What the hell is buttermilk and what's it used for, what does it do and where to find it? We're gonna talk about all that today in this video. Buttermilk is commonly found in North America it is used in many many baked goods and cooking, it is similar to yogurt because they are both cultured and fermented. It is not easy to find buttermilk outside of America or Canada but it's not a problem at all if your favorite pancake recipe calls for buttermilk, it is super easy to make it at home with 2 ingredients only!

Homemade Buttermilk
Yields 1 cup
1 Tablespoon unsweetened cultured yogurt
*sour cream, creme fraiche or kefir, anything that has live cultures in it will work )
1 cup whole or low fat milk
Quick Buttermilk Substitutes
Yields 1 cup
1/2 cup unsweetened cultured yogurt
*sour cream, creme fraiche or kefir, anything that has live cultures in it will work )
1/2 milk
If you're really in a pinch...do this
Yields 1 cup
1 Tablespoon white distilled vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup milk
*this method is good for using a small amount only or baked goods that already have a strong flavor such as chocolate cake, it can also be used for marinating fried chicken.

    We South Indians (esp Tamils) used to take Buttermilk everyday. It helps us to digest the spicy foods smoothly. We usually take it after the food. We dilute it a lot with water. We usually say that as long as you dilute it well, it will keep your digestive system cool. So 1/2 glass thick buttermilk + 1/2 glass water & don't forget to stir.

    That makes sense cause buttermilk is fermented so it’s got live cultures that are good for our gut. Same reason why I love eating yogurt
