wow this comment section has surprised me with how positive the response to this film was. I thought it was garbage. I thought it had zero atmosphere. There was barely a moment in the film where I felt like I was watching a horror film, it felt more like a video game cutscene than a film, or a silly action movie. the directing, editing and the musical score drew way too much attention to itself. The quick editing and crooked camera angles made it feel amateurish and impossible to become immersed in. The musical score was the worst, it was constantly telling me how to feel, and I hate musical scores like that. like it's going, "Just so you know, this is a jump scare, REACT." It's like, dude, if the scare works, you don't need the musical score to force it. But I guess that's what you do when you're a director who has no idea how to build atmosphere. but the person I saw it with loved it, as apparently everyone in this comment section did, so maybe I'm broken.

I have a strong feeling we could be seeing more of both Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland in future film roles, if they keep this up. The 2013 Evil Dead helped launch Jane Levy’s career, and she’s been delivering ever since. I could see the same happening for these two. Though, I hope if their careers take off, they work a bit on keeping a more consistent accent. When I saw this as the Closing Night Film, all I kept thinking was that Sutherland and especially Sullivan’s native Australian accents kept poking in through their dialogue. It was the most in-and-out accent I’d heard since Princess Leia in A New Hope. I think they can do well enough if they work on it though.

@@eu_o_andy When you're an actor, it's part of your job to effectively portray the character you're cast as. And if part of that character involves adopting an accent different than your own, part of the key is keeping that accent consistent, or the illusion is hurt or ruined. Both of the actresses are Australian, yet were playing American characters. And so, when they're delivering lines of dialogue, and their native Australian accents keep slipping into their lines, it can take people out of the scenes. I'm not saying it's impossible to be a foreign actor and maintain an American accent. Australian actresses like Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett, and Rose Byrne have convincing enough American accents, and you'd sometimes forget they're Australian. So it can be done.

True. Title sequence alone justifies bookended content-but I actually thought it did provide a foundation on how the deadites leave the apartment for future movies. Plus I thought it was great to see how the beginning part tied into the rest of the movie.
I'm so excited to see it. I like how it mixes up somethings to keep it fresh, because how many Evil Dead movies can you set in a Cabin in the woods without it becoming stale? Just saw this last night. I would say it was really good. Definitely had scenes where I squirmed in my seat. Not a movie filled with jokes but there was one scene between the sisters that made me laugh. Definitely a good watch.
Saw it in the theater. I'm a massive fan of this franchise and get pumped whenever another entry's on the horizon. Unfortunately this film wasn't it. While it was a decent horror film in general, it was basically a beat for beat rehash of the original story, just in a different setting. By the end, I was left wondering why this film needed to exist. Shoehorned Easter eggs aren't enough--I want to see actual growth in the franchise.
The opening and closing sequences seemed to be more setting up the fact that Evil is loose in this world. It's free in a way that we haven't really seen in modern times, at least as far as the films are concerned. Obviously, it was a reference to the cabin in the woods setting as well, but more meant to be set up for future installments.
Im glad I pay for no commercials only to have the host give you a commercial.
Chris never disappoints. His reviews are always the best.
Was so disappointed with this...I was so bored I thought it was a 2.5hr film, was shocked to find out it was only 1.5hrs.
Just watched it at a drive in theater last night, I’m a huge evil dead fan and my girlfriend had never seen them before, but she loves horror movies. (Doesn’t make sense, right?) she had no idea what the book was or what was going on to be fair and she loved it, she loved how chaotic the whole film was. I also agree on the pacing, this movie felt like it was 30min long because of how well the pacing was executed in the movie. This is definitely on my list of favorites.
Watching it this weekend !!
As someone with a highly toxic "family," I can guarantee that it would be far harder for me to hurt a friend or the person I love if they or said "family" turned evil. 😛
this movie just reaffirms how much of a gem 2013 evil dead is; rise in no way reaches the heights of that entry, no pun intended. 2013 has a true and heavy horror feel to it that made this one feel like a filler episode.

This feels more like evil dead
Good to see Richard D. James still getting work in posters and thumbnails.
I thought the bookending cabin was good. I think it not only set us up for what we’re used to seeing (only to turn us around and change the environment). But it also shows that this ‘infection’ is contagious. It’s no longer just an isolated incident. Once the book is read, the evil begins to spread well beyond the bounds it was released in.
Being a huge fan of Evil Dead in general, I’m always happy to get more. I really like the 2013 requel/remake. This one comes along and I love it just as much. Both have their own strength and weaknesses. The best aspect of both 2013 and Rise is the fact that the story is always related to some true to life fear or problem. 2013 mirrored the possessions to drug addiction and how that effects others around you. Evil Dead Rise relates the possessions to the fear of Child bearing and motherhood. Which both help ground our characters. Speaking of characters, this one has way better cast than the 2013. As those characters, besides Mia, we’re all played by hot people playing dumb characters. Evil Dead Rise just gives us what feels like family that actually has a couple of likeable characters. I found myself feeling slightly bad for the Brother and really liking the little girl. Expecting her to be annoying, but she wasn’t. The note of the characters not being to flushed out is fine. As the producers and creators understand exactly what people are coming to the theater for. They are looking for blood and guts, so usually character development is second to that. On the topic of twist, the ways they integrate the cliches/tropes of Evil Dead are amazing. Such as using the turn table to learn and understand new lore, but getting the incantation in a dramatic way. Or how their front door is treated like the cellar door in the past films. Really displays some smart and creative writing. This one has a few moments of laughter, but it remained more on the heavy side. Being able to get a cooler demon presence by the end was a great edition. As 2013 had a lacking final boss. By the end, really enjoyed it and will give it an 8/10.
This franchise is the best (or at least most consistent) horror series. It’s certainly my favorite. Absolutely loved this one, I want to see it again already.

All good movies, a good remake and a good television series. It's hard to argue that.
Keep up the great movie reviews.
I love how all of the Evil Dead movies have a formula that it follows but it's like a remix yet it works so well. My favorite is always the third act, where "The Evil Dead" super monster appears and it is FUUUUCKED lmao this one with all the practical effects is sooo charming and endearing in a messed up way.
I think what a lot of reviewers are missing is that the opening and ending alludes to the continuation of the franchise if well recieved, the demons are lose and have not been contained. So the next movie will show the rise of the army of darkness 2.0, that's just my guess/theory

That would be great
Just got back from the cinema and I have to say I was impressed. The 2013 is my favourite from the franchise , but this one definitely delivered. Can't wait to watch it again in the comfort of my own home. I went to see it with a friend, so it'll be interesting to see my husbands reaction 😂
Solid review. I loved it. Sound was stellar. Practical effects and gore were satisfying. The story was set up and paced fantastically. Homages and elements of previous Evil Dead classics and influences of other movies like Aliens (the vents, motherhood) and The Thing (final creature) were great. Instant classic imo. Easily a 9/10 movie.
Nice job saying factor the most times possible in the money plug there. Love your stuff man
Just saw it! What a DAMN good movie! This is right up there with the 2013 movie, which freaking blew me away.

That title reveal was amazing!!!!
HAHA i have been waiting for this review chris!! Friday is instantly better!!
Chris, please keep grading the films. I thoroughly enjoyed it when you grade them.
I hated the 2013 remake but this movie was really satisfying especially the "DEAD BY DAWN" scene was hype as helllllll
In the beginning there is the cabin scene where the girl killed all her friends, then it says “1 day earlier”. At the end of the movie that girl in the garage is the one that gets taken over at the beginning. It all ties in.
This looks amazing…. Can’t wait till I see it tomorrow!!!!
Evil dead rise definitely feel like a checklist, the only savings grace is the pacing as I got bored at 55 min. It's just way too tame trying to go down the violence path

Yeah. Same here. I'm a big fan of the franchise... just found this one really boring and predictable.
This was definitely one of, if not th best entry in the series. I think the entire cast did a fantastic job. The score & audio cues were simply fantastic in Dolby. They also really went all out with the gore without it feeling completely over the top. Man, 2023 is really hitting all the right spots overall. Keep them coming!
Gonna be looking out for a 'woods' scene in shelby oaks
Watching your sponsor TV meal without the music made me thinking I was watching a clip from the Evil Dead Rise movie. The knife cutting....😅
It sucks. The acting of the kids are very horrible. Feels like a zombie apocalypse. It took place in the city yet no police visibility after earthquake even though the stairs are messed up? And some neighbors have no idea what was happening? And why the hell there's a grinder in the parking??
A real good horror movie I’m so glad that they did not disappoint the Evil Dead Fans
