One particular thing that I remember is playing on snes, where the strong punch was on L. I would hold the controller in a weird position to press L with the right hand index finger. The problem is that holding it that way you could only use punch, so I would go like hadoken and shoryuken spamming all the game

Growing up as a young teen in the early 90s was probably a blessing to be honest. Arcade games, grunge music. I hate that my kids wont experience what it was like going into a arcade room and seeing new games like Xmen, The simpsons, mortal kombat and the list can go on forever. If I ever won the lottery i would love to open up a arcade room with at least 100 of the best arcade games ever.

I remember the smell of some places. Sometimes the older guys would be on SF2, MK or World heroes 2 and there was no room for a 13 year old. Next door was an even more old school place with slot machines and only 2 others SF 2 and MK. The place smelt like stagnant cigar smoke, but hey no one else new they anything other than slots. Saving up lunch money (things were slightly different in the UK, but not by much) and heading down to the local arcade to spend it all. great times.

The problem was banging your hands on those damn pads and blowing your elbow out SMH
SF2 played a big part in stunting my career growth while I served in the United States Navy. The USS Saratoga (CV-60) was an aircraft carrier that displaced 78,000 tons (about 171,000 kg). Each of its anchors weighed 30 tons. Even the anchor chains were massive, each link weighing 350 pounds. It measured 252 feet across its flight deck, and nearly a quarter mile in length. The floating fortress was home to more than 5000 sailors and Marines, almost a hundred various aircraft, and two arcade cabinets (SF2 being one of them) that contributed to more write-ups than smoking and unauthorized absences (off the ship while docked) combined. With only two video games supporting a crew that large, crowds were inevitable, and competing against the game's AI nearly nonexistent. For a single quarter, one could challenge the victor of the previous match, and continue fighting subsequent challengers until defeated. I was good enough playing Ryu or Ken to go undefeated (quite literally) for hours, until my immediate supervisor finally figured out why I was often late to my watch rotations. Ironically, the popularity of the games prevented this discovery far longer than it would have if I had been goofing off anywhere else, because I was always hidden by the crowd of other sailors much taller than me that were gathered around the game, and any attempts to break into that crowd other than to secure your place as a challenger by putting your quarter on the machine was akin to breaking up a lion feeding.

They should release a special edition collection where you could play all the Street Fighter games leading up to Street Fighter 6.
I love how the game evolved in increments and sometimes big bold moves depending on the industry trends. No matter what the direction has been, they seemed to learn and apply something from the previous gens and find a good balance, while staying relevant. Pure product development.

Man this brings back memories
SF3 is by far the most elegant of the series. The originals (SFII series) were constrained by their limitations. The Alpha series made large improvements to game play and dynamics, but SF3 series took those improvements to the highest levels possible. Those three series, leaving aside the mashups with Marvel, represent the generation of players who grew up with the game. They played the original as kids, the Alpha series as teens, and the SF3 series as seasoned adult players. This is why for me, SF3 represents the pinnacle of the genre, but also a reason why Street Fighter needed a reboot. The game was no longer friendly to the novice player. The versions that came after (SF IV and V) hearken back to the original series in style and Alpha in game dynamics.

I was 5 years old when Street Fighter 2 came out in 1991 and I still play that exact cartridge on the same Super NES I had from back then. A great game and all the street fighters through the years have been great but I’m a fan of the OG style graphics. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike is probably the best one in my opinion.
I grew up with SF2, MK1-2, King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, World Heroes, Fatal Fury, Tekken2... Now too much to learn for me, all those characters and their combos. (getting old) But I am very happy this genre never died, got stronger in market.
SF Alpha & EX were game changers.
The 2-D art style IS Street Fighter. The other versions look lame IMO Ultra Street Fighter II looks great, retained the art style and animations, but sharpened.

The thumbnail to this video is crazy wrong. That image of ryu on the left was from super streetfighter 2 which was released in 93 in japan. I know I'm nitpicking but come on. I'm a fan.
such special memories, when games were fun, competitive and uncomplicated
It was interesting to watch the evolution. I remember playing SF1 back in 1989-ish. I think the years that pushed the series forward on a purely visual sense would be 87 (obv), 91 (obv), 95, I think 96's SF:alpha2 was the pinnacle of graphical style for the series followed by SFIII:2nd Impact. I think those 2 titles were graphically where the creators wanted to get to leading up to, and couldn't overcome going forward.
