Exploring Brilliance and Evolution - The Shining Series Review
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
The "Shining" series of video games, developed primarily by Sega and known for its diverse range of genres within the role-playing game (RPG) spectrum, has etched a notable legacy in the gaming world since its inception. Spanning multiple consoles and generations, the series offers a fascinating journey through various gameplay styles, storytelling approaches, and graphical enhancements.
Evolution of Gameplay and Genres:
One of the most remarkable aspects of the "Shining" series is its adaptability to different RPG subgenres. From traditional turn-based combat to tactical strategy and action RPGs, the series has demonstrated its versatility. This diversity ensures that each entry brings a fresh perspective, appealing to a broad spectrum of RPG enthusiasts.
The strategic turn-based combat of titles like "Shining Force" showcases the series' tactical prowess, with players orchestrating battles on grid-based maps. On the other hand, action RPGs like "Shining Soul" provide a faster-paced experience with real-time combat mechanics, catering to players who prefer a more dynamic approach. This willingness to experiment with gameplay mechanics is both a strength and a hallmark of the series.
Storytelling and World-Building:
The narrative quality across the "Shining" series is a mixed bag. While some installments deliver immersive, emotionally charged tales that draw players into their worlds, others tend to prioritize gameplay mechanics over storytelling. "Shining Force II" and "Shining Tears" exemplify instances where the storytelling excels, offering engaging characters, intricate plotlines, and memorable moments.
Visual and Audio Presentation:
The series' graphical evolution mirrors the advancements in gaming technology over the years. Early titles had a distinct pixel-art charm that has aged gracefully. With time, the transition to 3D visuals showcased the developers' commitment to modernizing the series, though this transformation was met with mixed reception among fans.
Legacy and Reception:
The "Shining" series has amassed a dedicated fanbase over its decades-long existence. Some entries are considered classics within their respective genres, while others are regarded as missteps. The series' influence on RPG gaming cannot be denied, and it continues to inspire new titles and developers seeking to experiment with gameplay mechanics and storytelling approaches.
Conclusion:
The "Shining" series embodies the spirit of evolution within the RPG genre. With a range of gameplay styles, narrative tones, and graphical advancements, it has delivered both memorable classics and slightly underwhelming entries. Its commitment to diversity, innovation, and experimentation makes it a noteworthy series for RPG enthusiasts. If you're a fan of RPGs and appreciate a series that evolves with the times while staying true to its roots, exploring the world of "Shining" games is a journey well worth taking.

Sonic Software Planning became Camelot Software Planning. They developed the GBA RPG Series Golden Sun or Mario Golf RPG and Mario Tennis. Their development and recent years has slowed down though. (Only 2 games on switch). That's the reason for the drop in quality of the Shining Games, the main developer is no longer working on it and also the classic games are no longer in the memories of the gaming audience. Sega thinks they have more success with action rpgs and the Otaku market. I think they are wrong though, classic SRPGs still sell if down right, which can be seen by Fire Emblems recent successes. Sega is missing out bringing a SF3 or SthA port or sequel.

It really saddens me that so many great Rpg franchises with turn based combat and/or tactical combat become real time action games over time. I hear a lot of people say that the genres have become outdated, which isn't a possibility. Genres can't become outdated, but peoples tastes can change and I have heard many people say this is due to the instant gratification people say they prefer these days. Shining force, final fantasy & phantasy star as of now are nothing what they once were. I understand that things need to evolve over time as not become stale, but completely changing the gameplay, genre and appeal that what made itself so beloved in the first place baffles me beyond belief.

Tell that to the followers of Fire Emblem, they sure do enjoy the game still. EA said the same thing about single player games with good story being obsolete. Then they made That Jedi game and was one of their best sellers. With the state of gaming right now, I don't think any of these companies know what gamers actually want.

It was very fun, but I was sad to see that they don't make SF games in the tactical RPG style anymore. It's crazy to me-with how great Nintendo has done with the Fire Emblem series, you'd think these big companies would at least try to tap into that market with their own similar games, but FE remains without any major competitors. Incredible how one game (Awakening) just exploded in popularity and elevated a series that normally would've been extremely niche. Still... I'd love to see more effort from other companies.

Strangely enough, Landstalker is a part of the Shining Universe... Kayla, the lady chasing you, is the the herbs dealer from Shining in the Darkness while her two minions are monsters from the underground. I beg to differ that the downfall of the Shining series was to wander into Hack and Slash or ARPG. I think the main problem was that Shining series lost their special identity and universe. Let's say that Sega management of their IP during the downfall of the Saturn is one of the factor.

I see that many people miss the old Shining Force titles as much as I do. SF 2 was the favorite game of my childhood. That being said, most tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics didn't really appeal to me because they don't have the world exploration that SF does. So I decided to share with you a list of games, which I think SF fans might enjoy, though not all of them are tactical RPGs. - King's Bounty series. This is a game from Russian developers, but it combines big world exploration and tactical battles. Also the game has a very nice atmosphere like in fairy tales, which resembles SF too. The soundtrack is also great. The best entries in the series are The Legend, Crossworlds, and Dark Side. - Fire Emblem series. This series is the first one that comes to mind when we talk about where the developers of SF drew inspiration for combat mechanics from. While it doesn't have a large world to explore, the latest entries (Echoes, Three Houses, Engage) have small locations that you can explore, interact with NPCs, and even do quests. - Dragon Quest series. If Fire Emblem can be called the “father” of SF, then the DQ series is its “mother”. One of the key SF developers worked on DQ games earlier in the 80's, so the influence is very clear. It's a traditional JRPG (without tactics), but the moment you run it, you immediately get a sense of the same atmosphere as in Shining Force 1-2. Story, characters, dialogues, music - everything here is reminiscent of SF! For those who are not familiar with the series, I would recommend starting with the last entry - DQ 11. On the one hand, it has beautiful modern graphics, but on the other hand, it stays true to its roots. - Golden Sun & GS The Lost Age. This is a series of also traditional JRPGs without tactics, but developed by Camelot - i.e. the same company that previously developed SF. And the developers themselves positioned it as a «spiritual successor of SF». Also, many reviewers included GS games in the list of the best RPGs of all time (see, for example, IGN top 100 RPGs list). - Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky FC & SC. It's also a traditional JRPG, but you can move your characters around the field, so tactics are important here, especially in the later parts of the game. The most important thing is the atmosphere and the story, fans of retro JRPGs should be very pleased! I also enjoyed «Trails from Zero» and «Trails to Azure», but they have a more modern setting, hence they have less in common with SF. As for «Trails of Cold Steel» saga, I found it very long, tedious and self-repeating, so I wouldn't recommend starting with it. - Mario + Rabbids series. Despite the rather childish style, the tactical gameplay in the game is quite deep, reminiscent of XCOM, and exploring the world is interesting as there are many secrets hidden in it. And lastly here are a few more tactical RPGs that feature world exploration: - Guid Saga Vanished Worlds. An upcoming indie game that combines world exploration and tactical battles similar to Divinity Original Sin with the visual style of a JRPG. Looks very promising. - Wandering Sword. Chinese tactical JRPG about martial arts in HD-2D style similar to Octopath Traveler. Has a large world to explore. - Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk. Tactical RPG from a French indie studio in which your squad of 8 characters explores dungeons. The game has a cartoony style and a lot of humor, and in this regard it is also somewhat similar to SF. - Arc the Lad 2. A Japanese tactical JRPG from the PS1 era. Also combines tactics with world exploration.

Shining Force II is my favorite RPG ever made, It blends the complexity of an RPG with the simplicity of chess, bringing cute anime and classic strategy together. X-com did the same thing around the same time but removed the cutesy anime and replaced it with Mature comic-book style artwork, replaced magic & blacksmith weapons with Psionic powers & sci-fi weaponry, and made the game strategy warfare. Mario & rabbids is the closest thing we'll have in the modern day for tactical RPGs, but Shining Force II is the best. I still replay it over & over once a year with new characters & taking different promotion paths, which there are so many that most players will never play with the exact same combinations.

Then you get Jaha (my favorite cute axe guy) Kiwi (i once thought he was a turtle throwing his shell at the enemy but turned out he was a fire breathing dragon??) Slade (was always referencing him because he showed first in the intro) Peter (sucks you can't control it at first) Then some characters i forgot A mage in brown suit (ivan i think?) A knight girl (may?) And a guy one An archer a male and a female A centaur archer? I forgot many of them, but the fun of advancing them to class, knowing that my MC has another class advance after him being a hero or some sort. And others turned badass like chester flying pegasus style or jaha being a badass with bigger axe :D

The archers were Elric and Janet (I had to look those two up here sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/shining-force-ii/). Peter becomes absolutely OP later. I loved how you could evolve every character to a new class at level 20 and you had a choice to make with regards to their new class. Picking a new one meant completely changing their stats, weapons used, sprite and abilities. It was so satisfying levelling little tort to level 20 and he transforms into a flying fire breathing monster. Or turning Slade, the mobile but weak thief, into a freaking ninja.

Like why even bother making these weird games that do not connect to the story of 1 and 2. The thing that also made in my opinion shing force 1 so good was how music connected whith the emotion of the story. Since art was done so well I really felt like I was there on battle field as commander MAX. I am actually thinking of recreating 1 as an MMO. This is such a crime, seeing such a unique series with a diverse and likeable world and cast of characters devolve into a safe and uninspired JRPG that does nothing new or interesting. Also, the series had so much potential for a fighting game, with TONS of awesome characters they could have pulled from, and all the game has are humans, humans, humans and, oh look, ONE anthro! And it's a really generic and uncanny looking anthro, too.

  • @Jeremyb2023

They had massive success with Shining Force games on the Genesis. I don't know why they ever turned away from making the Strategy RPGS. Not only that, but it seems like the games lost character and became increasingly generic. It seems like many of the JRPGS became increasingly feminine and lost any real appeal outside of Japan. Most people really don't want to see these cutesy female heroes that are barely clothed and overly feminine men that look like they belong in a KPOP boy band. And then they wonder why these newer games don't sell. Looking at this video, it seems like there were three generations of Shining Games. The first one from the Genesis up through the Saturn which all look pretty good. The Saturn wasn't the most successful console and that probably had something to do with it. Then there is the GBA and PS2 Generation where they cranked out lots of games. It seems like they were losing their way in this generation but were still pretty appealing. They mostly abandoned the SRPG formula. Then we come to the point where they seem to have completely lost their way with the arcade fighting games and lower quality generic looking games from the PSP and PS3 generation onward. They need to get back to their roots!

1 through 3 are the best in the series in my opinion. They are great, I only wish the rest of the series didn't abandoned that formula. There is also Shining Force CD and of course a couple of more games in the same vain of those games.

*sigh. Things went downhill when the Shining franchise shifted from strategy RPG to action RPG...fans love the lore, story and gameplay of the older games and just getting the "Shining" title does not mean it will turn out great...I hope they did a remake of the Shining Force strategy games really. I think it is about time really...

tbh, idm all Shining Tony Taka series cuz I like the dude's drawing, and it's from Shining series instead of actual Shining Force, so I can't say much. HOWEVER, BOTH SHINING SOULS ROCK! but man, SF Feather really make me scream "Look how they massacred my boy..." cuz it doesn't look anything near the series, at all. At least EXA and NEO look close enough (but still too much anime-vibe in it). I really hope SEGA do smth about Shining Force series during their redemption arc (Sonic Mania, Streets of Rage 4, Yakuza series, PSO2 localization and its expansion, etc.)

Man i miss the gameplay of SF1 and 2. The only thing I can say is nice about the new ones is that Tony Taka art style(Old style was still nice though). If they would go back to their roots for gameplay and keep the modern art style I would be happy. Hell even a remake of the old games with the Tony art style would probably make bank and give old and new players something to enjoy.

Look at Capcom...they took that art from BoF 1 and 2 and thought "lets make it even more beautiful"...and they did it with 3 and 4. The 5 one wasn't that bad...just the game itself is not anywhere near the level of the 2 previous ones.

The hint's in the title. The fans of the series love the "Force" games, that's when the series really felt it's best. When they abandoned the tactical gameplay for hack and slash and starting telling cookie cutter anime trope filled stories, it went from a hidden classic fantasy masterpiece series to something pretty generic wearing the "Shining" name. The ambition was really there in the early days, and while this video didn't show them, Shining Force 3 was so big it was broken up into 3 separate games covering the stories and points of view of the 3 protagonists, starting out showing a Republic army's point of view, then an Empire's army's POV over the same time frame, with the 3rd being a mercenary army tracking down the puppet masters behind the scenes prolonging the war.
