I have 30+ watches. I get tired of always setting my automatics. Yesterday I opened my watch box, and my couple of quartz watches were at the correct time to the minutes. So I popped on one of my quartz divers (which I never consistently wore before) and I'm kinda liking the no maintenance aspect of it....

I own a Citizen Quartz that the Wife gifted me on our wedding day in 1980. I can't remember the last time I replaced the battery, but this little Dynamo is crazy accurate & is like the Energizer Bunny...just keeps on going & going.

Damn mechanical lights, always running out if you don’t wear them. Should have had a quartz lamp.

All the Casio Edifce, including the glorious EFV-110D, that I've seen hit the marks perfectly and they don't cost an arm and a leg. Just something to consider

Agree, casio edifice is the most underrated brand in the underrated segment of cheap-good looking watches, I have seen practically no-one here on yt talking about those gorgeous 100$ +/- pieces (I own a beautiful panda chrono, the finishing is incredible and even the leather strap is pretty good)

I've got to disagree with most people on the "without a soul" opinion. You're literally oscillating a piece of earth with magic. Even though I have mostly mechanical watches. As an engineer, I love the mechanics. I have some old King Seiko Twin Quartz that blow my 4R movements out of the water. I love how thin they are too. My biggest problem with quartz is the battery itself. Not a fan of acid batteries. Bad for everyone.

Bought a few automatics over the past couple of years. Recently I bought a Bulova Lunar-Pilot quartz. Then I remembered why I had quartz watches before the automatics...they keep proper time...like a proper watch should. It's...really nice.

Souls of quartz watches are angry, and switching your lights off.

I recently (yesterday) got a bulova lunar pilot, this thing has quickly become my favourite. It may not have a soul, but I sold my soul to satan for a taco so I have no soul either.

Quartz are awesome, I've been beating my quartz day-date for last 12 years. Still working fine with +-15sec accuracy. It is light, compact, thin, reliable & affordable.

What watch do you have?

Not sure I’d ever spend that kind of cash on a GS quartz watch, but I love how they basically say - we’re going to do this the best it’s ever been done...and then execute on that idea.

I love my Citizen Promaster, and the seconds had is perfectly alined. 30% of my collection are quartz. Some days you just need to pick a watch and go, without having to set it.

I used to scoff at quartz watches but I have great respect for Seiko's Quartz movements now, so much so I own a 50th anniversary model with a sapphire caseback. I'm hunting for an Oysterquartz now!

Be careful with those. oysterquartz are super good watches except for a particular part. I was talking about it recently with my watchmaker. everything is indestructible except for, i think, the regulator. And it is hard and expensive to get. So inform yourself and thats it

About the servicing thing - you correctly pointed out that most quartz movements are not serviceable, and that often the only option is to replace the whole movement. That is true, but let's be honest, most of the 'workhorse' automatic movements such as the Seiko NH35a are not really considered serviceable either - it is standard practice to replace these lower-end movements rather than service them.

I had a citizen eco drive diver bn0000-04h that was insanely accurate and my daily beater above and below the waterline for close to 10years. It is currently retired and awaiting a refurb. I still love an automatic, but for time keeping accuracy you cant go past a watch that proved to be accurate to +/- 5 seconds a year. Automatics are for show. Quartz is for a pro. Even if as you say they have no soul. I believe if it survives 10 years on your wrist and performs admirably it may just have absorbed part of the wearers aura and deserves to be recognized. Fyi I'm no hippie just couldn't think of a more apt word than aura.

I've been wairing a Tissot pr50 quartz during 25 years. Still works perfectly, just need to change the battery every 5 years. Only recently I've bought automatic watches to change a little bit for fun. Right now my most precise watch is a citizen ecodrive diver, insanely precise.

Everything mentioned applies to both categories of watches. Watches don't have souls except to the philosopher. They tell time. If you appreciate mechanical watches buy them. However, finding a competent watchmaker is also a fine art. For some reason, every collector group develops its prejudices. We must all need some way to measure ourselves against others. There are mechanical watches that aren't worth the powder to blow them to hades.

Second hands dont match up with indexes. Cheap Casio: hold my beer.

i have a couple of 15-ish year old Casio's bought for 20-30 Euros; I rarely wear them for a long time now, but they have pretty much been running continuously since I got them - they still keep perfect time, they're maybe 10 seconds or something like that off in a year. Never been serviced, just changed the batteries a few times.

@Better Mouztrap an entirely subjective opinion, the quartz watch is better engineered because it is better at doing the job it was designed to do.

Casio Oceanus is my favorite quartz watch. Bunch of technology packed into one watch and it's beautiful

I have two Bulova watches that hit the marks perfectly, and I love them both. They also have incredible finishing as well as style. What more do you need to have heart?

I have a quartz watch, the Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz with the ETA F.06.111. I bought the Quartz one because I wanted it to be more robust and that I don't have to worry about it while working. I know I could have got the G-SHOCK, but I like the look. So Quartz also has some pro's ;) (But they still haven't the feeling of an automatic or mechanical movement) Great Video!

The accuracy of my eco drive is incredible but I enjoy the tinkering that goes with an automatic. It's like loading a flintlock vs a more modern firearm. I can understand how that's not for everyone, if I am in a rush the eco drive wins, but I generally try to live a less hurried existence. I like to set the auto a little fast, get there a little early, and chill....

Timex watches at a low price point usually match up with indexes

Both my Casio quartz watches hit the indices perfectly all the way around , the Duro £60 and the MRW200 £15 , if Casio can manage it on a £15 watch , I can't see any reason for larger watch companies not to be able to follow suit. What's your opinion on mechaQuartz?

The Casio mrw-200 is probably the best value watch in the world. Out of all my watches, which includes some quite expensive models, this $15 Casio is the unbelievably the most accurate. It’s Miyata quartz movement and Sony battery lose literally just one to two seconds a month. And the second hand hits the mark every single second!

The difference is that quartz 8,000 beats per second (aka, the normal quartz) moves dash by dash on the dial. Whereas automatic and highend quartz have a sweeping movement.

@@j.lizbardo not all of them... Citizen has record braking quartz that looses 1 s per year and it ticks, Rolex quartz too... As mid tear Ronda and ETA quartz does too

I LOVE my timex expedition with the diver bezel. 100m water resistance and dead on accuracy. Not to mention that sweet indiglo dial. Its my go to everyday watch.

I have one automatic. Im starting to collect more casio watches. I like more functions on digital watch. Alarms as well, very useful for work. I get reminded all the time.

Not being a collector but looking for functionality and usability for everyday use, its easy to appriciate Quartz. Precise, low maintainence, reliable and less costly. May I add that they often are thinner than mechanical Watches?

I like the accuracy and durability of a good quartz watch. Good-looking beater that I don't have to worry about.

I am 50+yo and still have the $12 Timex quartz that I got in high school. Still runs and is in my watch case to go fishing with me, still suits that purpose well. No, it does not have a soul like the rest of my collection mostly due to that little piece of mineral it uses to cheat to tell time! lol!

I really enjoy my Solar / Quartz section of my watch collection exclusively Seiko and Citizen ....all mine hit the minute marks straight on..!!. I store them in a glass top watch box where they are always being powered and ready to go. Love all my automatic / mechanical watches Too ...but yes you are correct to point out the superior accuracy of quartz / solar watches over mechanical. I only have a couple of battery powered quartz watches but won't any more as I hate replacing batteries and you really never know when the battery is ready to die. I have found that if the watch "Speaks to You" it has a Soul regardless of how it is powered.

Generally - Swiss quartz: ‘index marks, what’re they?’ (😂). Japanese: every mark, every time. IME of course...

That thing about dials not hitting the indices, I thought I ws the only one. One of the reasons why I love my Casio AQ-S810w is the fact that it has no second hand and the minute hand ticks three times between the seconds. Hits the indices perfectly and it's been 4 years since I recalibrated them. And yes, there is a function in the watch to calibrate the hands. Good episode. Stay safe!

Seiko's 9F quartz is nearly as marvelous a piece of engineering as the Spring Drive. If I were in the market for a GS would I pick it over the SD or the HiBeat 9S? Not likely. But it's still, without question, a killer unit.

@@rajgill7576 Its one of the only Quartz movements build the same was as a mechanical. High torque, high finishing, hand assembled, can be regulated and serviced. Oh, and Grand Seiko says they can go 50 years without servicing the movement... It has a anti black lash system for the seconds hand, so it's very satisfying to look at. Source... I own one.

Another GS 9F owner here (SBGN005 GMT). Incredibly reliable, great finish and agree re no need for servicing for a long time, if ever, save for battery change ~3 years. Highly recommend. ⌚🇯🇵

Jonathan Stoddard Not as good as a Citizen quartz eco drive which has solar, so a 15-20 year battery change not 3. Citizen also produce the worlds most accurate watch - 0100. And in my experience, citizen quartz hit the markers bang on, they just aren’t overpriced (aside from 0100) like the 9F Seikos.

mky hou You’re missing the point. While an EcoDrive capacitor may last 20 years, they’re still disposable, plastic movements (although very good for the price). A Grand Seiko 9F has a level of construction and refinement that you won’t find on those EcoDrive movements. High torque, anti backlash gears, metallic construction with a beautiful finish, vacuum sealed movement with lubricants specifically developed for that mechanism to allow for a 50 year service interval, termo compensation, etc etc...

Luís Cardoso yeah I’m missing the point because the citizen eco drive is basically as accurate (within a dozen seconds a year at most), hits every marker, costs next to nothing and is way more convenient. I get it Grand Seiko want to pretend it’s high horology quartz but at lest put some modern tech like solar on it if doing that, like Citizen did with the 0100.

I have tag heuer professional quartz watch it’s been running for 6 years

My first good watch was a Seiko tuna quartz watch given to me back in the 80's by my father and I just recently had it serviced by Seiko and I love it. I really beat the crap out of it and it never stopped working nor had any problem. It is not my beater any more after I serviced it and also since my father passed away.

Just a question, if the battery life in a solar quartz is not and issue could they make the second hand three or even 5 ticks per second? This would eliminate the missed indices issue and give the second hand a more mechanical sweep.

I usually wear a Timex Expedition for daily non-sports activities (then I wear a G-Shock), because honestly, a mechanical watch just cannot handle the beating I do daily - especially riding my old V2 motorcycle that rattles your bones, and yes, also your watch.

I thought the one to get Eco-Drive but has a battery and supposed to be very accurate I wonder if you could comment about that watch and it's time keeping ability if it's charged by the sun or light that charges the battery does it keep better time thank you

The Precidrive movements used n’y Certina, Tissot and others on the Swatchgroup are very accurate. The hands not matching the markers is mostly because they were not placed correctly. Every watchmaker can take them out and replace correctly matching the markers. Not a big deal but sad that many brands don’t really pay attention to that.

How exact is the day date function on your Seiko quartz tuna? Does day date advance at 12:00 am? If not how much off are they?Thanks.

Your Quartz Tuna is a fantastic piece. I’ve got a plastic Timex Camper (TW2R78000JP) - the seconds hand hits each of the indices. I love winding my Nomos Ludwig but G Shock Squares, a Marathon Navigator, and the little quartz field watch factor in heavy rotation.

I really like your videos, there honest and unbiased and great. I really liked this video about quartz watches because the often unjustly get neglected by watch collectors. I only saw you talk about g- shock and Seiko watches (2 great brands by the way) and was wondering what you think of other quartz brands (real watch brands, not fashion watch shit)? For example, what do you think of the Breitling Colt 44mm Thermocompensated and COSC certified quartz watches which have a daily variation in rate of within ±0.07 seconds and a battery life of +/- 8 years? Also I have another question, these Breitling B74 SuperQuartz movements have a gold plated printed circuit board (PCB). Does this have any practical use or is it just for show? Thanks in advance for answering my questions and keep up the good work.

I have been considering an Omega Seamaster Quartz which on the used market are $1,200 - $2K that are in really good shape. What do you think about the model?

I have a few quartz watches where the second hand matches up with the index marks until it hits a certain point around the face. So yes, I have the OCD to notice this, but good to know other people notice this too.

This stories about soul is just ridiculous to me. Most Casio and Seiko quartz watches hit second mark. Yet I saw expensive Certinas and Tissots that doesn't. Why Swiss don't learn from Japanese? I gave a chance to mechanical watches, but inaccuracie of them and, if you have few of them, constant adjustment of time and date, is a reason that I went back to Casio and Seiko. I am wearing Seiko SQ100 sports from 1978. Mint condition, great movement with 4 jewels, never serviced, hits second mark, and holds +15 sec/month. I hope that GS makes 40mm diver with 9F movement. That would be my grail.

I got a Casio Oceanus and I absolutely love it second hands hit the markers every time and if they get knocked of a little bit you can adjust them from a app I mean it’s not a cheap watch but I think it’s one of the most underrated one maybe bc it’s not available here. But I do agree with what you said and don’t understand it either.

It's just a bad explanation of something that makes sense. You can get a car for function, or you can get one entirely for the fun of driving it. It's because the choice isn't about function anymore. It's the same for watches. If all you want is the time and something that looks good the fuck would you do with an automatic or mechanical? But if you want a watch for something else, because you love the art of watchmaking for example, a quartz will be a boring accessory that's only about function.

I have 2 quartz watches in my collection set to the second of the world time click and use them to set my automatics against when I put them on. Pretty nice because they're always right!

Nice video, very entertaining, you have excellent editing skills! I have an extensive collection of watches, mostly mechanical, but also quartz, every Citizen Quartz Eco-Drive I have has the second's hand hit dead on the mark, the Seiko not so much. I have a couple of Quartz Chronometers, one a Breitling Chronograph the other a Certina, the Breitling hits dead on the Certina about 1/4 off the mark. The most accurate quartz watch I own is the Citizen satellite wave eco-drive, I could put this watch on a window sill and come back 10 years later and it would be telling the exact time, day, date to the very second. Hard to beat that! But since it has "No Soul" it rarely gets worn and is used mostly to set my mechanicals to. ;)

Question - has anyone owned an Omega X-33, either early 1st/2nd Gen or the later Skywalker? Lot of functionality, seem to be good pre-owned values out there. @Jory, might interesting to do a video on this watch and its history/evolution.

The mechanical that I received as a hand me down from my father has no power reserve so I have to constantly set the time when I wake up. It’s also a skeleton watch so it is hard to read sometimes.

My Grand Seiko Quartz Watch talks to me and have a soul. It tells me when we see other quartz watches we are better and we love each other dearly by soul.

What did you actually mean when you said "This movement lasts five to seven years", do you mean the battery, do you mean before it requires a service or do you mean before you have to through it in the bin because it's knackered?

I love my Grand Seiko SBGX, it is a fantastic watch. I like quarz watches too.

Bulova Lunar 256 movement, Citizen Eco-Drive Atomic or Radio timed, your feelings on those.

These watches are perfect if you repair televisions in the 80s or the only time you go out is for a weekly "gathering" at the comic book store. :)

Tbh the solar quartz watches I’ve seen like seiko and citizen hit their markers all the time. The seiko vh31 is basically a quartz that has a sweeping so does the bulova accutron and precisionist watches. In fact the precisionist watches have a smoother sweep than automatics. I love quartz, I think it really depends on what you’re looking for. Casio, timex, vaer, citizen, and others create awesome watches.

bought a certina ds action precidrive quartz movement as everyday at work watch, and the seconds hand was ticking exactly in between the seconds marks, i thought i was going to have a seizure when i saw that. i've returned immediately, and even tho they said it was a defect, it was so disappointing that i didn't want it back. the watch itself was very well done (steel bracelet), but that did it for me. over the years i've bought (and still own) a few citizen and casio watches and they all tick exactly on the second mark, no matter the price.

How do I know whether my quartz movement is high end

One You-Tuber I watched said the seconds hand not lining up with indices is designed that way due to ambient temperatures and gear expansion. Is this true?

I'm still wearing and enjoying my old Seiko Quartz 7548-700H from 1979. The second hand lines up with the indexes. It runs fast by around a third of a second a day. I change the battery (and gasket) when needed. I'm sure it's not good for 150m anymore, but as long as getting rained on doesn't let water in, I'm fine. It wasn't cheap when purchased. I guess it's actually worth more now, but I'll never sell it. Aside from the sentimental value as it was a gift from my parents, it's a well made and good looking watch (I like the orange dial).

I have a Seiko quartz watch for you. :) Are you familiar with the Seiko Men's SNE095P2 Solar Watch? I think it is one of the best entry level field watches on the market. It is very comparable to the Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180-03E. It is powered by the Seiko caliber v158, and I have found that it holds its charge as well as the Citizen. 100 meters of water resistance, 40mm case diameter, Seiko's lume, and a Hardlex crystal for less than $100. p.s. the second hand hits the indices pretty well too.

Maybe one day you can do a review of the best meca-quartz watches to consider, looking out for a quartz chrono and there are so many choice out there..

Tag Aquaracer seems impressive in quartz movement. Serviceable? I don’t know. Second hand I believe is spot on with indexes. I’d say Tag prides itself in this in particular.Excellent lume.

Soooo.....does this mean if my Geneva watch isn't fixable? I went outside when it was foggy and got moisture behind the crystal.

They're Quartz too. Just powered via solar instead. Which is amazing and fantastic!

Seiko is the best bang for your $. My first was a world time my dad got me in Bangkok in 69. It ran until the crystal broke in 93. I bought a SKX diver in 2007. But I love my Big Tuna I got from Japan. Your channel presents good and meaningful info. Keep up the good work.

Casio "Marlin" Duro MDV-106 (black), MDV-106G (gold) both have second hands that hit the markers dead on and are 200 M, I''m very happy with them both.

I got my SEIKO TUNA ON FEBRUARY 14, 1982 and it is still going strong!!!!

I have a Casio F91W... works... has an alarm and an hourly signal feature (the only features I want in an expensive watch)... have my dad's old Seiko Bell-matic; it does have an alarm but no hourly signal.... need that in a watch.

From what I have heard and read, it’s a problem with torque when getting a seconds hand to line up with indexes. That’s why the Rolex Oyster Quartz or the Grand Seiko Quartz movements usually use torque regulators so it hits the right spot 100% of the time and doesn’t get too much or too little torque. It regulates it way better, but makes it more expensive lol.

I just got into watches recently and added a few friends to my daily user Seiko 5. I bought a Seiko Kinetic and a Seiko Solar chronograph. I love the kinetic since it has a display back and I love watching the rotor moving around. The Solar chronograph is great and I love the lume on the Arabic numbers but I do miss hearing the rotor move very time my hand does something. Only quartz watches I'd ever consider would be Seiko, Citizen, Tissot and maybe Pulsar or Bertucci. Everything else i'll pass since it's either out of my budget or in my budget but I wouldn't even look at it(instagram brands).

My quartz watch is a Bulova Lunar Pilot because I cannot afford the “other” moonwatch. It hits the indices remarkably well, is absolutely stunning and dead accurate! My other space watch is a Strela which is mechanical but remarkably accurate for it’s price.

Minute hands in some quartz have a little play or s some gear backlash. But some gshocks analog have really strong and fit minute hands.

I have my father's 1983 Seiko SQ 100m Sports diver with the 8123- 6109 quartz movement. I think it has 5 jewels and is made of metal. Even has an early version of the Seiko Wave on the back. Still going strong after all these years.

Does the Seiko Tuna have a sapphire glass?
