Everything I’ve ever Knit for my Children

Hello! In this video I talk you through everything I’ve ever knit for my children including some of the first projects I ever completed, some rather questionable self drafts and some pieces I learned a lot from! I really enjoyed looking back over my knitting journey and I hope you do to! Thank you for watching, feel free to leave a comment or ask any questions you may have!

    "Don't sweat the small stuff" is a perfect motto! I am learning how to enjoy the process of creating rather than claiming victory for perfection 🥰. I love your slant-up sleeves jumper for the visual example of your improvised creativity. I think the best beginnings are from people who aren't afraid of 'mistakes '. In fact, sometimes a mistake is serendipity. Your 70's autumn colored vested is my fav; i love multiple colors and textures. You do lovely work. I have full confidence that you will have popular patterns when you start sharing/selling them.

    I am waiting patiently for Penelope's play dress. Or I'll have to go find a different child's dress and use your short row longer back trick. Also, if the yarn overs being larger bother you, I would recommend experimenting with doing yarn overs backwards (front to back) to decrease the amount of slack yarn when going from knit to purl.

    I loved watching your journey into knitting. And you are doing something I wished I'd done 40 yrs ago! Saved all the precious memories Yes my children were born in the late 70s so no microwave, dishwasher or automatic washing machine, to help with the daily tasks. Their garments were usually made from unraveled adult sweaters, to help save the pennies. But like you say they have such memories of your journey. I'm still learning which is the fun bit and now I can purchase gorgeous yarns as well. I've just been converted to Norwegian style knitting to be kinder to my hands, because like you I love to knit fast and furious but it's not done my hands any favours, so look after them. I love your style of podcast and have just started from your first after recommended by Inga of Knitting Traditions. You are such a natural love it. 👏PS I thought you might be Cornish with Penrose as a surname. My part of the world.❤️

    Hello Felicity, thank you so much for taking the time to leave me such a lovely comment! I absolutely love the idea of using old adult garments to make. We children’s ones, I’ve even got a few things I’ve made for myself that I don’t wear so maybe I’ll repurpose them! I currently only use Norwegian when I’m doing colour work though I occasionally do a few rows when I have lots of stockinette as my tension is pretty much the same in both hands now! So I’ve actually been to Penrose! We tried to get to the beach but my son was a baby and it was not pram friendly! If my daughter had been a boy she was going to be called Arthur as it had strong connections to the location! My husbands family (whose name I have taken on) can actually be traced back to Northern Ireland so I don’t think it’s Cornish in this case! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my content, welcome to the pickle family!! Xxx

    So fun seeing all the cute knits you made. The sweater with the two tight neck reminded me of my first sweater - also with a neck band so tight it would not fit over any head! The first time I bought indie yarn I had no idea you're supposed to unwind the hank into a ball. Once I figured that out I had to untangle that hank and hand wind into a ball which took 6-8 hours. I felt so stupid and a total noob! I have recently treated myself to a yarn swift and winder, which has been totally worth it. Although my husband is a bit sad because he actually enjoyed helping me wind up the yarn by hand.

It's also great for inspiration for those who are looking for something to knit for a baby. I loved that 70s vest and I totally think it looks cute on your son! As you might know (if you watched my previous episodes) I have knitted Lille Dahlia many times and my pattern has a once, cardiologist, top and dress which is brilliant because you can knit so many things out of it. Would you knit a leaf patterned yoke for a boy though, I'm wondering? Hahah I also have to say that I was wondering which of these tickled your knitting pickle :D? Big hugs from NZ, Marina

    Hi Marina! You should definitely make one too, I’d love to see all your baby knits in one go and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the process too! I’m not sure I would knit the dahlia for a boy, I do finding harder to find cute designs for boys. I’m hoping to make the kids matching colourwork jumpers for winter this year. I think the one that tickles my knitting pickle is the green self draft for my son. It’s so incredibly awful it just makes me laugh, but it’s also so precious to me. Thank you so much for watching! Hi, I have wanted to knit the Dahlia sweater for a while now, I've put it off because I have never used circular needles. But this sweater has really made me want to take the plunge. I have no idea which needles to buy I want to buy well and have looked at the Chiaogoo interchangeable set that most knitters seem to rave about, however they don't have a 7mm. Any advice on circular needles would be greatly appreciated. By the way I have loved your videos and your talent for knitting is outstanding.🤍

    Thank you so much Eloise!! I really like knit pro symfonie interchangeables, I’ve never had a problem with them and they come in a massive range of sizes and lengths. The dahlia pattern is lovely and I highly recommend it, though if it is your first time working on circulars you might want to give the flax pattern by tin can knits a go first as it’s free and highly detailed, Aran weight and comes in every size so you could practice with a child size maybe? OR do as I do and just go for it and learn as you go 😂 good luck and thank you so much for watching and your kind words! Xx

    Hi Deborah! Welcome back to the knitting world!! Yes I’m in the West Midlands, I grew up in Coventry but now live more towards the cotswolds! I am completely self taught, mainly through KZread so it’s totally possible, there are so many amazing videos out there for every technique your could possibly imagine. My first project was a tube scarf (a Gryffindor scarf for my nephew) which was basically a long tube of stockinette but was great for building muscle memory and learning how to work in the round (magic loop method). I then went onto baby garments using mainly free patterns found online. I’ve never used one but some of my buddies used the We Are Knitters, or Wool and the Gang baby blanket kits for their first projects as it has everything you need and supporting videos though they can be pricey. I fully believe the best way to learn is to just do. Do it and if you get it wrong, rip back, google it, then try again 😂 the knitting community is so supportive and encouraging and knowledgable, there will always be someone ready to help you when you need it! Aw I’m so excited for you!!

    I've just discovered knitting podcasts/videos, and yours is definitely the best I've seen so far. I've always used Drops Garnstudio free patterns, and haven't understood why anyone would want to pay for patterns. What's your point of view on this? How would you convince me to start buying patterns?

  • @_laurapenrose_

    @_laurapenrose_

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Thank you for such a lovely compliment! I think it’s a completely personal decision really, I’d say I use a mixture of free/paid for patterns, but the decision is rarely based on the cost, it’s because I love the pattern and want to make it. A good way to judge if a pattern is worth investing in is seeing if the designer has a free pattern, then you can see if you like the way they write/layout, then you know you’re investing in something you’ll enjoy. Also finding patterns with a large size range is great, tin can knits patterns for example include every single size from newborn to adult 5XL, so it’s a pattern you can reuse repeatedly. I’ve made 3 bowline sweaters all in different sizes and plan to make one for my husband so that’s 4 patterns for the price of 1. So I guess it’s about finding what works for you! Xx

    The "mis-stitch" on the little pink romper looks like a "belly button marker". A common practice among the Native American Indian tribes is to have one "mis-stitch" on an item as a reminder we as humans are not perfect. Have you thought about framing and hanging the green sweater in a memory/shadow box? Add a photo of each child wearing it. Place a scrap of unknit yarn with out without the skein band. (Great way to enjoy your accomishmentvafterbitvhas been outgrown.

    My sister-in-law just had a baby today, so you're giving me lots of inspiration to knit her newborn son some cute baby garments! I gave her a bear blanket I knitted myself for her shower gift and she loved it! An easy way to fix the striping issue is when you get to the end of the round where you change colour, pull up the right leg of the stitch below and knit it together with the stitch already on the needle: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKaKspNraaXUgso.html
