Microsoft was being cheap and didn't want to have to pay health insurance for full time long term employees so they hired short term contractors and just did that for year after year for however many years (7?) and this is what we got. Honestly we're lucky that Infinite turned out even half as decent as it did given all this internal self sabotaging that Microsoft and 343 did.

"We don't need to make a great game- it's Halo." That has the same energy as we hired people who hate halo to make halo. What happened to the love that went into Halo? Do you remember learning how Bungie almost killed themselves trying to make Halo 2 the best game ever? In the end Halo 2 had it's issues because of the time restraints, and a lot got cut, but god damn was it still an amazing game. Now I look at Halo 4, 5, Infinite, and the TV show, and I am sure a lot of people worked hard on those games and show... but I don't see the same level of love or soul put into those games. All I see now is, "We don't need to make a great game- it's Halo." Thanks 343 for killing something I loved.

It's basically saying "we don't need to make this good because it's already popular" Which is really dumb because the reason it's so popular is the care that was put into it. But yeah sure bank on popularity to make mediocre sales instead of putting in a lot of effort and making an insane amount of sales. It's like these big corporations forget how they got big in the first place. Any buisness should pride itself on customer satisfaction if it wants to be around for any considerable amount of time.

343 needs two things: - COMPETENT Management that understands that putting out a shit product = NO MONEY. The fact that they tried to cut costs and corners everywhere is telling. - A dev team that will firmly stand on "when it's done" or when the game is in a playable, enjoyable state. Infinite had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and is genuinely fun in multiplayer, but boy oh boy did it take WAY too long to get there. - Management that actually cares about the health of the franchise enough to realize that subpar product will assure that they lose their jobs. Companies around the industry are starting to wise up to the fact that gamers won't spend money on crap product. I hope that Halo 7 really knocks it out of the park, otherwise... yeah, Halo needs to change hands.

Maintaining a quality talent pool and experience is important in pretty much every single company, but it's so often sacrificed first for cost savings. People who know the software well and how it works can make it do new things far better than someone who didn't even help build it and now has to make changes and additions. Building a new engine for years with contractors who only stay 6 months is idiotic, nobody knows shit and it turns into cludgy spaghetti code ham fisted together. It's why hyper specialized crews for stuff like maintenance exist, a very specific but infrequent process like rebuilding a machine can go significantly faster and be done better by a traveling crew who only ever rebuild that machine. Instead of a week of downtime and problems after to iron out, it's a days downtime and it works perfectly after.

Just hearing about them trying to make Halo a hero shoot just infuriates me because I know exactly why they were trying to do that. They wanted the Overwatch, Apex, and Valorant players and they thought that if they made halo like those games then they would get more players from these communities, and completely ignoring the community they already have. They tried to do it with Halo 4 with the Cod community so its safe to say they would have tried it again. By trying to attract other players from other communities they ignore the one that was built up for all these years. Obviously halo does need to adapt or else it might become repetitive, but if their plan or changes activly shatter the foundation of what halo is then they might as well just end halo now and make a new ip for them to use to try and chase after popular game types years after the hype has already fallen for them.

This is really the short answer that has a million other points attached to it: Halo USED to be a trendsetter. Now it just follows trends. The end. Games wanted to kill Halo by trying to emulate it in some or one facet but never capturing the entirety of, “the dance.” OG Bungie would’ve flipped the bird at MS had they told them, “Make it into a hero shooter.” The very idea of them even trying to push for it would’ve been laughed out of existence.

I've been a Halo fan since CE but after the last few years I couldn't even bring myself the buy Halo Infinite. I actually have a friend that worked on Infinite as one of these contractors. This is a very common practice in the entertainment industry, small studios get brought in for a few months to work on one piece of the production and at the end of the process they hand it off to the next. Now this new team has to decipher what the old team did before they can even start themselves. While some 3rd party teams are able to stay together throughout several projects and develop a strong sense of comradery most break up after a contract is complete and they have to go off to a whole new project.

Jones also sided with Activision against Bungie to remove content out of destiny before launch, and his work on the reboot of marathon is hated by playtesters because Jason Jones is out of touch. Marty O'Donnell basically doesn't know what he's doing anymore, he's made comments about Halo that are actually untrue to make weird points. I think that the worst thing about it for me was that they had the best setup for a campaign that 343 has ever had. They had a halo ring, they barely showed us any of that ring. They were on zeta halo which had great backstory especially concerning the flood. They had a compelling followup to the covenant in the banished. And as the game launched, most fan favorite characters were nowhere to be seen so they could be introduced in expansions that also added in new areas and old weapons that were missing. On the flipside, we had a multiplayer with the most restrictive customization that we've had in a halo game since the original xbox. It was missing key game modes/features and was free to play supported by microtransactions. They only supported one aspect of the game, and in my opinion if they had put the effort into supporting the campaign alongside the multiplayer we would be talking about a very different situation right now.

Play helldivers 2 to end the rants and force 343 to fix the game if that ever happens by speaking with your wallet not complaining just to continue to support a ruined franchise that like many others will continue to further run the IP to the ground like the tv series as long as people still super it financially low key in private but complain in public. As it stands right now, I don't see how the next Halo game could POSSIBLY improve upon what we come to expect from a 343i / Microsoft product. You can use a different engine, employ new staff, go in a new direction, and it STILL won't stick the landing. I see a fundamental culture issue at the core of how this studio and franchise has been managed, and you just can't fix that without having a central figure to make sure specific tenants that make Halo special are followed without straying into modern gaming pitfalls. Halo used to be the trend setter now its just following trends. I'm personally not hyped for the next Halo because the people in charge still seem to have an identity crisis over what Halo is at its core, and you can't make a good Halo game if your focus is not centered on the original formula.

Rather than voting with their time & wallets, gamers seem to just instantly forget about all the shady crap 343i have done to the Halo franchise. 343i could break into your house and you'd forgive them as long as they said "sorry, we messed up" and gave you freebies. *We knew this though…from the top down…leadership was completely incompetent and had no idea how to manage a company. There was complete incompetence across the board. They got comfortable in their positions with an A+ Title in Halo and relied on its popularity to carry their negligence. Microsoft and 343 choosing to go cheap…and not investing into quality employees and give them appropriate wages/benefits. They ended up costing themselves hundreds of millions more dollars in delays because of it. It’s just the epitome of greed and incompetence that’s taking place across the gaming industry. The amount of layoffs and wasteful spending just so the people at the top and reap all the profits is disgusting. One of the reasons that BUNGIE was so successful in creating Halo 1 through Reach was that it was not only a company…it was a COMMUNITY. They had inside jokes that they included with the fans, they loved and butted heads like a family all in the name of creating the best game possible. It seems like Microsoft/343 has shifted gears and has actually removed a lot of the leadership and has invested into more developers. Everybody at 343 NOW seems to be much more energized and optimistic moving forward compared to years in the past. Halo 7 truly needs to be a home run in order to gain the trust back from the fanbase.*

Halo Infinite made enough and did enough until it became irrelevant for the people handling the money. Same with the Halo TV show, it is absolute slop but people are eating it up anyway in heaps. It’s established enough with enough loyal spenders that it doesn’t matter if the game is great, sure it could become extremely successful if done well, but why take the risk when you can spend less to make good money and have micros? It is too established so now it has no chance.

No vidmaster challenges. 6. Promises broken like no split screen. 7. Not a complete game at launch, release it now, fix it later. 8. FOMO. 9. Microtransactions. 10. TV series is garbage. Halo IP is a franchise driven to the gorund. It's just bad. It was hijacked by buisness companies looking for a short term profit, and nothing long term.

Honestly I think things would be better if 343 (under new management) split from Microsoft. There are people at 343 who care about Halo, but management and executives are everything when it comes to ruining these games. I guess I could compare it to being in the military … you don’t make your own decisions, you follow orders. You go where they tell you, and do what they tell you, or you’re canned. And the contractor stuff, the layoffs, etc… this is a big part of why I feel the video game development industry needs to start unionizing

"We don't need to make a great game- it's Halo." The death knell of every once-great franchise. They think they're too big to fail and in their hubris bring about the very failure that they thought was once but a mere impossibility. Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

The campaign was ok. Its big issue was the open world concept. It just doesn't work in halo. I also hated how they pretty much downgraded the Spartans abilities to just having a grapple. Think of all of the abilities that you had in halo 5, and say what you will, but halo 5 did have the absolute best spartans!

Think your having a rose coloured glasses moment. Minimum content, battle modes and a tiny map pool, deinterlacing and partying issues, a campaign that ended halfway through and most of the story stuffed in audio logs? Like physically the game ran well and they had the mechanics down pat out of the gates but there wasn’t any meat behind it. What infinite has today is probably close to what it should have launched with just on the multiplayer side. The campaign portion sadly was never filled out.

They really subcontracted the halo project, bruh mircrosoft really doesn't know how to make a video game . The reason why the OG halo games were good was because it was made by a bunch of nerds who all shared the same goal. The making of the master chief was like theyre beacon of hope. Too sad that they sold they're baby . You can't force an idea to a person , that's why 343 sucks

The thing is 343 tried hard on Halo 5 Multiplayer experience, which was successful for the piece of the community that wanted to move forward in a new way. But then the other side of the quarter people hated Halo 5 mostly because of the campaign. So, 343 basically gave people what they wanted in a since. By having Halo 3 and Halo Reach and taking the worst of both to create a baby version of the two. Which turned out horrible for in every way imaginable. But anyways, all I know is that people won't be coming back to Halo until 343 stops with this main focus on competitive tactical warfare and not trying to get ahead of the shooter genre. Halo has so much potential, but it will never get there if the gameplay experience isn't fun and for everyone. For example, making matchmaking based on how you play is a horrible idea instead of just rewarding players for simply winning the game. If players want to be rewarded for their gameplay performance, simply give them credits like in Reach. To purchase the cosmetics items throughout the entire Halo Universe.
