Ex-Mormon Mean Girl

Today, I unpack the Mormon-run "Ward Radio" hate episode about little old me! I discuss my reservations about snark content and then proceed to dive into a snarky episode of my own. But hey, I do it much better than they do. And I guess I've got to live up to my new "mean girl" title somehow.

The way you approached this is beyond gracious. It's hilarious you took the higher road when the Mormon podcast clearly didn't.

For me - it's about whether you are punching UP or punching DOWN. Punching down is called bullying. Calling out a massive, wealthy and powerful organization is punching up. Fair game, far as I'm concerned.

Damn, he definitely needs to be called out. Sounds like when they run out of apologetics, they just insult.

Religion is not needed as a foundation for characteristics like kindness, charity, compassion. However, religion can and does create an Us vs Them environment which can then lead to hate and divisiveness. My most hateful relatives are also the most religious. It’s sad.

As an ex Christian, I’ve listened to every single episode of Girlscamp, but I’ve never felt compelled to leave a comment until now. The grace in which you handled this is so admirable. What frustrated me the most was the criticism that you’re ungrateful. Just because the church has had some positive impact on your life, which you’ve acknowledged in MANY episodes, doesn’t mean that you should be barred from ever criticizing it. Institutions and people can be both helpful AND harmful at once, and I don’t get how someone can’t wrap their head around that nuance.

Put that quote “spaghetti straps and fun swig flavors” on at shirt and “monetize” on it. 😂

That was an INSANE critique-like yeah let’s acknowledge privilege, but criticize those trying to deconstruct the system that creates it if they benefited from it in any way? 😂

It’s absolutely wild of your former classmate to publicly bring up something you shared in a writing workshop! I’m sorry she did that to you-I studied nonfiction writing in grad school and it’s so violating to think of someone publicly discussing (and misrepresenting!) the content of work shared with the presumption of privacy and basic respect.

I agree with taking the high road but there’s also a time to fight back especially when low blows have been delivered.

How exactly are you suppose to not make purchases and shop at shops likely owned by Mormons when you live in Utah which is largely Mormon?

Ward radio is embarrassing the church.

I think you’re apologizing for way too much. People who don’t like what you are doing will continue to pick at every little thing you do. It wouldn’t matter what gender or race you were, they’d find a reason to blast you just because they are clueless jerks. Keep doing your thing.

This is so well put. Insanely impressive how you were able to be so graceful and calm through this episode. It’s insane the things people think are okay to say about others they don’t even know🤦‍♀️

Them making that video says a lot about them (not good things lol). You handled this with immense grace; far more than they deserve.

I may not love everything about your content, but I love absolutely nothing about ward radio content. The irony of 3 mormon men calling you out for your privilege is all anybody needs to know about those clowns. I mean we all have blind spots, but sheesh... how embarrassing for them. I think your response was restrained and you showed them how to be better.

Great vid. You gave Ward radio wayyyy more credit than deserved. They have zero self awareness, and everything they say is just a major projection, and the more you know about projection, the more insane it is to watch and listen to these people! They are literally bringing down the church just on their own because of how ridiculous they are. Love sound bowls too by the way. 😉
