Evil Dead II At Those Movies

Here's 1987's sequel to Evil Dead that is superior to the original..that's if you love crazy time travel movies and believe that Ash is a God.

Ebert loved Making Mr. Right though. He gave it 3.5 stars. Seems like Siskel must've made some kind of wisecrack about it. KZread has the full movie for free viewing, both on their official channel and a copy someone posted years ago. They've long ago given up on making any money off of Making Mr. Right, LOL.

This is one of the best horror movies ever made. It inspired an entire Evil Dead TV series with Bruce Campbell in the lead. Self-absorbed movie critics need to open the Book of the Dead.

I wonder if Siskel ever really got understand the general impact this series really did have on cinema going forward and whether he got to appreciate the series untraditional but nonetheless perfectly linear narrative. It eventually did find footing as a series that could be properly viewed in one continuous narrative but its fair if Siskel never got to see that. Cool that Ebert got tho cause audiences definitely did too.

How can the films be viewed in one continuous narrative when the sequel is a remake of the original film? To be more specific, the sequel begins with remaking the first movie, minus 3 of the characters, a totally different plot, and Ash getting possessed. There's nothing linear about these movies.

@@MattrickBT To be fair, it really doesn't work as a linear series at face value. Just watching them for the first time, you'd never see that. But as a fan, once you watched all three enough times, you can sort of see a linear story forming once you forgive the second movie's new opening. Just cut the two openings of ED2 and AOD, ignore Ash's aging and you have a full story of a guy who survives a demon attack only to be possessed by the end, wakes up possessed in the sequel and has to deal with more travelers which ends with him back in time, and then the third where he fights demons in the past and gets back home to work. Basically 2 days of fighting demons in a cabin then a week back in time before he returned from that first cabin trip. It is alot of "using your imagination" but if anybody wanted to see a full edited version of all 3 as one movie, some fan did that and uploaded it online years ago. I'm not sure how to find the link but with a bit of digging I'm sure anyone could if they like. That's what I was referring to when I said it's a shame Siskel didn't live to see it made.

I was disappointed with the first film and when I spotted the sequel on the shelf of a local video store I struck more by the box art and rented it with very low expectations. WOW!!! Those initial reservations were quickly laid to rest within the first ten minutes and I knew immediately that this was destined to be a modern classic of the horror genre. Sam Raimi keeps a very delicate balance between the horror and humor, never allowing one to overshadow the other. It's scary and funny in equal measures. The scene where the furnishings of a room come to life is genuinely creepy and exceptionally well staged, especially that demonic deer that starts its maniacal laugh. But the standout moment is when Ash is beaten up by his demon possessed hand. Bruce Campbell commits to the punishment being inflicted. He made a personal appearance at the theatre where I worked when we did a screening for a film he directed. We saw very little of him as he zipped across the lobby and disappeared to the men's room and then back to the theatre. I wanted to get a couple co-workers to shout out: Hey, Smitty, how's about grabbing a highball!! Bonus points for those who know where this line comes from.
