Based on previous comment, I’m very much the exception to your audience. Absolute neophyte to recording although I have now purchased all of the components listed, most, coincidentally, the exact same brand. Very, very much enjoyed this video and if it’s in the context of your focus, would appreciate learning how to interface the Akai keyboard controller to the DAW. I found the Akai instructions (and customer support) severely lacking. Thanks for you insight and channel. Great info!!

Mixer-interfaces are worth consideration! Like the Flow8 and the Tascam Model 12 (and 16 and 24) which can interface all channels at once (not just two like many similar mixers) are also very worth considering! He's got a Model 12 on his desk there. The Flow8 definitely has the best value though

I am confused on how big of a studio monitor (KRK Gen 4 is what I am looking at), what OHM for headphones (DT 700 Pro X is what I am looking at), and what free DAW software is best to set up a studio in my house. I am only going to be recording my guitar/vocal as a base, then adding individual tracks of violin, viola, cello, harmonica and maybe an additional vocal. Is the 2i2 and Audacity software a good match for me? Cost is biggest factor, followed by the fact that i am a very basic musician and im doing this more for the fun of it than for serious quality. For basic stuff, it’s fine. The feel of the keys isn’t great, especially if you’re used to a piano. The drum pads feel ok, but definitely not the best out there. I think you get a lot for the money, but you can’t expect to get what you could if you spend more…

I purchased one six months ago and have mixed feelings. First and foremost the available Akai information (printed and/or online) is minimal and seems to assume you are an expert, not a beginner. There is nothing I could find explaining the actual dials and buttons and how to interface with various DAW. sent their customer service contact email several questions and it literally took months to get a reply and the response was…well…worthless. If you have experience with controllers, it’s a nice inexpensive unit. If not, stay away.

I haven't invested in studio monitors and continue to use my Bluetooth speakers 2.1 for the sound. Any reason I should give up a good speakers for specialized studio monitors?

I like the computer monitor set up you have. Are you using 2 of the same Dell monitors on an arm?

hello my friend, is it not easier to use hardware gear instead of PC as the software may not be easy to use as the gear, what do you think?

There are 2 mic preamps built-in to the 2i2. External mic preamps just offer a variety of tone and perhaps more power.

Another fantastic video as always man. One counterpoint I'd like to make however on your saying "you can't go wrong with either microphone option", in certain circumstances I might disagree. In the case where one could afford either or even in the case where someone could afford a higher quality condenser, I think it's important to consider the recording environment one has available to them. If someone only has access to a space with uncontrollable noise conditions (ie unfinished basement with ac/furnace/noisy pipes, apartment by busy street etc), and they're not able to compensate with proper treatment/isolation, then I think in any budgetary case that person would always be far better off going with a quality dynamic mic. Personally when I'm toying with a casual personal project at home, especially during winter when the furnace is blasting through the vents, I'll go with a 58 or 7b every time and get a much better sound than if I had reached for any objectively "nicer" LD condenser. That aside, in a room where acoustics are adequate then I'd definitely agree that you couldn't go wrong with either mic type!

Thanks for leaving this comment, Kai! Going with a tighter polar pattern mic like the Shure SM57 could definitely help in those situations. Great point.

Kia Ora Kyle & all those that read and reply to comments. First time studio setup here. Trying to pick the best single mic for bass, amp cabs (bass and guitar), acoustic instruments and haha possibly singing. What are your thoughts about the Shure SM7B ? I know that you recommended the two and or one or the other. Thoughts?? Bye for now.

I think the SM7B would work well for everything you’ve listed, except acoustic guitar. I’d lean more toward a more sensitive microphone for acoustic instruments.

Hi, At this point I actually have a decent beginners studio set up. If I want to record a music video (myself playing guitar against something like band in a box and want to then be able to edit the audio in my DAW (cakewalk) so I can add reverb, compression etc.. Then I want to output everything into one file for my you tube page. and I want the video and audio to still be sync'd. I would think recording the video and audio simultaneously as a single two track, audio and video file would be the best way to do this. Can you do a tutorial in the recording of this audio-video file o is there a better way to do this? Thank you.

For instruments recorded together, I recommend a mixing table before the usb sound device. I prefer my computer not to be connected to internet and using Air, Wifi, Bluetooth. As I use old material softwares older are not usable in later versions Of Apple nor Windows systems. So for a beginner you better buy all new at the same time, hardwares as softwares, or All older being compatible together. That's makes me having three sound hardwares, four computers, from windows 95, to Win Seven and two Apple with two incompatibles systems with recent softwares. I have keyboards from the eighties, as recent midi 88 heavy piano keys, and two as not having midi or memory inside. '' the sound must go on '' I'm not interested in technical aspects, but the sounds I can play, and some of them can be find only on some particular synths, or conceptual virtual instruments. In that case so my installation is more delicate, separate two amps, two mixing tables, effects racks, some recording softwares, different in win and apple, and more virtual instruments opened at the same time on different computers, screens and keyboards. In future I will buy some synths by Berhinger, wich are very good remakes of legendar synths and mostly in rack's size so more tiny and easy to use. I have some microphones, one is a dynamic, the others are large membrane one in USB, useful for direct connection to computers. My Headphones and loudspeakers are old, but I have the choice between two pairs of LP, and three Head phones. I support only those who cover the ears, so i've an other chinese one I prefer to them. Around the world most people listen music in mp3 with their smartphone!...they as not have good stereophony , so sometimes, we are the own listening our music in good conditions. Sad!

I have a question. I recently purchased the mk2. At the present time, the only laptop I have has 6g rams & 500g . I know it is said it should be the minimum of 8g. Can I get away with 6 until I purchase a better laptop & desktop? Also I recently tried to install the Arturia MK2 package and just get a blank screen every time I go to the download & register page.

Yes. An audio interface can be used to record singing also. You will need a microphone and an audio interface. Alternatively, you can use a USB microphone.
