Everything we love about the UDO Super Gemini... And one thing we don't

Ғылым және технология

The Super Gemini synth from UK brand UDO is an absolute beast. With a blend of analogue and digital components, a dual-layer, bi-timbral sound engine, expressive touch strip, and much more, this might be the closest we'll get to a CS-80 reimagined for the modern age. In this video, MusicRadar's Si Arblaster explains why the Gemini might be his favourite synth of recent times.

Just got mine last week! For those trying to compare this to the Polybrute 12 - this is a completely different beast. It can do stereo magic the Polybrute (nor any other synth) cannot. It sounds absolutely massive, beyond anything in or out of the box. It’s rich, expressive, immediate. It feels alive in a way no other synth I own, excepting maybe my Modal 008, does. To those claiming it’s “too expensive”, I’ll simply state what Ty Unwin said about the Moog One. This is a professional’s instrument - it is not meant for everyone nor to be accessible to everyone. There is a premium to professional goods. If this isn’t worth it to you then move along and let the rest of us enjoy it and make music. You do not have a god-given right to own a synth.

It's not just about features, it's about playability, the tactile experience and workflow. It's like asking "what's the point of playing violin if there's quality sounding violin sampled and physically modeled instruments?" If your main goal is just to get the sound down in a track, then Softsynths and sample based instruments are just fine. And it's easily argued that synths like Pigments, Falcon, VPS Avenger 2 and other mega Softsynths can do WAY more than almost any hardware synth. But for actual keyboard players, they want to dig their hands deep in those keys and turn rotary knobs that aren't midi CCd the a virtual controller..also, the work flow can be way faster on a hardware synth in many aspects. Unless you took the time to map out several midi controllers to all your various Softsynths, you inevitably have to turn rotary knobs and and menu dive with your mouse. This might visually seem easier, but it's proven to be more time consuming once you have a handle on specific synths. Lastly, most modern hardware synths serve as high end midi keyboard controllers. The Hydra Synth and Polybrute are fine examples. Of course, if we're talking costs...then yeah, then it gets insane on the hardware synth. Plus, as stated they couldn't do stuff like weirdo plugins from Sugarbytes and the likes
