Everything You Need to Know About Charging The Mustang Mach-E Charging In 15 minutes

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I produced an "Ultimate Charging Guide For The Mustang Mach-E" video for InsideEVs (see link below), but it was 40-minutes long and some of my followers asked if I could make a condensed version. So I decided to make this video and gave myself only 15 minutes to say as much about Ford Mustang Mach-E charging as I could. I ended up going 15 seconds too long, but I think most will forgive me. :)

    Nice. Great video. I own a MME and you covered just about everything. The only thing to add is that I would highly recommend installing a charger at home and keeping the mobile charger in the car at all times. It adds to the comfort knowing I can charge anywhere, particularly when visiting families and friends for long or overnight stays or during winter when range is shorter. I also bought the Tesla mini-tap on your recommendation just in case I want to charge at any Tesla ‘destination’ (i.e., non-dc fast charge) station. Haven’t used it yet, but nice to have and it doesn’t take up much space (fits in glove compartment).

    Hey Tom keep coming the good videos. I have a question that I think it will be a great video for you, the new F-150 Lightning will be able to charge at home at 80 amps, so how big it has to be your breaker to handle it and also how many amps your panel needs to be able to handle. I know Ford will have companies to help you with this but since I’m getting solar panels to make energy for my next truck 😉 I want to know if I have to upgrade my circuit panel. Thanks Tom and keep the good work! 👋😎

    Thanks for all your videos; I have learned a lot from you as I prepare to go electric. In this video, you mentioned that the included Ford EVSE, in Level 2 mode, may be all that one may need. I have read elsewhere that NEMA 14-50 receptacles are not designed for frequent connect/disconnect cycles. If I were going to be carrying the EVSE with me frequently and also using it at home, would it be desirable to get a heavier-duty receptacle, if such a thing exists? If so, it might be an interesting topic for a future video.

    Yes, there are commercial-grade NEMA 14-50 outlets. You can get them from electrical supply stores, not Home Depot. But people usually don't need to plug/unplug that often, actually.

    Hi Tom! Great videos. Quick question if you have the time. In your longer Mach-E charging video, you mention that since Ford is being conservative with how much battery they allow you to access, that charging to 100% percent routinely was not a problem. In this video you mention that limiting charging to 90% might be a good idea for extending the life of the battery (or words to that effect). So which do you think is best for the Mach-E?

  • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's always good to err on the side of caution. Ford recently opened up more of the usable battery pack (within the last month), so now the buffer is smaller than it previously was. However, if you think you need 100% of the battery, I wouldn't hesitate to charge to 100%. Now that the buffer is smaller, charging to like 95% is comparable to what it used to be charging to 100%

    I just bought a mme yesterday.... Less than 24 hours ago and it's my first ev... Definitely a learning curve. At least, unlike when ev's were brand new, I have all these resources on the internet to learn the important stuff without having to risk mistakes myself... Someone else already did for me. Kind of annoyed that dealer sold me mine with about 36% charge and I only have a 120v outlet at home to use. Had to work today so only about 9-10 hours charge time. Was at 51% when I left and used 10% of that to get to work 😢. I'm shocked at the price of some of the public chargers around where I live. Avg about 45 cents per kwh... Some charge by the hour (and are slow). I was hoping to save a significant amount over my former ice Ford 150 but at those rates it'd be about the same! Definitely going to aim for charging at home as much as I can where it's 7 cents per kwh until I use a certain amount (think 1500kwh 🤔) then it's 2 cents more. I see billboards up in Dallas and Houston advertising free power at night and I'm like damn... Why can't we have that in San Antonio?

    If Tesla never existed, the Mach E wouldn't either. The Mach E arrived 10 years earlier and is a better car today because of the lessons Ford (and every other manufacturer on the planet) learned from their own Tesla tear-downs. I have a 2019 S and love it, but I drove a Mach E for a week while I was getting some body work done on the S, and I came away very very impressed with the Ford. If the Mach E had a LFP battery in it, I'd buy one.

    I don't have any insight into why the networks charge what they do, only to say that currently, the utilization rate of public EV chargers is so low, that it's impossible to even break even with the cost of the installation and electricity to power the unit. I suppose they are just trying to limit the monthly losses they incur.

    Great info, however I am not sure where you are getting your numbers for cost to install the needed outlet. I am a professional electrician that has installed dozens of these for several models. The materials alone, new breaker, #6 wire, conduit, etc run a min of $150 and that's only a very short 10' span from panel to charger location. Not to mention most states require the work to be permitted. A more realistic range so people don't get surprised when they get quotes is anywhere from $600-2k and even that's assuming you have adequate space and amperage available in your panel. Personally I recommend people getting that quote before they even purchase the car.

    Would you know if it is possible to charge a mach e with a generator? I did not have any luck with my 7500 generac unit. It would start to charge and then just stop. Ford told me it is possible. I am guessing I need a more powerful generator. I was not running any thing in the house at the time either. I also tried hooking it up directly to the generator. I had to get an adapter for the ford charging unit so it would plug into the side of the generator. That didn't seem to work either.Any help would be great.

  • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    Yes it is possible, it all depends on whether the generator you're using is producing what is considered "clean electricity" That had nothing to do with it actually being clean, it really means the power delivered is consistent and not fluctuating much. A good quality generator should work, I've charged many EVs with generators in the past.

Auto industries really need to come to a generic charging standards like USB unless they don't want to see thousands of angry drivers with lots of weird dongles in the back. Imagine the annoyance its going to cause.

    For non Tesla EVs where there is a buffer already built into the battery (eg 98kWh with 88kWh of usable energy), wouldn’t it be safe to charge it to 100% Soc all the time? I thought it was only for Tesla where we need to manually reduce the max soc to 80% since Tesla allow users to utilize all 100% of the batter pack.

  • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is fine to charge the Mach-E to 100% because there is a decent buffer as you note, however, if you don't need the extra range for daily driving, then it's still a good idea to charge to 85% or 90% daily - it can't hurt. No, it's not only Tesla that uses a high percentage of the battery and recommends not charging to 100% on daily charging. For instance, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Polestar also do.

    Is anyone impressed with this charging curve? It remains at 150kW for only 5% SoC, then at 110 kW for 30%, and 75 kW for the next 40%. Clearly, it makes very little sense to wait for charging above 80% unless absolutely necessary. I believe the model Y charges at a high power level and for a longer time.
