Evolution of Geddy Lee's Voice [ISOLATED] 1974-2012 - Rush

As the title says. Tried to add some variation. Obviously I don't have all the multitracks but Ultimate Vocal Remover does a great job.

People either hated or loved his voice, very little in between.. I happened to love it because it was just so unique, no one sounded like him and if fit the music Rush made so well.

It trips me out that people hate it. It boggles my mind that he can wail away the way he does while TEARING it up on the bass! He is amazing! They all are. Truly at a level like NO OTHER BAND before them or after them! They are truly treasures!

When it comes to discussions of truly great rock vocalists, Geddy Lee is often overlooked. However, he's easily right up there with Daltry, Plant, Gillan, Coverdale, and a few others who could croon softly and scream and wail to perfection. *What* a voice!

Geddy is a musical mastermind. You never really feel like you are missing something. Even with one man playing 3 or more parts. It sucks that the only thing people tend to gripe about is his voice being high-pitched at times. But only non vocalist would ever say that about Geddy Lee. I think his voice is perfect, and it has really held up throughout the years.

In my personal opinion, it's Camera Eye. The Moving Pictures/Signals era was the best "mix" of his old voice and his slightly lower (and smoother) voice. Thinking back, there are parts of Freewill and Jacob's Ladder where he's lower as well, so it started a little there as well. @@Bartysquire

Can't beat those wails from the 70s! Missing The Fountain of Lamneth though... specifically No One At the Bridge. "Scream out desperation, BUT no one cares to hear"

For me I think Geddy's voice peaked in the 80's. Much more polished between Moving Pictures and Power Windows. But his high screeches and falsettos in the 70's was pure classic raw and hard Rush which got me hooked in the first place. By the 2000's good ol age started to get the best of him. Their last 3 albums brought their music back to heavy rock territory, but the vintage Geddy voice was sadly no more. Just my 2 cents. ;)

It's actually kinda nuts how different his voice sounds from Closer To The Heart to The Trees, sounds like it's partly intentional but largely just from the development of his technique and vocal chords after all that touring, whether he was fully aware of it or not.

Great video! Like many rock singers, a study of Geddy's voice over the years is to hear it steadily drop in pitch. He did his best to keep hitting those high notes, but after around 1980 or so, he was no longer singing the intro part to "Overture" from 2112. I'd say the voice he had on "All The World's A Stage" went away for good around 1979. Geddy is one of my all-time favorite singers!
