Im impressed that you were able to do this all on your own in the garage, its nightmarish unless you have a fit buddy to help fit the transmission. Its so detailed that its deceptively easy to do, when in fact it isn't unless on a hoist with supporting equipment. Even then theres two dudes working on it. Very Impressed!!

Very handy video, thanks. I'm about to make a similar video for my Legnum VR4 and explaining where the centre differential is by linking to your video will help. I'm installing an MFactory front helical LSD but want to point out the difference between the front LSD, and also the Viscous Coupling Unit + the actual centre differential.

Nice! I'm working on an F5M51 myself. Same transmission and guts, just paired to a front diff only. Pretty soon I'll be working on stripping the output shaft to change my final drive actually, like you had mentioned. Glad I managed to stumble on your stuff! I haven't seen a good video until this on the 5M51s.

I'm trying to swap the evo 8 trans into my eclipse and was wondering if all the shifter stuff from the eclipse trans will swap onto the evo trans. I might have to build an evo trans from parts because I can't find one for a decent price.

Arguably the most important part was left out . How do you align the gears so that you can split the transmission apart ? Probably not called gears tho .

There are different size shims that are available for rebuilding these. I guess the service manual shows you how to check the tolerances for it but a video would be nice lol. I'm thinking of building an evo trans from parts and I dont know what shims to get. They have the different sizes listed on jacks transmissions website.

So my third gear recently started grinding when I shift into it so I changed out the synchro and it kinda solved the problem. It doesn’t grind when I’m gentle with it but it grinds when I go into the gear fast! I don’t miss the shift either lol but I was wondering what else can it be?

Great video. I tried to take apart my 6 speed for shits when swapping to my 5 speed. I could not find ANYTHING online about how to open it up - it was a pain. 5 speed looks much easier to open up mainly because the 6 speed had a bunch of balls and spring detents that are not one assembly like was shown here on the 5 speed. In addition, I could not get the shift forks or shafts out because somehow I think I locked them together. Regarding the bushings mentioned at 1:50, here is a link to the parts. I ordered: - Mitsubishi 5-Speed Gear Select Shaft Cover - Evo 4-9/x $1.85 - Mitsubishi 5-Speed Gearshift Equipment Bushing - Evo 4-9/x $2.82 - Mitusbishi 5-Speed Gearshift Selector Bushing - Evo 4-9/x $2.82 stmtuned.com/collections/evolution-7-8-9-oem-mitsubishi-shifter-cables-parts ^I personally try to avoid STM because I don't really like their prices, but they are great for OEM parts. My 5 speed shifts so smoothly from Nuetral to 1 that I literally sometimes worry that the gear linkage has come undone LOL.

The fact that ASM uses Chrome sockets on an impact says alot. I'll definitely never take anything there.
