Crazy tip: I actually lay my z-lite pad on the ground of the tent site I have picked. I lay down on the pad to check my head-to-hill orientation. When I find the position I like, I leave the pad there and pitch my tent over the pad. Works like a charm for a good night sleep every time!

Good video, you rarely see the night time routine. Getting a good routine down is paramount to setting up quickly, breaking camp quickly and making sure you don't forget anything behind.

Especially forgetting things. I always do a last check around. I was with a group and we going on a trip from MN to MT and were car camping at state parks. One woman had her sleeping bag and tent in a box. Well she got distracted and she was a passenger in another car when the driver was good to go she got into the car and totally forgot about the rest of her stuff. . It was not until they got 200 miles away and at the next camping site before she realized she left it on the seat of the picnic table 20 feet from where the car was originally parked. I usually go car camping about 10 times a years so once the season starts I always store everything together in my garage so I just know exactly what I need and where it is. I also make like a basic packing list I alway check before I walk out the door. There is nothing worse than being 300 miles away and out of gas and than reliazed you left your wallet at home. I Actually had that happen to me and it was not good. I never felt so vulnerable in my life and the worse thing the hotel that I already paid for would not let me in the room even though it was already paid for, and it was 11 pm with no one else checking in for the room and the group organization that helped book the hotel vouched for me. I was totally out of gas and my phone battery was also dead after trying to call places to get some help.. Well I actually had to go to the police station where they gave me a copy of my license ( after much crying and having a breakdown of having no clue what to if they would not do it for me) and some friend let me barrow some money so I could eat and get gas to go home. But credit card company or a bank cannot help you even if you have a million dollars with no ID. They can wire money to a bank but I you have no ID you cannot get the funds.. After that lesson I have picture of my driver license on my phone and some money hidden out of site in my car. Ps the hotel I was at was where a lot of adapted skiers stayed for a adapted ski clinic I went to and the organization pulled there support and told there campers not to stay there anymore. Well there went 75 rooms for 3 night in the middle of the week in the winter not being used and lose of money. They closed down last year.

It is comforting and soothing to have a routine. I'm like my old Basset Hound, happiest when my routine is not disturbed. Thanks for the video.

Thanks! Nice hang. I hang food second. You can’t take your eyes off your food for a milli-second here: crows, squirrels, bears, and who knows what! I fry up some dry cured meat while I wait for rehydration. Collecting firewood is a good one to keep warm too.

ENJOYED your video. Love to camp in our great MN state parks, but never actually backpack. I got enough of lugging stuff on my back in the Army and when I got out I was disabled with a back injury. But I love sleeping on a good air mattress in the wilderness and warm sleeping bag and getting a great night of sleep. For some reason I slept much better camping than at home just as long as the raccoons do not fight over the food I thought was secure. Those creatures are loud when fight over your cheetos and hot Chocolate. Of course the other reason might be because when I camp I do not have my very loving cat sleeping on my face either. She get to stay home and protect the place from any mice. If I see her with a mouse I always pick them up and find a new home in the woods ( away from homes or farms) for them with a nice start on a little hole, some nesting stuff to get started and some food. I found one mouse in my home in the winter and it was -20 below outside so I went a bought a cage and kept her until winter was over and she had a chance to make it without freezing to death. But I think I got off topic as usual. So enjoy your travels and looking forward to some more videos. Thank.

Ya we were always curious about what happened when you got to camp when we watched your through hike!! Mac & Cheese!! That's Rugged Mountain Mister's favorite!! We have kind of a big tent for the 4 of us so finding flat spots big enough is always a challenge!! Rugged Mountain Sister uses that pump all the time! Her camp core is setting up the inside of the tent so she is typically blowing up 3 pads!!

mac & cheese and the air pump. 2 essentials for camp!

I know the food is about convince and weight,, but it seem like you could do just as well with box Mac and cheese especially if the cheese is squeezed out of package and would cost about $3.00 instead of $10 to $12.00. I would save the dehydrated food for more complex things like fried rice or something like that.

Yeah, it' just out of convivence. The mac & cheese probably isn't the best backpacking meal to buy, since you can easily make it on your own. I stopped at a Dick's Sporting Goods on my way to the trail and the backpacking meal selection wasn't great. I think the meals are worth it if you get something like Lasagna or Pad Thai. This was my first backpacking trip in a while so I wanted to treat myself

I didn’t see any items from the vegetable food group in that dinner!🤣

Looks like you are having fun. Do you not use a ground cloth under your tent? Might save the bottom of your tent from pokies and dirt. Have fun and hike on. Thanks for showing your campsite.

Another good thing about your pump is that it reduces the amount of moisture (from your breath) that ends up in your sleeping pad.

Thanks for the video! Question: I'm new to New Hampshire and have had to deal with more ticks than I've had to in the past. Do you have a "tick process", or use a repellent on your clothes or anything? Or maybe the ticks aren't as big a deal as I'm making it out to be :)

In this video, I had the frogg toggs rain jacket, it was only $12. On the AT, I had the Zpacks rain jacket.. $300. Neither one is will really keep you dry in heavy rain for longer periods of time

Nice! Turns out I don't like the lifestraw filter as much. I'll be going back to my katadyn befree. It's hard to get all of the water from the lifestraw bag through the filter.

I know some people pre-dig a cathole before they need it.

Curious about hanging the food bag, does everyone do it? I would think a hiker or two would just skip that routine and take their chances, basically putting everyone at risk.

When I was section hiking one year, there was a sign that said warning bear spotted in the shelter area. So a thru hiker goes, oh I guess I better hang my food. He then proceeds to hang it off a small tree so low that a human could reach it and only like 10 feet in front of the shelter. He was the only one sleeping in the shelter, so his problem, but still. I was hanging on the opposite side of the trail and so was my properly hung food bag.

What is the brand name of the airpump? I've been considering getting one.

Do you need to pay much mind to how close to the water source you are to minimize the number of mosquitos? or is it not much of an issue?

It's not much of an issue for me. I know some people like to stay further form water because of condensation, but it's not bad in my opinion. I'd rather be close to the water because I like the sound of it when I'm sleeping. It blocks out any snores or creepy sounds from the woods
