Honestly, they COULD have made a tragic modern black beauty highlighting everything horses have to deal with in the modern world and stayed in theme with the original being essentially an expose on horse abuse, but they just HAD to make another horse girl movie...

THIS! The movie was so frustrating to watch for me because there were like... tiny hints of an original/properly modernized interpretation of Black Beauty's themes, but they just didn't go for it. You could have used this movie to address mustang management in the US, or you could have made it about the abuse happening in the competitive horse racing, jumping or dressage scene, you could have made Black Beauty into a police horse as Abigail suggests... and in every such circumstance, there would have been interesting topics to address with regards to horsemanship and correct treatment of animals, all without falling back onto the plough horse/carriage horse stuff which barely works for the modern setting, and all without the utterly cliché magical horse girl bond.

True, but every horse when bonding with people are different. Besides, there's SO many horse bonding movies/shows/books that has stuff tragic like stables on fire, or horses getting taken away from there owners. Like for example Heart land, Free Rien (Raven) and Spirit riding free. If all of them where the same then it won't be as interesting. If you really have watched or read spirit riding free, heart land, or Free Rien (Raven) you will notice that some sense or even half on the movie is the same. So conclusion that will make all the horses the same but just different colors and breeds.

This probably was before your time, but Disney pulled a similar dirty one with the movie adaptation of the "The Young Black Stallion". They turned it into a girl and horse story, when it was supposed to be a prologue to the Black Stallion series, and had nothing to do with a little girl or the "plot" they gave it for the movie. While it didnt have quite the literary importance of "Black Beauty", it was still pretty disgusting. What makes me sad is that "Black Beauty" was actually very important for animal welfare as a cultural revelation in English society. It is such a significant and beautiful, timeless story - and this is the introduction that kids are going to get to it. Its going to ruin "Black Beauty" for them by being a piece of garbage. I have a copy of the original unabridged version, beautifully bound, and I highly recommend it to anyone with interest in the story to read it as it was originally written.

The Black Beauty movie that I grew up with was the 1994 version. Although I’ve never read the books, I could tell you that movie was probably much more accurate than this one. Also I’m sick and tired of equestrian movies always being about some girl moving to the country and despite having no experience with horses, manages to tame the extremely wild horse that nobody else could.

I’ve been imagining a story where my main girl gets a thoroughbred jumping mare from someone who decides she’s too much to take care of, and she wants to take her to competition. BUT, instead of there being a big bad rival in the competition, her rival is the horse. Basically, she could be a really good jumping horse if she wasn’t such a hothead. The mare misbehaves much more than your average thoroughbred, so main character has to work with the worst problem horse known to man. Eventually they do meet eye to eye and manage to get along and get to compete with little problem. See my concept here? It’s sort of like a self discovery journey except with the assistance of a horse. It shows that you can do more than you’d expect yourself to.

Make a horse movie where the main character is a young boy who's older sister is a horse rider, his mom and dad are horse riders, grandparents were horseriders, and he deeply wishes to be just like the rest of his family. He is not allowed to though, because he is disabled with his legs. He starts attending horse rehabilitations though (it is common nowadays for upper class families to rehabilitate through horses. And the main character comes from a rich family). He gets from a disabled boy with broken dreams to a horse racer. Realistic, motivational movie that no matter how difficult things are, there is always a way.

I feel like if they wanted to modernise Black Beauty they could have done something like having an OTTB (or STB if they wanted to include carriage related things and have it make sense) that finishes up on the track, is retrained as a riding horse and goes on to have various other careers of varying quality. That would be something that actually looks at the journey many modern horses go through in a way similar to the original that isn't just turning it into another "horse girl movie".

The book was written in 1877, why change it now?! Especially because the horses playing Black Beauty in this movie are ALL thoroughbreds of some kind, not mustangs in any way?!

Ah, I remember reading Black Beauty as a child and having my little mind blown by that story. I hadn't watched Spirit or many other horse focused stories yet, so this was the first story I read that was told from the animal's perspective. It really did make me cry at the end and actually got me into writing my own horse stories (of course, for a girl raised in a metro city in India, my story ideas were nonexistent). Ginger was my favorite character in that book and I just loved her so much. I loved that Joe in the book was a boy who made a mistake and ended up giving Beauty a fever. And that he grew up and learned at the end of the book when he reunited with Beauty. For me, the story really showed just how many people Beauty met, some good, some bad, yet always gave his very best because that's his character. Not gonna lie, even though I don't remember the entire story now (been over 15 years since I read the book), the impact the story has had on me has lasted till now and even into my irl interactions with horses. To see such an iconic character from my childhood turned into...this...is truly... unsettling. The movie was just out of place. It just felt like they grabbed things from popular horse media and shoved it into a single movie and slapped Black Beauty's name on it. The storyline was inconsistent and all over the place, and there was no real purpose in the end. I'd hate to think this is Black Beauty's legacy since I love that fictional horse so damn much. I'm quite unsettled by the current trend of making any horse related media essentially the same story.

I remember seeing this movie come out and was immediately turned off by the 'city girl meets horse' vibe which is so overused. 'A girl and her horse' movie wouldn't be bad at all if they had done it right, but 90% of the ones that exist are just garbage and it's such a shame that this movie actually had a decent cast with SO much potential. Plus it's just frustrating that she suddenly knows everything about horses after spending a few days with Black Beauty. Overall I wish they would've stuck with the original story line and made some improvements or touch ups (As if it needed it, tbh.) It's the same problem with the new 'Spirit'. Movies such as War Horse, Black Beauty(OG), Spirit: SOTC are WONDERFUL examples of a friendship between human and horse. That's another point I'd like to make.... there's not enough movies for kids that involve a young boy and his horse! We need more of it for sure. But even movies like Flicka(2006) are really good and involves a girl as the main character as well. It definitely can be done, but it wasn't done well here at all. My ranting aside, this was a wonderful video. Well said.

This is a good video. Black Beauty is one of my favourite books, so of course I'm a bit biased. When I first heard there were plans for a modern Black Beauty, I thought it was a good idea. The themes of the book are very relevant to everyone who wants to work with horses in my opinion, but the examples are a bit "outdated", so why not adapt the story in a way that people can learn something about how they should be treating horses today instead of how people should have done it 150 years ago. It's not like there's a shortage of things that still go wrong in stables, riding schools and of course the whole show jumping, dressage, racing etc industry. One thing that always captivated me with the book and that makes the story even more tragic is that Black Beauty is a horse born in a save haven, trained with love, strong, kind, trusting. Whatever could go wrong? His new owners of course want him to work, but they are good people and he enjoys the work. When they have to sell him, they do so thinking they have found good new owners for him. Black Beauty doesn't get fucked up by humans because of some mean plot or villain, but because those that are responsible for him, that should take care of him, don't care enough, don't have the means to do it right or just don't know better. That's something that should be possible to be translated into a modern era. Don't own a horse without informing yourself thoroughly about what it needs. Don't push a horse beyond it's limits for your own ambition or profit. Don't own a horse if you can only afford to have it stay inside a very small stable with one hour on the pasture once a day. The horse will endure, like Black Beauty, and may still be kind and obedient with you, but it needs more to be happy. The love of the horse girl will not be enough, no matter how romantic it might sound. Black Beauty isn't a wild horse that "magically" falls in love with a girl. Black Beauty is a horse with all the best starting conditions that should have ensured a happy and healthy life. Black Beauty could be your favourite horse at the local riding school, the one that's kind and calm and great with kids. I think it is an important part of the book that while Black Beauty is of course special for the reader, he is in fact one of so many carriage horses that were trotting down the street back then and that had to endure the same torment. It may not sound as flashy and romantic as "tamed mustang", but that's kind of the point for me, you don't just have to bemoan the bad conditions at racetracks and the starving mustangs that are losing their grazing lands (but of course those too! Definitely those too!). You need to look at what you are doing, and how, and ask yourself if you are doing it right. When I was a kid, I went to the riding school at my town and learned to ride. The horses lived in small-ish stalls with very little times at the pastures, doing multiple lessons a day, and showed Weaving. I loved all the horses and riding and enjoyed my time there, I thought it was all normal and just how it was supposed to be. When I got a bit older, I started questioning the way the horses were kept, and at other horse farms I saw horses being way more relaxed, mostly living in herds, having real social contact with other horses. That is something that every "horse girl" could do - look at how their horses live, and ask themselves if it is a good way or if it should be improved. And that are some parts that I think an "educational" Black Beauty movie could have shown: things that can cause the audience to try and be better themselves. Sorry about the rant. Back to the story. I recommend the 1994 Black Beauty movie, although the pacing is sometimes a bit weird, it captures the story nicely. On a final note, while Black Beauty is really close with some of his humans and gets found and saved by Joe, the final moments of the book and of the 1994 movie (that always have me in tears) are him dreaming that he was still back at Birtwick Park, dancing on the pastures with his friends Ginger and Merrylegs...

It would have been a really good movie if they stuck with the original storyline. To non-Equestrians too, because it’d just be more interesting and highlighting what bad things can truly happen. But, I could never imagine they’d ever make a tragic abuse movie or a movie that’s not- girl that’s never ridden + wild horse = Grand Prix Showjumper liberty Dressage bareback pro. Or perhaps at this point they could have gone for another storyline, like the police horse, or another horse rather than Black Beauty with Terry or another character on a rescue team.

I'm not sure how easy or safe it is to dye horse markings to make them all match, or if that would even have been in their budget anyway, but although I understand why there's that inconsistency (generally speaking horse movies have to have several horses that look similar, even if there's only one horse in the whole thing, for reasons like not overworking the horse, having stand-ins in case of illness, etc etc) it still bugs me, too.

This adaptation is not only a really poor adaptation, but also glosses over the orginal purpose of the book. The original book was intended for adults not children. It exposed the abuse and mistreatment of horses that was common back in the 19th century in a sometimes very gruesome way. It basically taught people that horses could feel pain and werent machines. It was like the Uncle Toms Cabin but for animals. This book had the biggest impact on not only for the welfare of horses but the welfare of most animals as well. The impact of this book is one of the greatest in history. It's just depressing to me that we went from a book that exposes animal abuse and promotes the proper treatments of animals to a movie that is just another horse girl movie that was clearly just made for money.

That would NOT happen in reality. People are really weird about death and the last thing a removal company would need is some family suing them cuz their kid saw the dead horse). I would LOVE to see a horse movie of a girl that grew up with horses and then had to move to the city at 13 and then moved back to the country at 19 and had to like re-learn riding and stuff and after she finally gets good at riding again, she gets in a riding accident and becomes paralysed in the lower half of her body and she’s just like so determined to ride and be with her horses that once she can move her legs enough to take a couple steps, she keeps getting onto her horses and no matter how many times she falls off she still continues to ride and eventually it strengthened her lower half so much she was actually able to ride and then she becomes like a really good rider again and competes in xc or sj competitions, basically it’s a nice heartfelt horse movie with a message to never give up, pick yourself back up no matter how many times you fall down, you never know what you can achieve if you don’t try🤷‍♀️

This movie is so confusing,, my brain cannot, it's like a fever dream to me. It's feels like a jumble of Spirit, Black Beauty and the Black stallion all in one mess of a plot and I can't unscramble them in my head fast enough. Like just looking at the movie in disney+ was like "okay so Joe Green like in the book but it's a girl, the horse is also a girl, the horse is a mustang like S:SC and we're focusing on her speed for some reason like in the black stallion?" AND THE HORSE IN THE MOVIE LOOKS LIKE THOROUGHBRED TO ME. Or at the very least, not a wHoLE LoT LiKE a mustang. The imagery and the character names are painful cause they just seem like a rip off of movies we already know. For example the scene on the beach at the beginning reminds me of many similar scenes from the Black Stallion. I haven't even watched it but I don't want to.

I don't think people that think Abigail is being a hater have understand her vision or many of us. The problem is not the movie itself, but the name it carries. Black Beauty (i only have seen the movie) was shocking, sad and realistic. It talked about how a true horse's life is, the exact way that the book was. It was amazing like that because the story was serious, have amazing characters that are great. Another exemples of how good realistic movies is Seabiscuit, Secretariant, War Horse... Specially this last one. This movie is only made for getting kids attention and just money. There is no love in this movie. You can have fun with it, but it is just cliche, cringy like many other movies. They could have put "Flika" or another movie horse Common names that will be the same. If they Really wanted to make a Black Beauty reboot, they could have worked more and make a nowdays version. We have literaly many themes that could have worked on.

All of Beauty's jobs could have been broken up into different horse movies. I've never seen the movies, but I've played some games based off of some German movies called Windstorm/Ostwind. Maybe you could review those?

Loved this! Would love it more if Disney made a horse story that was actually about horses. lol Would you be up to review Simon Wincer's "Flash," or Greg Beeman's "Horse Sense"?

Sorry but, not ever movie is the same as a book or what it is based off of. Your taking it a bit to seriously. I know the horse is named black beauty but they call her beauty for a nick name and your getting a bit crazy about it?

I love how "beauty" has painted on star and has no black sock on the back leg. Lol
