Evzones Changing of the Guard (2)

Changing of the guard by the Evzones, or Presidential Guard, an elite unit of the Greek army that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in front of the Hellenic Parliament building (the Old Royal Palace). The unit is known for its uniform, which has evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts who fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment. The elaborate ritual is always watched by a crowd of tourists.

Via Ted Guarino As one person put it, anyone calling these Evzones Clowns, should remember the evzone battalions are probably one of the worlds best Mountain fighting battalion units. These Evzone units kicked the Italians back into Albania during WWII until Benito needed to call in his buddy the Wall paper hanger, and the Ottoman Turks back into Asia.

Those needing guidance and an understanding of "Evzones", please reference the topic "Evzones". Hopefully this will provide a "basic" explanation, historical background and insight on the matter of Evzones. Please note: "MANY" of the 1821 Greek Revolutionaries (including Kolokotronis) were dressed in a fustanella. The Evzones uniform is based on the uniform worn by the revolutionaries of the 1800's. As funny as their outfits may look, you don't fuck with those guys. The Greeks' resistance in WW2 was greater than any of those that was conquered by Germany.

I would say that the Polish resistance was greater. No disrespect to the Greeks who gave their lives resisting against Germany though. The Polish had suffered a bit more because they were seen as inhuman seeing they were a slavic people, therefore were treated way worse than the Greeks. The only thing the Germans had against the Greeks was that they chose to be with the allies. They could have been allies with Germany just like Italy. Hitler was rather interested in Greece and despite going against the Greek army, found them to be heroic in defending Greece.

@@zachbocchino5501 The reason Germany got screwed in Russia is because they had to divert forces to invade Greece because Mussolini failed. As a result, the Germans wasted time moving into Russia and were trapped by the Russian winter.

@@zachbocchino5501 Your arguments are irrelevant to each other. Managing to accomplish a hard resistant is one thing and being hated by the opponent is another. Suffering loses shows inability and it is the opposite of a successful resistance. The Greeks after pushing back the Italians and Albanian helpers. , then had to fight at the same time with Germans, Italians, Bulgarians and Albanians.

what the evzones are wearing is if you look at it closely, is almost medieval. Evzones are wearing hose which was common for men in Rennaisance and Medieval times, and the fustanella is just an extension of the tunic. Just have a look at the way men dressed in Tudor England or rennaisance Italy, Its almost the same. That indicates that the clothing of the Evzones has roots in Medieval Europe (Byzantium).

    1. The fustanella is a wraparound garment with 400 pleats to signify the 400 years of Ottoman occupation. 2. Byzantium has nothing to do with Europe. It was originally the capital of the Holy Roman Empire which became Greek after Christianity became widespread. 3. Do some basic research.

@@johnbackos5192 The Roman Empire was never called the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire was a central European, German-Roman country founded in 962 and had pretty much nothing to do with the ancient Romans. I have no idea what you mean by "Byzantium has nothing to do with Europe" and it's simply incorrect. Greek was always a major language in both the western and eastern side of the empire. The Greek peninsula and Anatolia were Greek before the Roman Empire was even a thing and Greek was the lingua franca of the entire eastern mediterranean area.
