Evolution of Laguna Seca in Gran Turismo (1999 - 2022 / GT2 - GT7)

Gran Turismo 7 has been released and it not only brings back several of the iconic original tracks from GT1 but it also features some real world race tracks that have been part of the franchise for over 15 years. One of these tracks is Laguna Seca. Here you can see a fast lap on Laguna Seca with the Dodge Viper GTS-R in every major GT game that included the track, showing the evolution of the track and the car throughout the history of the franchise.

Laguna Seca has been included in every major Gran Turismo game since GT2. It is one of only 3 tracks that appeared in 7 of the 8 major GT games, along with Trial Mountain and Deep Forest. It was also the first real world circuit that came to the franchise.
As a real world circuit the track always had the same layout, although the color theme was a bit more green in some games and more brown in others. Until GT6 the track was officially called Mazda Raceway but then the sponsorship was changed to WeatherTech.
Laguna Seca features one of the most iconic corners of all real world race tracks with the infamous "corkscrew".
As you can see in the video GT5 and GT6 look very similar, while GT7 looks pretty similar to GT Sport. However, the PS2 games GT3 and GT4 look completely different from each other, with GT3 probably being the most unique Gran Turismo game in terms of both graphics and physics.
In each game I am using the featured version of the Dodge Viper GTS-R, which is the '99 version of the Le Mans car from Team Oreca in GT2, the '00 version in GT3-GT6 and the '15 Group 3 race car in GT Sport and GT7.
I am using the softest race tires that are available in each game, no further upgrades or setup changes and automatic transmission. The only assists are the standard ABS and also TCS in GT Sport and GT7.
GT 2-4 were played on emulator, GT 5-6 on PS3 and GT Sport and GT7 on PS5. The units are set to miles in each game, since the NTSC versions of GT1-GT3 don't have a km setting and I want to keep the units consistent throughout the video.
I have spent a lot of time on the track to record the fastest and cleanest laps possible for this video, as you can probably tell from some of the lap counters. Hopefully people will appreciate the effort that I put into this video to make it as good as possible. :)

Gran Turismo 7 is certainly favorably different from the previous series. It is very noticeable how closely close to reality: the sound of sliding tires, visual effects. The feeling of a car began to be felt as it seems to me, from the 7th part.
Looks like someone was having some fun on Gran Turismo 4...

Amazing how it took them 5 games to get a viper to sound even remotely close to what it sounds like in real life....

@@PetrolHead209 GT2/3/4/PSP are using similar sound, since "1999" PS1 era. However none of those aren't realistic enough, in real life sound is exactly similar that Viper GTS-R Race Car GT3 from GT Sport.

A lot of the cars in Gran Turismo games sound really bad. The C5-R in GT4 sounds nothing like the actual car.

Honestly. Listen to the Sauber C9 in GT 5 & 6😬 Edit: even the GT4 sound was terribly inaccurate

Interesting how the lap times got slower as the game developed, however not slow enough compared to reality. For the statistic nerds. GT2 - 1.11.093 GT3 - 1.15.756 GT4 - 1.14.700 (bucked the trend) GT5 - 1.17.929 GT6 - 1.18.584 GT Sport - 1.19.382 GT7 - 1.19.345 For reality GT3 class pole lap 2017 Audi R8 1.23.961 - And I added these others for comparisons. MotoGP pole lap 2008 Casey Stoner - Ducati 1.20.700 (lap record, the last race was in 2011) Indycar pole lap 2021 Colton Herta 1.10.589

Probably a bit slower if RH tires were used. RS grip is crazy unrealistic to use on anything below an LMP car, even then it might be pushing it

Interestingly, he used GT Sport's super soft tires. All other tires were just softs.

GT's Racing Soft tires are completely wild in terms of grip. The times would probably be a bit closer to realistic if RH tires were used.

Olha essa nova geração! Os carros ficam presos no chão a traseira não se perde e não dá pra ver a lateral dos carros nas curvas. Uma sensação de que todos os carros são iguais.
It's really noticeable here how unrealistic the brake distances were in the old games. In the GT2/3/4 clips, I felt like yelling STOOOOOP way before they started braking at the first corner. But they made it around just fine.

The old games weren’t very realistic. There is no way any Viper is putting up a 1:11. That is like F1/Group C category. 7 is the only one putting up resistor times.

GT3's laguna seca feels somewhat off compared to GT4's. I wonder if it was from legal reasons or just technical limitations. Edit: I think it might be the different camera angle in GT3 making it look weird

I thought amazing the feeling on the descent part, already on gt2. They did an awesome job. I would say, at least for the descent, gt2 and 3 goes better than 4 and 5.
how do you get your gt3 to run at widescreen like that, i can’t figure out why my ps2 doesn’t set up like that despite changing my settings on the system and in the game

Completely agree, first game I played in 3rd view. But after that, I only play first person. Give a better sense of speed. At least for me.

GT5 and GT6 are horribly and laughably terrible in graphics Especially compared to how much PD showed off in the trailers They literally look worse than the PS2 era and the PS2 era had an excuse to look like shit

Gran Turismo 6 at times looks even worse than 5. The PS3 GPU really held back that machine. A lot of people have been able to emulated GT5/6 on PC at 4k resolution and with the effects turned up it looks very close to Sport.
