In the dvd commentary, they said that the land of the living was greyish to show that people of that era were repressed by social norms that made their lives dull and lackluster and death set them free to be in a more joyful and colorful place. It’s an okay movie but not a masterpiece

She turns into the butterflies at the end as a metaphor, just like Victor set the butterfly free that was trapped at the beginning, as too did he set Emily free. She was trapped down below because she had never gotten over her death and was so fixated on love, something she didn't have. So when she killed the villain at the end she finally let go of her death and through Victor she found true love, her one goal in life. He set her free and with that she was free to move on.

I think that all the Underworld inhabitants have unfinished business, they're just kinda resigned to it. Emily is probably the first to truly move on in a very long time because she got her revenge on the one that killed her and knew that Victor did love her, in a way, to the point where he would sacrifice himself for her, no strings attached.

The counterpoint to that is, in a 'cleaner' version of the script, we would have seen someone else dissolve beforehand, to establish that the dead dissolve when they're ready to move on/complete their final business and/or we'd have another appearance of butterflies relating to freedom. (Since technically it's not a true "metaphor", but a symbolic call-back: A metaphor would have us see her dissolution, and then cut back to her now life-less corpse on the ground, so that we'd understand that she didn't really dissolve, but that her spirit ascended. The movie treats her physical dissolution as genuine.) It's a very nit-picky argument, of course, which is kind of what they do here.

The wedding cake is small because Victoria's family had little money.

Actually, I think you missed the biggest sin of all - how does no one in the town recognize Barkis? Emily's story is that he wooed her and she met him at night by the graveyard, which is where he evidently not only killed her but left her remains. This implies that Emily either lived in the same town as Victor and Victoria, or she lived in the town over, since she had to be able to walk to that spot at night in a short span of time. Add to that that Barkis isn't that old, and we can only gather that Emily "disappeared" a few years ago at best. The skeletons sing that she was a beauty known for miles around and that her family was evidently well off, meaning that people would have noticed her absence, even if her parents moved away. They would have known her or known of her - so they would have known this guy was trying to court her at some point and that her father had thought he'd put a stop to it. So, I repeat - how does no one in the town recognize Barkis?

Agreed. Plus it doesn’t help that during the skeleton’s song, you SEE Barkis’s shadow, which Victor could have possibly recognized(as most of the older audience should have, ruining that twist). And whatever happened to Emily’s parents? That’s not explained either.

Theory: Emily stole 'the family jewels and a satchel of gold', maybe it was more than she realized, like she stole most of the family fortune, her parents had to downsize and it would have been embarrassing to stay in town so they moved away. The townspeople don't recognize her because she is a corpse and rotting and also blue skin/hair. Extreme weight loss? Her spider friends could fix her gown so maybe?

But a sudden elopement like that would have still caused scandal and there's no way that no one would remember it or Barkis.

@@jessbeingme8155 It's not that the townspeople don't recognize Emily. That makes sense because, yes, she is a corpse. But how would no one recognize Barkis? He would have been around town, hitting on a girl known "for miles around" and suddenly disappearing when she did. They would probably assume the two eloped, but they would still recognize him and ask what happened to Emily. The movie could have fixed this by having someone ask him what happened to his wife and have him respond he was sadly widowed - something very common at the time.

I think there should have been a sin off for the part where the dead come to the world of the living and everyone is terrified but then the little boy recognizes his grandpa and everyone stops panicking and reunites with their loves ones. I love that scene.

I saw this movie at my friend's Halloween party in high school, a few months after my mom passed away. I had to struggle to not cry when I saw that scene.

Theory on the whole “why are some people skeletons and some of them just blue” time. Corpse wither away and the longer they have been dead the longer the more skeleton they are. That why dude in charge of the mum and dads carriage is just blue with no bones showing or nothing. He is freshly dead so nothing has started to rot away. We do hear them talk about Emily to lord what’s his name and he says how she died. Since he is older than Emily by appearances we can tell it’s been awhile since she died giving her time to start to rot just not all the way. Anyways that’s my whole theory.

The point of the Corpse Bride's story and why she turns into butterflies at the end is she thought in order to get closure she needed to still get married but when she realized that the man who caused her death was alive she realized that her only way to get closure was to find a way to move past her attachment to getting married, or at least that's how I always viewed it as someone who's favorite character in the movie has always been the bride herself

The "underworld" is purgatory for corpses of those with unfinished business. She dissolved into butterflies because her business had finally been finished.

I actually love the skeletons dancing sequence, especially when you consider that it's like 95% traditional stop motion. I was lucky enough to meet the man who owns the company that makes the puppets and see how intricate they are. That sequence alone represents months of hard work, careful planning and flawless execution.

I hated Barkis because he was a bully and a bluebeard! He married and murdered Emily for her dowry. And he was planning to do the same thing with Victoria! I was glad that he drank the poison because once he died the other dead were free to give him his repercussion.

Personally I think this movie is way too underrated. Its one of my favorite Tim Burton movies and I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves.

13:35 It was mentioned on the song that talks about her life story. She was manipulated and murdered to take her family's riches for a person whom she thought loved her. She is a naive girl that died wanting to be loved, so for her being able to go on with her undead life she waited under the tree where she was presumed unprofessionally buried (pretty common in old times) and hope to find someone that truly loves her. Then Victor came, and she now realizes that what she wanted is taking someone's happiness away. So, she gives up that dream, made the right decision, and pass on for she no longer feels bound to be in the land of the living anymore. The story is all about her, not Victor. As for the motive of Victor, both Victoria and Victor's family have arranged a marriage to save them from the poor. Neither Victor nor Victoria have ever seen each other and are unsure if they'll even like each other. At the moment of the piano scene, they start bonding and see hopes that this marriage their parents made for them can work. Victor fucks up the rehearsal; he goes for a walk to clear his mind and perfect his vow because he really wants Victoria to be his wife. Then Emily comes mistaking that vow was meant for her. His life was taken for a spin, and although this woman was very enthusiastic in being with him... she's dead, and Victor tried playing with this fake marriage for a way to get back upstairs so he can tell Victoria all about this bizarre news. It backfired and Victor has to spill out the news to Emily that they can never be all because of one physical flaw. This hits her (emotionally) like a truck, and no matter how much a wonderful and talented person she can be, the marriage she wanted to have can never work. Victor then came to apologize to her because even if she is dead she still has feelings, and this guilt trips him into devoting his life to her because now he feels like it's a responsibility to make her happy more than it being genuine love. None of the two see that until Emily sees the errors of her goal. The three main characters' lives are driven by love and it's Emily who is the one to grow the most in the end of the story.

Emily was free because she got her happy ending and completed her unfinished business. In the song “at the end of the day” the lyrics said: “She made a vow lying under that tree that she’d wait for her true love to come set her free.” Victor was willing to die for her and proved what love really was to Emily. She completed her unfinished business and was able to move into the afterlife.

"Elegant, cultured, radiant. Victoria has found a husband with all these qualities and more." I'll take things never said at a Kardashian wedding ever for $400 Alex.

This film legit changed my life. It started a crazy series of events that led me to where I am now, and I'm not ashamed to admit it's become my favorite movie.

The Corpse Bride is a horror love story movie that has many metaphors about love and death. It was a sweet yet scary movie that I enjoyed as a little girl. The best part was near the end where Emily finally gets the love she always wanted. I think this was more of a relatable movie, just without the murders. Anyways, thanks CinCast.

You know I've never realized until now how many Tim Burton movies Johnny and Helena starred in. Tim Burton movies and Johnny & Helena, they go hand in hand. This one, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory are my favorites from him. I actually liked his take on Wonka more than the Gene Wilder version (unpopular, I know), the music gets me every time

Actually, the opinion of the daughter did have some sway in the decision. From peasants to nobility, the daughter could reject someone and while she did not have the final choice, people realized that an unhappy arrangement will not to a happy alliance.

It's like in Downton Abbey. When they lose their money are realize they might be forced to sell the estate and lay off the staff; they make it clear this would be unbelievably humiliating and demoralizing. The whole justification for these huge manor houses was providing employment and economic flourishing to the surrounding community. Being forced to admit that you were broke (but still in possession of a noble title) even if it was in the sense of "sell your huge manor house and move into a smaller mansion with a smaller staff" was emasculating to the extreme. It's all a pride thing.

my theory on how victor set emily free, he made her realise that her time as a bride past. that by marrying victor she too was taking his life away. also by helping kill the man who did kill her. her unfinished business was done. allowing her spirit to move on. i felt that all the dead people down there were in a purgatory/limbo state. either refusing to move on completely or having some unfinished business, hence why we never saw emily's parents. they moved onto heaven so when emily let go of her past she could go to heaven. that was my theory anyways.

I think it's funny that one of the first things said was "Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, together in a film directed by Time Burton Clique" Only because it was stated during the press conferences for this movie that Helena and Johnny met for the first time on that set. While they did also work on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory during the time this movie took as I believe it was released in late 2005. It was weird because I didn't even think about what it was like for them to meet since they seem to have been working together forever. Also please do a Cimemasin on Sweeney Todd (2007) It's one of my Tim Burton favs!!!

Emily telling victor that 'he set her free' and then turning into butterflies actually makes sense. I think the world in which they were in was just full of corpses with unfinished business. Emily's killer died and she finally found peace, therefore turning into butterflies

He forgot that Victor clearly placed the ring on Emily's index finger, but when she reanimates, it's on her third finger.

This movie is honestly really good. It has the same tone as Beetlejuice, and the same look as Nightmare. I love it

idk Barkis showed that he was a boaster when he hijacked Victor's wedding and made the reception toast all about how much of a better fit for a husband he was. For being defeated, the fact that he wanted to leave with a last jab isn't out of place. Most likely thought the wine was for the ceremony (drink of one cup that some people do). He didn't want to leave like he had his tail between his legs.

I'm shook that Cinema sins didn't add the adult joke when Victor was practicing his vows. He once said "with this cup I'll--oh goodness no"

You missed a sin on Victoria wearing a corset directly against her skin and Victor placing the wedding ring on Emily's index finger, only for it to appear on her ring finger as soon as she's reanimated. Also, cousins married cousins back at that time - it wouldn't have mattered if Barkis was a relative as long as he wasn't her sibling, her father or her uncle. Also also, yes. A LOT of people were classically trained pianists. You had to be able to entertain your guests, so - play for them! Bonus sin you missed - when does this movie take place????? Some of the costumes are Victorian, but the little dead kids are wearing Edwardian era clothes?? The fashion in this movie is all over the place.

At the time it was believed that only sibling-sibling marriages was incest. Marrying cousins was common, especially among nobility/royalty because it was believed to keep the line "pure". Or in the case of royalty, it kept power within the family and strengthened their bloodline

Yes, the thing about the piano goes back to #24. 2:02 Ok, it was uncommon but still possible for someone in Victoria's position not to know how to how to play an instrument, but it would indeed be strange for her parents to be adamantly against her playing on the grounds that it was 'improper.' I'd always figured that part was a subtle joke about how her mom's default setting is to hate everything.

Hello don’t mean to be “that guy” but the two skeletons are obviously playing a game of snooker not pool and that’s why there are so many red balls and a brown ball. So the pool table itself isn’t a lie your are Jeremy.

Watching this while I was very young had no clue to why she turned into butterflies at the end of the move...thought it was just a classic Burton thing to do, but clearly it’s a beautiful metaphor. Yes, By turning into butterflies, her soul is free and goes to heaven. She always dreamed of being a bride, and Victor gave her that experience, to walk down the isle and say their vows. But she learned that it was wrong to kill Victor, knowing she would be taking him away from Victoria. Learning that her life and chance of being married was taken away from her forever, she would have never dreamed to take someone else’s away. Therefor, to let Victor live, and for he and Victoria to be wed, Emily could then finally be able to Rest In Peace. I as well think if Emily and Victor did overall get married, Emily still would have found peace, because her dream of getting married was her unfinished business (ghost or not)

I'll be honest, there's a part of me that actually enjoys this movie a bit more than Nightmare Before Christmas 😅

When I watched Finding Nemo one gripe I had is re the sharks who want to be vegetarian, because sharks are carnivores and can't survive on a meat-free diet. Then I realised that sharks don't speak English either, so then I thought oh never mind.

The only problems with that movie I can think of are reeeeally nitpicky: 1. That bridge from the cavern to the city looks SUPER rickety, has NO railings and is over LAVA. Roarke is an IDIOT for letting everyone drive their trucks across it all at once. Sure, nothing bad happened then, but that was a REALLY reckless move. 2. Milo, a linguist, is unable to pronounce Kida's full name. Sure, some people can understand foreign languages they hear or read but can't speak it themselves, but Milo was able to speak Atlantean the moment he first met Kida and her people. Heck, even I can pronounce it: "Key-DAH-gah-kahsh". 3. When Milo talks with Kida near the lake(?) where they're about to go look at the mosaics, he plays with a few of the literal fireflies that were seen earlier burning the explorers' camp. He says "These guys are kinda cute when they're not, you know, formed into a fiery column of death." Nowhere in the fire scene were those insects ever organized enough to be called a column. Swarm, yes. Column, no. 4. Milo's glasses neither break nor even move out of position when he slams facefirst into the water. They still don't move the whole time he's under. As someone who wears glasses: HOW?!

Honestly I didn’t think Emily understood Scraps at all when she “talked” to him. It came off as her being playful and childish like she has evidently been the entire movie. It could also be because she’s a Disney Princess though, that’s definitely an option.

Also Victor puts the engagement ring on Emily's _pointer_ finger...but when she goes to find him and tells Victoria of their "engagement" it's on her ring finger. (DING!)
