And as a New Yorker (one from Queens, actually!) I feel as if they barely focus on here. I love this movie a lot because I recognize so many of the places even if I wasn’t alive around the time this movie came out. I always feel like California gets all of the credit when it comes to films.

I also think the part where Akeem tells the girls about his date with Lisa is one of the best. It's so sweet and innocent and their reactions were so cute. Those girls are probably 39 or 40 today.

The McDowell's restaurant was actually a Wendy's in real life (sadly, it's no longer there).

Every single performance in this movie- right down to the the two little girls on the steps and the barber that says “that boy is good!”- should merit a sin off. Say what you want about the story, but the performances are what make this movie an absolute gem

It showed Mortimer looking right at him as Akeem giving him the money so you literally answered your own sin!

Has anyone else noticed that James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair play a King and Queen in this movie, and also play a King and Queen in “The Lion King” ? I bet some Disney Studio Executive saw this film and said “ I think we just found our Mufasa and Sarabi”. And honestly, they could not have picked anyone better to portray an iconic King and Queen in either movie.

I’m one of a few people who found about the original film from the announcement of the sequel. After seeing how beloved it was, I decided to check it out myself on Netflix. And I definitely enjoyed it. There’s a charm to it that many romantic comedies nowadays seem to lack, and the stellar performances from everyone, especially Murphy, brings the movie together.

Re: him not marrying his original bride - I believe the sequel will address this by adding Wesley Snipes as the enemy General that's related to the intended bride or something like that

Having worked in a supermarket ("Purity Supreme," ironically -- in Weymouth MA in the 80s), I can testify that being given a mop bucket filled with extremely dirty water for cleaning purposes is ABSOLUTELY realistic.

I kept expecting at some point (audio outtakes) James Earl Jones to say, "I am altering the deal; pray I don't alter it any further..." 😉

Love this movie. Yes, it has it's flaws, but it is packed with great quotes. "Prince Akeem: Behold, Semmi. Life. Real life! A thing that we have been denied for far too long! (shouts from balcony) Good morning, my neighbors!! Neighbor: Hey, f*ck you! Prince Akeem: (very excited and happy) Yes, yes. F*ck you too!"

No matter the flaws, I will forever love this movie.

"I have a date with LISA!" - the fact that he's not only speaking about this to strangers in Queens but that they're kids too makes it a double that they do in fact _not_ give two shits about his date with Lisa, hence why it is so damn funny.

Ya know, I kinda feel like since he is talking to kids, they actually do listen and care. Their hearts are gold, they might not know what hes talking about but I think that his happiness made them happy. Which is why I think they cared.

I agree some of these sins were just from either jokes he didn’t understand like the LA and New York one or just nit picking like the hamburger buns. Only thing i see wrong with this movie is the ending made no sense.

The Vanilla Ice reference over MacDowell's was beyond priceless.

You completely forgot that strange gaze Cleo and Queen Aoleon exchanged in the last scene.

Cinemasins seems to have missed the fact that the whole LA/New York binary choice is the joke. Doesn't deserve a sin!

@Brian Cairns Also read the joke as a sarcastic quip about how he didn't help the driver at all with his answer. Like a "oh yeah, sure, take me to the TALL man, because there's so few of those around" kind of thing.

Lmbo so needed I never notice some things yet still my all time favorite.

I just saw this movie for the first time a few days ago and I loved it! My favorite part is when he shouts “good morning neighbors” from his balcony and someone yells “f**k you!” and he replies “yes! f**k you too!” lol

You will have fun with part 2 can't wait to see

Lisas major denial of akeem was what his dad said to her i believe. When akeems mom brought it up, i think his dad contacted lisa again and told her everything and i think he gave her his permission for them to wed and probably apologized the best he could. In the end he wanted his sons true happiness after all.

I'd forgotten how much I loved this movie as a kid. They just don't make them like this any more. Fingers crossed for Coming 2 America, I guess? I always wondered why Arsenio Hall was never in more stuff, he was great in this - I did just find out he voiced Winston in the real ghostbusters cartoon though. Wait...what was I talking about?

I think it has to do with the fact that there's a limited amount of time and space in Hollywood movies for black comedians/actors. Also, in "Coming to America" it is clear why Eddy Murphy was the top dog so I don't think there were many investors eager to invest in Hall as a main star in their movie. Also, Eddy Murphy's own brother, the late Charlie Murphy, had his own style of humor, as shown in the Dave Chapelle skits. Yet I never heard of him untill I found the RICK JAMES skits on the internet.

@@AudieHolland It might have had more to do with the fact that he had a very popular talk show that ran for 6 seasons shortly after this film was released. After that, he continued to work in television, hosting and guest-starring all over the dial. He also did quite a bit of charity work. He was busy, well-paid, and raising his son. He didn't need to star in movies. He's worth at least $16 million. I think he'll be okay.

The LA or New York line @3:45 is a joke about nearly all Hollywood movies being set in one or the other. Sin rescinded!
