He's the ORIGINAL Captain Marvel, but DC comics sued Fawcett Comics in the 1950's for "copying" Superman (really because Cap was OUTSELLING Superman). When Fawcett went under, the name was up for grabs and Marvel pulled a shady stunt in the 1960's to take the name for their own multiple versions of the character.

for y'all confuse why he's called Captain Marvel, it's because it is his superhero name! DC bought the SHAZAM comics from Faucett and then after many years Marvel trademarked the name Captain Marvel for their Kree hero that's why the title is changed to SHAZAM!

Fawcett comics first created Shazam aka Captain Marvel, and DC bought from them. So therefore Billy Batson is the REAL and original Captain Marvel. Billy Batson in original comics started at age 12. Here in the 2019 movie, he’s 14 to 15

Well captain marvel is captain marvel. Shazam is actually the name of the wizard that gives billy his powers. This captain marvel predates marvel's captain marvel by 25+ years. Marvel trademarked the name when they made their own captain marvel so DC started using Shazam when they bought the character from fawcett comics. They still call him captain marvel in the comics and stuff, just changed the title if I recall correctly. Idk about this new movie.

Let Me Explain : First, The old Shazam was made by Marvel that's when DC was complaining about it. So Marvel decided to give it to DC. Stan Lee had an idea about making a Marvel Leader , that's when female Captain Marvel was born. So DC knew Marvel made Captain Marvel so DC decided to call him Shazam. That's the story I think

DC has retconned his name to being Shazam as of the New 52 reboot in 2011. There is also a parallel Earth, Thunderworld (a.k.a. Earth-5) where the character still exists as Captain Marvel, but he's now Shazam in the main DCU.

Shoulda showed the 1941 Captain Marvel throwing people off rooftops and shooting them with machine guns. Totally badass scenes.
