As an engineer, that 3D printed jig insert was absolutely brilliant! If you want to have a higher degree of precision over the spacing, you could either use a digital caliper to set the position of each insert relative to some fixed reference point, or you could print a Vernier scale onto the top edge of the insert and print a matching scale to be attacheched to the top of the wood. A Vernier scale could theoretically give you the ability to control thickness down to below 0.001in (0.0254mm) by eye without extra tools. However the digital calipers are generally simpler to use, if you've got some money to spend on them and don't mind having to remeasure everytime you set the jig up

The creativity and ingenuity involved in creating different kinds of yaruki never ceases to amaze me. That jig for doing the diagonal cuts is very clever!
The 3D printed jig is very smart, I wouldn't have thought of that.

When you say it took half a year to make do you mean it took 6 months to figure out how to cut it efficiently? It looks like you have found a great method. I had never seen wood cut this way before I found your channel. It is so satisfying to watch the way it bends when you finish each piece.🙂

the things you can do with wood are amazing
I've been watching and wondering finish product, good job bro
すげぇ!
I have a question. Would using stabilizing resin on some of this wood possibly make for a more durable yaruki? I am not entirely familiar with the properties of stabilizing resin, but I know that when you use it, you're apparently supposed to use a vacuum chamber to withdraw all of the air from the thing you want to stabilize. Wood is somewhat porous, so I wonder if you force that resin into its pores, then set the resin, will the yaruki retain its "elasticity"? Will the whole piece go stiff? Will it become brittle?
@floatingpiss

I would also worry it would become brittle, worth a try though.

Is it possible to do all the cuts on one side all the way down the length of the wood, then flip the piece and do all the other cuts on the other side? This way you only need to flip the wood once during the whole cutting procedure.
@AnnaMorimoto
2 жыл бұрын
It would become too elastic and flexible to make evenly spaced cuts to the second side.
@shigaraja
2 жыл бұрын
same as Anna. but the wood also becomes substantially more fragile the more is taken away giving rise to unwanted breaks and cracks on the other half.
@jama211
2 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking... but if fragility is the issue, why not make the rig also hold the entire yaruki together firmly on all sides except where the cut is happening? Could be possible...
