket against the fear of the unknown. We created religion to make sense of our reality and the meaning of life because 2000 years ago we had very limited knowledge of anything really and zero information. As humans our intelligence can sometimes can work against us because of the fact we have self awareness we cannot stomach the thought of our lives being meaningless or not being significant. That is why we are the only animal that creates religions and belief systems. We are the only ones with the self awareness to fool ourselves into believing we are something more than simply nature. And that is how the powerful are able to take advantage of it. With the abundance of information, study and factual evidence to support the contrary in recent years, we have still yet to see any substantial evidence of any existence of anything according to religion and no closer to proof of any of it than we were 1000 years ago. When humans can unanimously agree that we are all nature and no one knows anything for sure then we can begin to have peace among each other and more respect for the earth. It doesn’t belong to us we belong to it. It was here before us and will be here long after we are gone along with all religions, Gods and all else we created

Religion is a perspective or a guideline as to how to look at life. It’s a way of processing and experiencing events. It’s as you put, a “psychological blanket”. There isn’t any reason that people should believe in any god, let alone that said god is in any way morally “good”, according to modern morality or most moralities. We live in a horrible world, so for people to say,”god will be there for me,” is just a desperate attempt to self-soothe. Think about it. In a world where kids suffer with cancer for no reason other than to die months or years later, why would anyone believe that the same “god” they think let that slide will help them? There’s absolutely no reason why “god” should be a conclusion. Our world has just dragged the idea around for centuries because people are desperate and miserable. People want to think the same god that lets people starve is gonna go out of the way for them. The psychological effects of religion are very interesting. Religion acts like a parasite. There’s no reasoning. Religion entirely relies on irrational thinking, as well as denying facts and being illogical. It really is so mind-controlling. I enjoyed reading your comment very much and i’m glad someone is in a similar mindset.

  • @ooduckoo

    @ooduckoo

    2 жыл бұрын

And people do just want a “purpose”. I think everyone needs to get off their high horse and realize we aren’t special. We are nature, just like every other species on this planet. We don’t have some objective life purpose, but we want to find the illusion of one. That’s what careers are for. They’re something to be caught up in. So is religion. People have a desire for purpose, yet fail to apply this to themselves. People need to start thinking “maybe my religion isn’t real. Maybe it just has to do with the fact that my mind is very receptive to it.” People need to step away from it and I doubt we will have world peace until everyone recognizes our equal insignificant value.

Between the years of 2010 and 2020 the number of those that consider themselves to be atheist or agnostic doubled in size. Don't believe that find it out for yourself on google. I can't speak for the rest of the country but in my town which has several churches you are limited to those that look at how fancy your Sunday clothes are, those that see how big your donations are, and those that do not believe in debating the Bible because they think they are the only ones that can define the Bible. As far as synagogues go I have no clue because I've never even lived in a city large enough to see a synagogue or maybe they're just not as prevalent in America as they are say in Europe. Never been to a Mosque either for the same reason stated above. Now I only mentioned the town that I live in and have lived in for the last 10 years but there are good and caring churches out there in America and then there are those in fact one that comes to mind that was in Jacksonville Florida. My girlfriend and I were both homeless at the time and we saw some younger people in a Catholic Church through the Windows and she simply went up to the door and knocked on it and asked if she could use the restroom. They responded that there were some woods behind the church and closed the door. There are those that attend many churches that are very fine people and then there are those that think they are holier than thou and that also think they are better than everyone else. Just like on continents and countries and Islands because at the end of the day we're all part of the human race good, bad or indifferent. Shout out to Pastor Bob whom I shall always consider an angel on Earth. Lastly as I speak into my phone even Google is getting in on the act by not wanting to capitalize the P in pastor. The monologue sermon format, by its very structure, fails to fully challenge people and allows them to get their religious "fix" without any meaningful contribution. Meanwhile, the man in the pew has a satisfaction provided by the very process of sitting through the sermon no matter what is said from the pulpit and may explain why many people continue to attend church even when they are not listening to the pastor’s message. They may be experiencing an unconscious sense of atoning for their misdeeds simply by going through the motions of sitting quietly and appearing to listen. This leaves a man free to continue living as before, unchallenged, uncommitted, and unchanged, while feeling whole and clean or forgiven, structuring his life so as to keep God out - or at a distance.

I stopped believing after I objectively studied the protestant bible and its MANY versions. It is anything but perfect and if one engages in textual criticism, it can easily be deduced that bible is riddled with one contradiction after the other. All one has to do is simply let it be its own interpreter. The problem is most people NEVER go beyond church services, what the preacher states or a daily devotional. Most adherents to a religion NEVER investigate its veracity, rather accept it all via faith, which is the most HORRIBLE way to detect truth.

The Bible does not have contradictions when did Isreal Go back to Egypt? When Did Jesus not die on the cross? These are very important topics and characteristics of the Bible that do not contradict.

Churches need to start doing things for their members. Churches are supposed to give to each man according to his needs but give nothing to anyone but preachers, staff, and foreign preachers and staff, and other charities.

Salaries and money given to preachers is now classified as charitable? Really? Wouldn't you need an actual purpose for such monies to make it charitable? Given the definition of the word 'charity' that is... otherwise there is no difference between the pope and a mafia boss.

Baloney, you don't know if there is a god or not, let alone if he doesn't eat or sleep or drink. "God is 20 foot tall and loves beer and watermelon" That statement carries about as much weight as your statement does.
