"It feels kind of culty" is the exact reason I left the church ten years ago (that and many, many others). Growing up Mormon is hard, and leaving is even harder. Ex-Mormon here. Starting out with hard liquor as your first alcoholic drink is SUCH a horrible idea. It's better to ease into it with beer, wine, or sweet cocktails. My first alcoholic drink was Shock Top, which was a perfect choice. As a side note, alcoholism amongst Ex Mormons is unfortunately SUPER common. When we're prohibited from using something our whole lives, it's not surprising that we overcompensate later in life, and that can lead to addiction problems. Sex and porn addiction tends to be pretty common too, for the same reason. Just remember, use moderation and common sense when transitioning from high demand religion.

I have a horrible relationship with my parents and no longer believe in God due to the abuse and sexual assault I went through from people of power in the church. The church is so toxic. I could go on and on about how horribly they treat sexual assault victims, BIPOC, women, and the LGBTQ.

I come from a similar background. I was 20 when i lost my virginity and my dad could barely speak to me for years. Both my parents response was deeply emotionally abusive and scarring. My dad thought I had lost my value as a human being because I wasnt a virgin anymore. My mom sat me down and called me a slut over and over in my face, even though I had been dating the guy for an entire year and was 20 years old not living at home..... Not only that but being indoctrinated by these beliefs gives you a complete loss of identity once you start doing things you were supposed to never ever do that 'define' your value as a person. Your identity is formed by all the things you dont do in those communities, but life happens and once you start entering adulthood its like you have no idea who you are anymore, because youve done the things you defined yourself as never had done. If that makes sense. My heart goes out to that girl. I hope she reads this and knows shes not alone.

The fact that her dad was distraught over her having had sex... that's fucked up. I hate that men can feel ownership over our body's, our decisions, to that extent. My dad is that same. It's just fucking gross honestly that a dad would want to keep this "pure" image of their daughter like he owns their fucking sexuality. Ewew I just watched a movie called Pure which was really satisfying because it hits on this issue.

The whole father daughter purity thing is blatant sexism. Why don't we see mothers worry about their sons losing virginity? Patriarchy.

I had the same experience about 7 months ago. I was a muslim my whole life, never really believed in it but changing it never seemed possible. I was so scared of my family. I told my mom that I am not a muslim but ended up just saying that i won't wear the hijab anymore to my father. Both took the news really hard. My dad still doesn't know why. My mom told me if i do drugs, drinks or sex she would cut all relations with me. I neve lie normally. I hate it but I cannot say that I have a boyfriend and we do have sex, I drink sometimes too. I just wanted to say that, never do this to your kids. They'll do what they want anyway, at least know it. Be there for them because if you don't, you'll probably lose them. My mom always cries asking me why we never talk. Why we are so distant. Because she made me think that I cannot talk to her. And I don't.

I think you should tell her too" And my mom is a really smart woman, she would never believe that i "just" wasn't going to wear the hijab anymore. As soon as I told her that I won't, she asked me "You don't believe in Allah anymore?" So I couldn't and didn't want to hide. Get out there and experience life, go fail, so you can be successful and be able to tell your kids/grandkids how many trial and errors it took u to be successful & one day you can inspire those that look up to you who ever they may be. Y’all are both young adults now y’all know right from wrong. I heavily support both of you, seek your happiness & you’ll find your purpose along the way. At no point did I mention anything about alcohol in my comment. As an ex-mormon, I understand the traumas that come with that and they are very very real. It takes a hell of a lot to leave, especially if its all that you know and drinking is definitely not reason alone, everything else, however is. I am just here trying to support this girl, because I understand. I also know that once you make this decision you are completely seperated and Isolated from your whole life ( family, friends) and so everyone making the decision deserves all the extra support they need. Once left, a new journey starts where you have to find out who you are, understand what happiness really is and build a new and healthier relationship with yourself and your spirituality and that is what I am rooting for.

Let them choose a really palatable, delicious fruity cocktail, based on their flavor - maybe a pina colada, a fuzzy navel, or a mojito 3. A nice glass of wine, red or white, based on their preference 4. END with a shot (not start 😆), if something with a nice flavor - maybe a really high end, smooth bourbon, or a tequila or mezcal
