► About The Game...
In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.
The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough-there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.
Banished has no skill trees. Any structure can be built at any time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money. Instead, your hard-earned resources can be bartered away with the arrival of trade vessels. These merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet; however, their lengthy trade route comes with the risk of bringing illnesses from abroad.
There are twenty different occupations that the people in the city can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to mining, teaching, and healing. No single strategy will succeed for every town. Some resources may be more scarce from one map to the next. The player can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry for rock, but all these choices require setting aside space into which you cannot expand.
The success or failure of a town depends on the appropriate management of risks and resources.

Not a good idea to build your hospital "downtown"! Every disease in Banished has a "circle of infection" (it varies by disease, but is usually a minimum of 8-10 squares) and anyone who spends time inside that circle can catch the disease. The circle still functions when the sick Bannie is in the hospital, so in an epidemic your hospital will become a major spreader. Put it our of town in a direction where people walking to it will be moving away from other people. One problem is that the hospital is a happiness attractor and people will go idle around it and get sick. As to the low health, it is related to diet. To be healthy Bannies need protein (meat and nuts), grains (wheat and corn in vanilla, mods add others), fruits and vegetables. Until you built the hunter and gatherer you had no source of fruit or protein, so very unhealthy Bannies with only vegetables. They won't get to five hearts until you get some grain seeds, no matter how many herbs they get. So happy you are doing this series.

You might want to build a Taylor soon, you are out of clothes. Once you build a bridge to that little island maybe put the Trader on it & a storage barn. 😀

A UI tip in case you (or anyone else) need it, you can also change the amount of people working a job by clicking the up and down arrows to the right of the right side number on the building where they would be working. And the other number to the left of that is how many people of that job will work on/in that building. For buildings still being built those numbers are for builders.

I think you should place a few buildings you'll need later and then press the pause button (on the right next to the building progress bar) just so you can have that space planned and so it's ready to go in case you need it urgently. You could even leave it unpaused and have all the materials for it gathered and then wait to build it until it's needed. I've found that's helped me personally (I'm also forgetful and often run into planning problems later haha).

6:15 He was a builder but then changed to a hunter. When a citizen get's a profession, it's not always going to be his or hers profession for the rest of time. The game gives professions to citizen in a way that makes to most sense (usually =D). That's why the Hunter, Gatherer, Forester live in the forest and not near the river: You weren't lucky, the game was just being smart.

In my own game where I started with "easy" start which had 5 wooden houses built along with the storage barn, I spent a in game decade growing to about 50 population and then starting families very quickly started dying off, over the course of 5 years dropping me to about 17 laborers before I got my population growing again now around year 20. Things look good now but I have very few ambitions beyond getting all my buildings back to working order. I managed to get a town hall in that time so I kept watching it for "nomads" but otherwise I was happy I got to grow my 3 max size pastures to capacity with one each of sheep, cattle, and chicken, having started the game with a small herd of sheep thanks to "easy" start.

Health of your citizens is dependent on many factors. Having plenty of firewood and high-quality clothing helps, especially in the harsher climates. On that note, you'll be needing a tailor very soon to make use of the leather your hunter is providing. But the bigger factor is food variety. Having a widely varied diet helps a lot - you'll notice that the average health began increasing shortly after your gatherer and hunter got to work. It's for that reason that I save farming for the mid-game. I find it much easier and more reliable to stick with hunters and gatherers for food in the early game, since they give you good food variety, and there's still plenty of wilderness around for them to operate effectively, and compared to crops, they're less vulnerable to meteorological whims. The only issue is that they're inefficient in terms of the amount of land they need relative to the total volume of food they can supply, and the larger your population, the less effective they are. You can think of them as following the square-cube law. Assume your city is square in shape - the area of the square represents your population, and the perimeter of the square is the space that can be used by gatherers to forage food. As the city grows, its area expands according to the square of the perimeter - in other words, the forageable area around your settlement increases much slower than your population does. The flipside of this is that, when the circle is very small like in the early game, foraging is actually more efficient than farming and you can get the same food for fewer workers. The same applies for hunters. Only once my city begins to expand, and I start needing a much larger total food volume with less wilderness to provide it, then I begin to use farms - and by that time I've usually got a few more seeds from traders, so I don't suffer a loss of variety.

IIRC, snow is just graphical, it doesn't have a specific effect. Actual temperature and time of year has an effect but just seeing snow or rain doesn't. Since you don't assign a specific citizen to a specific job, the game assigns a citizen to the jobs you indicate need to be filled. Same with assigning housing. You just build the house and people will move in someplace that ends up being closest to where they work (and I think also close to supplies they need.) The game will do a certain amount of optimizing of what jobs people do and where they live based on their job, so that can change. Also, citizens who are not currently needed to do their job - including, say, a hunter who doesn't yet have a fully constructed hunting lodge to work out of - will act as ordinary laborers until their actual job requires them. That means they'll be seen wandering off to gather trees, iron and stone that have been marked for removal, shlepping food from a producer to storage, or storage to market, and moving materials to construction sites. Early on you see that a lot with tailors who don't have a supply of hides to make clothing with, or woodcutters who have reached the set limit.

Herbalist should not be built close to forester (i.e. in its radius) as herbs grow only in old forests. Sure, you'll still get some herbs this way, but you can get so much more by building herbalist our of forester radius.

  • @marcuslinton310

    @marcuslinton310

Herbs grow among all the trees, doesn't have to be old forests, just older trees which will happen once the planting cycle gets established. Basically, you'll get plenty of herbs no matter where you place the herbalist as long as there are trees.

So if you place them near a Forester, the medicinal herbs Will dissapear and the herbalists production goes to 0. Might me also the Case for gatherers, but don't pin me on that. I believe it is even in de description of the herbalists.

its either your families dont make new children over your first five families, so you die out quickly, health is more to do with food, 100 units feeds one person less for child, 1 protein (meat/fish/eggs, nuts) 1 veggie (crops an berries) 1 fruit (orchards) and 1 grain (corn or wheat) = 5 hearts herbs and doctors are for plagues witch are brought by outsiders lol. that said when low health/happiness/staving people will eat herbs i believe

It is on! :( The screen tearing is WAY worse without it. Looking around for some fixes, but think it may be my recording software rather than the game.
