Everything You Need to Know About a 7.3 Powerstroke in 2023 (Buying, Maintaining, Fixing, Etc.)

Ойын-сауық

The 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel is arguably one of the best truck platforms ever built. People love their 7.3's. We do too, and that's why we run them for our landscaping business! They are commonly referred to as "legendary" motors, which they were for the first 10-15 years, but now are reaching a breaking point at 20+ years old. Parts breaking, non-stop oil leaks, fuel leaks, and other problems due to simply how old the truck is: these make them far from turn-key and go without being addressed. Leaking on a customer's driveway is not an option as a professional business. This video displays common issues and what to expect/look for on one of the trucks at this time period of 2023. Having a good attitude of realizing the truck is not new is probably the most important thing because things can and will break. We show you what does break, what to fix, how to smartly purchase a truck, and everything of that sort. The video is mostly directed at 99-03s, but the same concept applies to the OBS as well. Coming very soon in a video will be a full break down and walkthrough of how to get a 7.3 back up to speed so it can be reliable again. Once we do all of the necessary gaskets, part replacements, and go-overs, we trust every one of our 7.3's to go across the country and back and be leak free and trouble free. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel, and we hope you enjoy the video!

I just got a 97 F-250 HD for $2,000. 325,000 miles. Replaced the Low pressure pump and going to do glow plugs, gaskets fuel filter, etc. Dropped the tank and cleaned those filters. New front loaded brakes. It runs great, but needs some paint. Sanding the hell out of it and putting sealing primer over it. It is going to get me across the country and be my daily for a little while. I don't think I'll ever sell it. The sound of the 7.3 at idle is awesome.

That's cool you have the time and patience for that. Most people just give up on it when it gets to that point and it's off to the dealership to the make a sales guy happy.

You’re making me feel really good about hanging on to my California (really zero rust) 02 F250 7.3 :) never towed anything. 155K and i keep a maintenance log. Now I’m going to replace the (hopefully) worn out shifter column bushings.

I agree with you about keeping these trucks. I have a 99.5 F250 and I did exactly what you guys do. Pulled the engine and completely resealed it. I also did head studs one at a time. I have dumped a lot of money in the engine, but it's not exactly going to be strictly for work. I love your videos about these 7.3 trucks.

This is the viseo Ive needed for the past 2 years. I bought my first diesel truck 2 yrs ago and need all the help i can get. It is a different beast than a gas engine 350 Chevy. My truck i bought in 2019 was a 1997 F Series Quigley 4x4 7.3L that has a 12,500# winch in a custom chrome front bumper & an 11' aluminum flat bed. When i bought it it had 26,200 original miles on it and as it sits in my drive mid-August '23 it has 29,800 miles on it. It had to have the E4OD rebuilt because it had been abused on Camp Addubery fighting grass fires. The truck has developed fuel leaks somewhere and now is so bad it starves itself atbhigh speeds. So it sounds like this is what i need to do. It doesnt matter wht the weather is, cycle the glow plugs and the thing jumps to life. I love the truck, other than the stiff ride.😂 I'm getting old enough now those super stiff springs may need to be swapped for air bags!

I lied once. I did replace the IPR 2 years ago. This allowed some oil into the engine valley. Other then that my oil pan is quite clean and original. I'm an old man and have babied this truck since new. No work truck, just towing an RV for 2 years and in later times just my car trailer move classic cars around. A few years ago I towed an OBS 5.8 F-150 to Las Vegas with no issues. In 1998 towing 10K RV fifth wheel I got above 20 MPG going west coast to east coast. Upon return from that trip Ford recalled the truck to recalibrate the PCM and immediately the gas milage dropped to 17/18 mpg towing. Other than that it's been an always running keeper truck and still love it as it looks practically the same as 1998. Good video !

A common 'road weary" oil leaker is the metal oil cooler line below the starboard (driver side) battery; it runs vertically down the radiator brace/frame on the rear/outside edge..and there is a flap/cover.. this cover actually causes the cooler line's doom because road grime/dust/sand builds up in there and then grinds a hole into the line.. and oil pisses out.

My Nevada one owner 1997 Ford F-250, 7.3 has no rust, No oil leaks, at all, all original 120K miles, well maintained, original brakes. This is the best vehicle I've ever owned. The only corrective maintenance was crank sensors, new set of glow plugs and gaskets. Also glow plug relay. No other corrective maintenance since January 1998.

Smell the oil stick for diesel too. And leave some drops of oil off the dip stick onto shop towel and if there is a halo/ring around the stain that means diesel in the oil. I like the 7.3 vids. I’m going to look at a f450 . Used to have a 250 that I regret selling. Buying older and being good on a wrench or have a good mechanic is the way to go with hd diesels for small contracting businesses. 100k new or 10k buy second and 10k in upgrades. Easy choice for me

I’m building a house and I need an old truck. I bought my first power stroke this year. it’s a 1997 F350 with electric over hydraulic dump bed kit. If you plug in, it will start immediately. No blow by or smoke and i can’t find a drip of oil anywhere on the ground where it’s been parked for two months. The motor seems very clean, the old man I bought it from says he was the second owner. It was a fleet truck when he bought it from a plumbing company, and he used it for his maintenance company Engine in greasy in the valley, but it doesn’t use any oil and there’s no drips

I like these guys. Honest and informative.👌💯 I think it's better to buy used stuff and own it straight out. Yeah you got to work on your stuff once in awhile but you have more machines and more capability at the end of the day, for less money. Also new trucks, newer equipment, Are not nearly as dependable, they are just building em worse and worse. Give me an old mechanical diesel any day over some new piece of junk that's over complicated and unreliable with planned obsolescence.

My 02 had a bunch of oil residue on the intake pipes on both sides, mostly on the passenger side. But no visible leaks anywhere. Can we say misleading thumb pic for this video? I own a 2000 7.3 with 290k and in the last 70k miles I’ve owned it, it’s only not started once due to the nut on the glow plug relay finally working its way loose. He’s just trying to get viewers. Any truck or vehicle with significant mileage will inevitably have things fail but try comparing it to a 6,0, 6.4 or even a 6.7 and the 7.3 will run circles around them reliability wise.

Hey guys I bought a sweet No Rust clean as hell, new tranny 97 f250 7.3 for 12k, 200k. I love this truck it pulls my retro 5th wheel which is now parked. I live 15 miles to town s curves about 25 min drive. I’m concerned about using my beautiful truck to commute but I want to drive it each day. Beside fluid check how can I maintain it best I can. Worried about wearing out brakes. I was told diesel oil is dark, but mine is very dark, blackish. I’m certain I need an oil change, fuel & air filter . I’ve driven about 3k miles. It seems it’s running doggish doesn’t sound as clean as a month ago. Could this be running rough because it needs an oil change? How can I as a single woman stay on top of this. I paid 12k cash and want to keep it in excellent condition and protect my investment. Love this truck and was told it could run another 200k. I drive it 50 miles about 5 days a week. I drove it from west coast and live now in NW Arkansas so it’s hot/muggy. Could I have water in fuel, plz Advz, love your videos..thx E

4 years into a 2002 f-350 with a 7.3 now with 230k miles. I don't really care for it. Fix or repair daily. Too many old leaky systems over a simple gas truck. I haul 4 thousand lb loads of green Alaskan birch in bed, a dog team, trailers usually loaded around 12,000lbs. But constant bllsht. I rebuilt turbo, hpop, hpop pedestal, fuel bowl, hpop lines, to fix all the fkn leaks. New glow plugs, relays, etc. Death by a thousand crusty o-rings. Cheesy garbage plastic like the air box had to be replaced. Had tranmission rebuilt. Next is injector cups and injector 0-rings. Even with perfect glow plug system, runs like garbage in -20 to -30 below zero here in Alaska, even full grill bib to keep cold out. Hpop quick disconect fittings worked loose, due to not using that special green thread-locker. Re-sealed those. Fkn stupid. Welded up larger battery trays to fit actual commercial sized diesel batteries over those stupid little Ford batteries. I'm going back to a simple gas truck.

@@AncientRe I own a 99 F-350 and haven’t had a car payment in 10 years. There is no free lunch here though so I stand by my original statement. Unless it’s a lawn ornament that rarely gets used any truck this age will need repairs all the time if it still sees front line action. Not that many of these are still daily driven or run hard though. That’s because they become expensive and high maintenance to keep on the road past a certain point.

The 7.3 is well known for their reliability. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Only two problems I have noted with these engines and transmissions. Low hp on most of them. Usually cured with a tuner. Just be cautious of how much hp. The automatic transmissions tend to fail on engines who use a tuner to increase hp levels when towing heavy loads.

I agree. But a lot of them haven’t been maintained and are old at this point. This video is more so directed to people buying the truck. Making sure they realize that things will need to be fixed and it most likely won’t be jump in it and drive across the country with no sweat in 2023. That’s why we made the repair video along with this one to get these things up to speed again and be as reliable as they were for the first 15 years

This dude wants 22k for a 2000 7.3 f250 superduty, manual 6 speed, flatbed, engine and transmission rebuild and have 1k, tune, frame off restoration(no rust on frame), tons of new parts, injectors have 175k on them, interior in good shape with leather and body of truck only has a touch of surface rust on some spots, added heavy duty leaf springs, s and b clutch, might be more but idk lol....with all that, is it worth 22k or is this kid just trying to cash in when the market is hot??? Are there better options for cheaper I should go with???
