One time at band camp (as a 70+ year old), the music room that the Drumline used had typical raised floor levels. But this classroom had an entrance from the outside, as well as from an inside hallway. Since it was summer, the entrance used was from outside, so you came in at the highest level. It was the last day before the Sacramento Mandarins left for tour, so they had changed all the drum heads. I decided to grab one of the old drum heads to get it autographed by the drumline. It was my first time in the room, and I was carrying it in front of me. I entered the room, talking to the Tenor tech and the other tenors who were tuning the drums ... and suddenly the level floor "disappeared" and I fell! Crashed! Knees, Elbow rug burn! OUCH!!! It's probably been 50+ years since I had been in a music room so it didn't even occur to me that the floor was not level. Fortunately, my new titanium replacement knees absorbed all the impact. It could have been really bad, otherwise! Loopy Grandma definitely has a great story to tell! 💥🥁💥

One time in band camp, our freshman tenor player (he had practice in middle school so they made an exception) was walking back from our practice field. In front of our band room we have this little concrete wall architecture that was about 1’5” high. He got the great idea to jump over it. Now, granted, he had done this before and other people have to show that they think they did well at rehearsal (he did do pretty well tbh). But this time he tripped over the concrete wall and fell on the tenor drum that while he was falling went into playing position. He fell on the tenor completely parallel to the ground. We all heard a crack and all of percussion gasped. They all were saying “is the drum okay??”. It turned out it was just a fractured bone 🥰. *before anyone asks he was in a sling for his arm but it did heal fully about halfway through the season. No one ever stoped doing the jump thing but they were definitely more careful from then on 💀.

Some schools do actually let their students write music for their band, as was the case for one of the other schools in my area. Granted, they're a performing arts-focused school, but they still let their students make the show.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I knew high school students who could have written music for field shows, but they also had been playing music from a very young age, were studying composition, etc.

I think our band is an outlier because we don't do competitions and we perform four shows throughout the football season. during Bandcamp we at least have one to two team building activities each day of band camp (they are relay silly). I don't have a bedtime story but during an actual performance the director told us to run onto the field from different sides of the field, she also said be silly. me and my friend decided to run up to each other and look around each other a couple times and then run to our spot. the problem with the plan was that we are both snare drummers so when we tried to maneuver we both fell over because we ran into each other. that was bad enough but I found out the pegs for my snare drum became misaligned after the accident so I had to do the entire performance with one hand while holding my snare drum in place with the other hand. a few days later my friend told me that this performance was also on TV.

I wrote the show for my school for my senior year. The director bought a show and it came it messed up. It was way to complicated and was written for different instrumentation than we had and there was zero drill. After camp started, he waited a week for the company to fix it as they had promised and we couldn't wait any longer. He asked if I thought I could write a different show that he had always wanted to do and I said yes. I stayed up 3 days straight writing the entire show including the drill and we marched that show. And won a lot. So yes, a student can write the show and it work. The director knew I could do it and knew I'd work to make it as amazing as I possibly could and he let me do it.

I've never watched this movie, but from the clips you used in this video, it looks more like the individual camps I and my friends have been to for e.g. drum major/leadership, musical performance (like Interlochen, Blue Lake or a concert band camp hosted by a university music program), etc. Since those were sleep-away and not about getting a field production ready to perform without breaking UIL rules, they had some time for socializing, games, etc. and while they didn't end with a full band marching contest, drum major camp did end with a drill down. We had a bit of this in my marching band camps (weekly spirit days that were a contest between sections) but when you have three four hour rehearsal blocks there's not much time left for flag football or whatever.

Well, my band had a once in a lifetime experience. We had no director during band camp, so leadership ran the program for 3 weeks. And then our director had no experience with American marching band, so leadership continued to run the program and we ended up placing 7th in the state of AZ overall in our division.

@Altoclarinets that's a good question, I can assume it would say more about each student overall since it could have taken just a few people causing problems to end our marching band program early or turn it into a disaster at any point. As far as this saying something about bands in AZ, this literally never happens, normally we probably wouldn't have had a marching season this year, so hopefully this situation says something positive.

I've also been to a lot of band camps. I came from a very small high school, so the band camps I went to were different - more college-oriented I guess. They were always held at the colleges, put on by the college staff, and you would even stay in the dorms. I went to some that were orchestra band camps (you felt spoiled at these ones because it's indoors!) and I went to marching band camps. These band camps had students from all over the state, it wasn't just one school attending. These band camps were expensive, but they did offer scholarships to attend. That's how I got to go. Most of the time it's group rehearsal, sectionals, one-on-ones, and back to group rehearsal, very little 'play' time. They would have either 1 day or night set for 1 fun event, but we never really played sports or held competitions. One time we did get to go white water rafting. That was a blast. As in terms of staffing, you're right, there wasn't really a moment you weren't supervised. Band camps were great, nothing like the movie.

4:46 funny story, at my school i'm friends with the bass 4 who's a sophomore and he says that he's going to try out for bass drum section leader once the current one leaves (3 of the bass drums including current section leader are juniors) he's going to try out by rewriting all of the bass drum stand tunes because they are currently pretty off from what's supposed to be played, and the footage of oak mountain playing jig 2 is funny because I'm in oak mountain's marching band

The 2000s was all about vicarious embarrassment (the Germans call it Fremdscham). So many movies were about putting the protagonists in super embarrassing situations and barely overcoming them. I remember struggling through Meet the Parents because I felt so sorry for Greg. In a way, it was more British style humor. Stephen Fry said it best: Imagine the scene in Animal House where John Belushi smashes a guitar over a guy’s head. In Britain, the protagonist would be the guy getting smashed.

OK, so my freshman year in high school, I was placed on triangle... The Jr high band director caught me talking shit on my way out, told the high school band director, and he proceeded to make my 3 years there absolute garbage. I actually compare him to JK Simmons' character in Whiplash, because he would actually yell at us about folders and throw things at us such as chairs and boxes of music. He later died of cancer... Poetic justice. Anyway, what you say about triangle going into front ensemble (we called it the pit) was exactly what happened to me. The first few weeks for band camp, I was marching with the rest of the section, but I later found myself awkwardly standing on the sidelines next to the bell players. That was our "pit.." I hope my "Fletcher" felt vindicated, or even somewhat justified in his creative decisions. Maybe if someone else were director, the band might have seen more funding...? OK, maybe not, but it's relatively possible.
