Evolution of TAZ the TASMANIAN DEVIL - 67 Years Explained | CARTOON EVOLUTION

CARTOON EVOLUTION #23 - TAZ the Tasmanian devil
I take a look at the history and evolution of Taz the Tasmanian Devil, the tiny Toon with a gargantuan appetite. Despite being introduced in the mid-1950s, as a foil for Bugs Bunny, and only appearing in five classic shorts, Taz went on to become one of the Looney Tunes most beloved and most merchandised characters ever.
I discuss how Taz has evolved over time, alongside other Looney characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam and Sylvester the Cat, and also spotlight how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time. Here's my look at the Tasmanian Devil through the years!

Little fun fact: Taz-Mania was the reason why Crash Bandicoot wasn't named "Willie the Wombat", because the show included a character of the same name. So, to avoid confusion with an already existing cartoon character, Naughty Dog first decided to come up with different names for the same species (either Wes, Wezzy or Wuzzle the Wombat) and then with a made-up animal (Ozzy the Ottsel, which later became Daxter's species in the Jak & Daxter series). But in the end, they came up with a bandicoot (another lesser known Australian animal), who liked to literally "crash" into the wooden crates lying around the stages.
Taz was at his peak in the 90s when Jim Cummings voiced him in various commercials and TV shows as well as one of the key factors of the character's success. Not to mention, it's one of his most iconic roles.

I love how Taz somehow he never truly loses in the end of his classic shorts. He's just a beast who either eats all he wants or finds love. He never cops it as bad as Fudd or Sam. Funny enough, if you look up actual Tasmanian Devils & the history of rabbits in Australia, you'll find that the roles are reversed! It's the bunnys that are rampaging & causing all sorts of destruction (creating sinkholes & destroying the top soil), while Tassie devils are shy creatures that mind their own business. Although they still have the same table manners as Taz.

He actually loses in almost all his classic shorts (except the first one). Devil May Hare: Neutral ending Bedevilled Rabbit: He loses Ducking the Devil: He loses (one of the rare times Daffy wins in the end) Bill of Hare: He loses Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare: Both he and Bugs lose in the end

@@caseysmith544 Yes, I know. I am bonafide Aussie. The destruction caused by invasive species like rabbits is taught in schools. Native predators like Tassie devils, quolls, birds of prey, goannas & dingoes are actually do control some of invasive species. So rabbits do end up on Taz's menu.

I do love his way of design and appearance in “The Looney Tunes Show” when he’s actually acting as a normal wild animal, until tamed by Bugs, which later one he still acts like a dog but his normal taz attitude, even his own episode with tweety and Sylvester, funny how his debut episode has him transported like the raptors in Jurassic park!

Taz is a great example of a character growing more beloved thanks to latter-day appearances. Love him!
I remember watching Taz-Mania after school as a kid. That show rocked the sitcom angle while refreshing the Looney Tunes original formula and warming up use of breaking the 4th wall. I still miss Taz's siblings, Molly and Jake, as well as Dog the Turtle.
It cool that Taz and Marvin only appeared for 5 episodes but they became so popular and everyone’s favorites.

I recall there being a videogame where you played as Taz and had to wreck Marvin's plans. The game itself was eh, but I really like that concept. I'd love to see that concept realized. Maybe some Martian bureaucrat forces Marvin to Noah's ark a breeding pair of every animal on Earth if he wants to blow it up as a starting concept. Then a few Alien spoofs where an extra terrestrial is dealing with an earthling in a horror movie type set up. Sounds like a lot of fun.

They're the first two Looney Tunes reps to be in Multiversus after Bugs (With Taz having recently joined the roster and Marvin being leaked as a fighter) if that tells you anything about their popularity.

Taz and Marvin are my Dad's favourites. When he started talking about them, it prompted me to start looking more into the characters. I was aware of Taz a bit, but knew nothing about Marvin. After searching for some classic appearances and watching a couple of films, I'm now ashamed that I didn't know enough about these guys. Out of the two, Marvin is probably my favourite.
Who knew that Robert McKimson came up with the Tasmanian Devil through a Crossword puzzle when trying to create a new recurring antagonist and an animal that WB hadn't utilized in their shorts and even if McKimson didn't saw what the animal looked like and made the design of Taz as a caricature creature we always associate the animal to the Looney Tunes character. Taz just like Marvin the Martian really had an interesting history, and as you said it yourself in the video, despite appearing in 5 shorts it was the late 1980's and especially the 1990's that help made him popular again thus making him a part of the Looney Tunes roster. On top of that, his popularity help made the Tasmanian Devil animal more well-known to everyone living outside of Australia and raised awareness on saving the animal from becoming extinct.🌪🌪 Thanks for the documentary Dave and looking forward to Taz's voice evolution, regarding my favorite iteration I enjoyed the classic shorts released during the 1950's and his appearances during the 1990's (e.g. Taz-Mania, Space Jam, etc..).

12:24 there’s the “Green Taz Pillow” I was talking about
Taz has one of the best cartoon designs, period! A hulking hairball with a giant mouth and gangly arms and legs is just amusing to me. I think my favorite appearances of his were some of the classic shorts, "Taz-Mania," the "Beauty and the Beast" parody in "Animaniacs," playing the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come/Future, and the Christmas episode of "Looney Tunes Cartoons." As for his portrayal in "The Looney Tunes Show," even though I'm not a fan of Taz acting like a pet dog, I will admit that it's interesting how he looks a bit more like his real life counterpart when walking on all fours. Plus, I loved how his introduction in that show referenced the opening of "Jurassic Park."

Bugs is my number one favorite looney tune, but Taz is up there with Bugs!
It’s hard for me to hear someone other than Jim Cummings play Taz. He’s just IT for me.
Taz-Mania was the character at his best. Giving him a child-like depth and giving him more roles than just the predator, often times being the fall guy. I'm a big fan of the genre bending LT shows, with Duck Dodgers and Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries rounding the three series out. Honestly, I can't even choose a favorite between the three. I always loved the fact he was in so few of the original shorts but had such a popularity push in the 80's and 90's. Even had an Atari 2600 game all the way back in 1982 or so, so you know that popularity was a long time coming. Oh, and fun fact. Jim Cummings actually played a Tasmania Devil for Disney before he was cast as WB's Taz. It was briefly in the Rescue Rangers episode, "A Wolf in Cheap Clothing," and his voice was only lower pitched and slightly less manic from what he'd go on to do for the LT character.
I clicked so fast because Its all about that FANTASTIC beast everyone loves from Tazmania! Funny how he got to parody The Beast in Animaniacs! ❤
Let's gooo Taz is here.

Thank you. I love it 😂 Pretty sure you’re also the first one to ever point it out.
I love his song in The Looney Tunes Show, "Tasmanian Meltdown".
My favorite Taz appearance will always be that Looney Christmas Tales segment. Taz as Santa is just classic Looney Tunes ridiculousness. And I can't help but suspect it was this appearance that started to kickstart him into becoming an unlikely Looney Tunes favorite (despite his small number of shorts).
As far as design goes, I really like the Looney Toon Show angle. Something about that more traditional Tasmanian Devil look is very eye catching.
The chicken brained Elmer Fudd. Interesting choice of words, since Elmer could be considered as a later version of Egghead.
Taz is my favorite character next to Marvin the Martian. I can’t wait for space jam 2 to come out
My dad told me to respect the classic cartoons. So I love the classic Taz design and the Space Jam design

Awesome video, Dave. Worth the wait!
Don't forget. Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island was actually the first to change Taz's fur color from light brown to dark brown and his baggy eyes from purple to black. But you are right when the design got slightly updated starting with Taz-Mania.
With the very-recent-as-of-posting addition of ol' Taz into MultiVersus' Alpha testing, I had to check him out here a bit. Never knew he was so popular over so many years, and I used to throw around a cheap football shaped like him (with protruding ears and nose, and his spin taking up the 'bottom' half) as a kid, hah. That old thing has survived plenty over the years, and in good condition, much like him.
Finally ive been waiting for this for months

Back then that was how the studio knew what character the audience liked and what they didn't.
Tax's initial character design is his best.
My favorite is when bugs flys in the female Taz and they get married
For a guy who apparently didn't know what a Tasmanian Devil looked like, McKimson did a damned good job making Taz look like one. All that's missing is a white stripe on the chest.
Me: taz was here Taz: bunny Bunny: what's up doc
Bugs is my favorite Looney Toon, but Taz is up there with Bugs in my list of favorite Looney Toons.
I remember the Taz in Tazmania game for the Sega! I could never beat the underground minecart level when I was little.
Taz is cool and awesome. this made my day.
He certainly spun a long distance since his original 5 shorts. But that aside, Taz-Mania is still a favorite.

I have seen every single Looney tunes show every episode wise except for loonatics unleashed which I just now found out about so thanks for telling me about loonatics unleashed.
One tiny error, Dr Devil and Mr Hare came out in 1964, not 1967 since Bugs was retired that year and never was used by the other studios doing the shorts at that time
Hey can you make a Cartoon Evolution of Garfield the Cat or Droopy Dog after your upcoming Rugrats Cartoon Evolution
Hopefully we get to see another Evolution video of my 2nd personal favorite Looney Tunes character along with my 1st personal favorite Taz, the red hairy monster with white shoes named Gossamer.
I was not expecting to see something I hadn't seen before...I had no idea there was a "chaos devil" fighting Wonder Woman, which I am surprised by given the darker more serious tone Wonder Woman comics were typically going for.
I always loved Taz. He's fairly flexible as a character and can fill a lot of roles, as proven in this video. My man went from being basically a hungry caveman to being a sitcom protagonist, a sitcom pet, and a superhero. I appreciate our hungry Devil's acting chops.

There’s a little problem in the history of the Termite Terrace animation divisions. Robert McKimson didn’t inherit the division from Clampett, he got it from Frank Tashlin, when he left. Clampett was replaced by Arthur Davis.
