Electron, Neutron, Proton, Plasma... Confused by all the MVP plastic blends? And what's all this gyro stuff about? In this video I'll look at everything you need to know about MVP including Axiom and Streamline brands. I'll cover a brief history of the company, look at the science of MVP discs and then run through all the different plastic types.

I am a marketing success story with MVP. I never thought to have tried the disc brand until James won worlds. The first one I bought was a proton axiom mayhem and I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with how the disc felt in my hand and the snap it had on release. Especially since I am forehand dominant off the tee. The Gyro technology really helps me dial in a shot and just feels so smooth almost like petting a puppy out of the hands. I don’t think I will use any other brands for drivers now. I’d try the other discs but my local disc golf store can’t keep envy’s in stock long enough. I wonder why that is lol

Envies are AWESOME throwing putters, imo the best backhand throwing putter ever. If you have a smooth forehand, you can flick them, but they're too deep for a lot of people. I have to throw mine extra smooth, and it only goes 250' ish for me. I bought my first MVP disc because I liked James and was curious to see if his switch was a good move, and now I'm hooked too! Glad I got my envy before he won worlds!

Cheers to engineering! I'm a mechanical engineer. I was drawn to the overmolds because of the science behind it but actually ended up switching away a couple years later because of my inability to impart the greater snap that the discs require compared to a single mold disc. I'm glad that you mentioned that part because I feel like these discs aren't necessarily for everyone. People with a very short acceleration period (better snap) on their throw will have the most success with them. That being said, I think their drivers, being flat and enhanced by the gyro effects, are easily the best discs on the market for forehand throws because they are easy to grip and they fight off-axis torque really well.

Given that forehands suffer from far lower spin rates than backhands, there is a greater discrepancy between flippy and stable discs for forehand throwers, albeit very slight. I personally love my photons for flicks, and I'm very sad about losing my Nitro, what a disc it was. I agree that the lower profile makes them awesome feeling in the hand though. I absolutely love my new fireball and volt for forehands too! Also props to you for not being a failed engineer like me (material science) lol

I suspect that the denser outer rim will benefit more on discs that you want to just fly flat, like a driver you'd want to just go straight and far. And for correcting slight angle mistakes when you intended to throw flat. And that they may actually be an impediment to shot-shaping, where you want it to keep an angle. Gyrocospic effect will always have something tend to go back to horizontal (or vertical). So I wouldn't use this concept for every disc in my bag.

I've been bagging a plasma Envy for the past few years and it's my go--to approach putter. I found it interesting that it is compared to something like G-Star. I have found that discs in G-Star are a bit too floppy for my taste. I haven't found this with MVP and I'm guessing it's due to the overmold giving it some structure. Love your videos!

Love to hear an engineer talk about MVP's technology. I see lots of folks with opinions about how the Gyro tech affects flight, but what about rollers? Would the Gyro technology make the discs more or less susceptible to rollaways?

  • @DiscGolfDownUnder

    @DiscGolfDownUnder

    2 жыл бұрын

That's an interesting point. From an engineering point of view, a gyro disc with higher moment of inertia will resist initial rolling. But if it does get up to speed, it will want to keep rolling. So in the end it probably cancels out as some will stop earlier and others will roll for longer.

There are MANY different discs on the market, “claiming” to be “different” from other discs, yet…….most discs “seem” to be almost identical in flight, despite the numbers on the discs. For once, it would be nice to see videos describing the differences between the various discs.

I suspect that rotation loss due to air resistance is low, but when contacting objects, it's high. The extra inertia should matter most when it hits an object or the ground. MVP should make some anti-gyro approach discs with low rotational inertia for when you want the disc to stop on the ground or not glide after a tree hit.

Don't know too much about the Excite. 13 speed is my limit and even then I struggle to get them up to speed. I do like the Catalyst. Similar flight rating but speed 13. It hyzer flips nicely for me but do find it a bit touchy. Even the hint of a headwind and it just keeps going right.

I would generally say the move is to start with about an 8 or 9 speed. My innova Valkyrie is my money hyzerflip/standstill disc, both forehand and backhand, but I know my buddy swears by his Inertia (same numbers, but one more glide). You'll be amazed how incredibly far a hyzer flip can go when you're throwing at the proper speed for the disc. I used to have a Daedelus (13 6 -3 2) that was way flippy but the second it finished flipping it dumped left because I didn't have the arm to keep it at a good speed for the duration of its flight. Bear in mind that I'm saying all this of 475-550' throws in field work, I don't have a wuss arm lol. The biggest thing about MVP for me is how straight their discs fly in the middle of the flight. They flip up and ride for days before fading much more gently than single-mold discs rated with less fade.

The "gyro effect" is felt by every disc. This is a point that most descriptions of increased MOI discs don't clarify. Thanks MVP overmold discs increases the gyro effect by ever so little. Your demo with the tops exaggerates the difference. The important bit is that when the MOI is increased, it takes more torque to achieve the same angular velocity which leads to more angular momentum which creates more gyro effect. So, the increased flight stabilization is only realized if the person throwing the disc can add extra torque. However, when the torque is increased for any disc, it's angular momentum (flight stability) will increase as well. I, personally, can achieve only a certain amount of torque. I quickly arrive at a point that the increased MOI doesn't help me and may hinder me because I can't torque it enough. On the other hand. I've noticed that when throwing down hill where I get a boost from gravity the higher MOI discs seem to not flip or turn as much. Same thing happens when throwing into a head wind where the airspeed is increased by the wind. Another point about MVP discs is that every mold I have (only 3) seems to be flatter than other manufacturers. Case in point, look at the profiles between a Relay and a Leopard (not leopard 3). Wave v Surge SS. and Photon v Wraith. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the more domey a disc is the more lift it has. Lift is the torque that causes the disc to "turn" (precess) at high speed.

  • @DiscGolfDownUnder

Pretty much agree with everything you say about MOI. As for domey discs I'd say you're just unlucky. I've got 8 Photons and they range from board flat to really domey. The domey ones have more turn and fly forever.

@@DiscGolfDownUnder Really? I would think every Photon would have the same profile. Doesn't speak to well to MVPs quality control. In your opinion, why are some flat and others domey? "The domey ones have more turn" Exactly. They turn more because they have more lift.

shopping for the Volt, I learned that the flight path is very different in Electron, versus the others. Electron is -2, 1.5, whereas the others are -0.5, 2. Cosmic numbers are like for the others, not like Electron in the flight numbers at all, so I feel you could have touched upon that enough at 7:22 as his could lead to some confusion.

I’ve been curious, wouldn’t any disc with a proton rim basically not have any gyro scopic advantages? I thought the whole thing was that they use a denser plastic on the rim but if they use proton then it’s not more dense and therefore no gyro advantage. Is this true?
