Hello, I noticed you ate a little piece of fruit at the market. If it was cut with a dirty knife, this could be the culprit. I have seen this type of food poisoning before, and it was super bad!

@@CafeMaddy On the topic of fruits, I got sick in in CDMX too and a local chef said I should watch out for salsas. They are often left outside all day and tomatoes rot so you only want to consume salsas from places that are very busy. For what it's worth, I returned for over a month a year later, had a rule against eating from street vendors, and never got sick. It was not the bugs, it is SO common for foreigners to get Montezuma's Revenge (and most dont do a bug tasting right before) which is honestly really interesting when you think about it. Now I see it as something that is meant to happen at least once and there is no point escaping it

@@CafeMaddy from my experience of travelling and tasting new type of food and especially cheese in Amsterdam, I had a severe food poisoning after cheese trying on the local market the same as you did. Because cheese made from milk this is the best environment for developing bacteria inside and therefore I think you really caught something from this cheese.

Another thing I wanted to add, it may be good to check with your doctor just incase of any parasites, they can be easily taken care of with medication you take temporarily but it’s very important to get that cleared out of the way to insure nothing harmful stayed behind!

according to Google, "symptoms start within 2 to 6 hours for the most common types of food poisoning." when it happened to me, it was after 3 hours. It was probably not the bugs but more likely the ice in the drinks. water contamination in Mexico is a big problem, and it was probably the only item where the source was unknown since you were drinking bottled water, and the soup had to boil. didn't you also have an upset stomach after a CA trip? your body was probably still recouping from that, and your immune system couldn't handle new/strange bacteria. I hope you feel better soon!

It was not the ice because no one in Mexico makes ice like Americans, all drinkable water comes from distilled water in jugs, there is no exception, cooking and doing ice with the sink water is just not a thing whatsoever.

Montezuma's revenge is real! It was probably the ice or the cheese. When i visited i was vigilant on what i drank, i ate just fine but i always had bottled water along with my food or coke. The one day i didn't i ordered an horchata it had ice in it, and that evening omg...i felt it. Pretty much all night just like you. It was the worst. I did bring some pepto so that helped and bought something at the airport too. I had a flight that evening to fly back home. Glad you feel better. ❤

I honestly agree, most of the bacteria should’ve been killed off from the bugs due to such high temperatures. Anyways I’m so sorry you got sick! Honestly food poisoning is one of the worst feelings in the world :(( also, thank god your flight was wayy later…. I can’t even imagine how bad it would’ve been to be on a flight with food poisoning. Really hope you’ve gotten better!

Oh and sounds like sea food poisoning to me. Or.... given the massive amount of food, also an indigestion. But that's not a medical opinion, just my regular experience 😅 Btw - those symptoms you mention at the end, a friend had them and it was a bacteria. If it persists it might be worth running some tests

Watching your videos make me so happy! Not because the food poisoning but because you always seem so happy! I'm sorry you got such a severe case of food poisoning. 😞You also do such a good job on editing. Keep up the wonderful work and try not to let this experience affect your future food adventures. Also, if you are familiar with fasting. I have reset my gut health with fasting. I do multiday water fast so I can help my gut when it is not feeling well. I would suggest a 24 to 48 hr fast if you are up for it. I used to take prilosec but once I started implementing multiday fasting into my life, I have totally gotten off of prilosec. Anyway, I hope you are much better and I can't wait for your next video!

In México it is very common for the tourists to get sick because of amebas. It is known as "diarrea del viajero" or "travelers diarrea". I think it was from the market or simply just for all the amount of food and the microbial load that your body is not accustomed. Hope you get well!!

this might not be much help, but i got a stomach infection from the last time i went to mexico with my family (which has been around 7 years ago). i don't remember having nausea or throwing up, but I did have full body fevers & dizziness as my main symptoms. i wasn't as adventurous as you were, since i mostly ate whatever my grandmother made and fresh fruits, along street foods like tacos and pozole. after i recovered, my mother explained to me that the cause of it was most likely from the street food OR the fruits and vegetables because of the water they use for the crops. i suppose american bodies are not used to the less strict regulations mexico has on clean food & water

I even threw up in my sleep ! which for those of you who haven't had that pleasure yet .... it coms out your nose and is dangerous because it can infect your lungs. Aaaaanyway. Turns out .... having fresh fruit, veggies, tap water and ICEd drinks did the job. Good luck in your recovery Maddy. I ended up having a really sensitive stomach for about a year after that. Fun times !

It sucks to get food poisoning I once got it at a Hawaiian restaurant in 2013 and I remember what I ordered, a chicken katsu with rice and lemonade I think it was Minute Maid. I remember feeling oozy and drowsy that I had to take a nap and then puke it was one of the worst feelings that I ever gotten until I got COVID in 2022. I don't know if It was the chicken or if the lemonade dispenser wasn't clean enough it's one of those reasons I got food poisoning. It's great you had a good time in Mexico City until the food poisoning and I hope you get better, stay hydrated and you can beat it Maddy, vaya con dios and hwaiting (화이팅).

I think it was something your friends didn’t eat or the water from the ice cubes or water in general. When we were in Rome recently, my husband got food poisoning too and only thing he ate differently was the pesto. He avoided pesto after that during the rest of the trip lol. I think it might help to google search reviews for the word “sick” and avoid places that have mentioned that word (even if the reviews are many years old). We started doing that after that experience and we have been good since lol

I think it could have been the bugs because they were just out sitting. Or if the tequila was contaminated:0 But it’s hard to tell until the end! I’m sorry you got sick ☹️ it could’ve been any liquids or contaminated meat also. I don’t want to say it was the pozole bc it just sounded good. The adventure still seemed like a good experience.

Wow, very impress that you ate bugs. You are much braver than I am for doing this! I just can't and I don't drink so that's just not possible for me. I would say that the food poisoning is probably from something you ate at the end of the day or during the evening. I got food poisoning one time just before boarding a flight from Japan to Canada and I am suspecting that it was from a meal that I ate about 4-5 hours before. I spent half of the flight in the lavatory! Take some good quality probiotic pils to help restore your gut flora.

Interesting to know food poisoning is also common in Mexico like Indonesia. Like some comments said, could be the ice if it wasn’t manufactured ice (u can tell if its manufactured and not from a block, at least in Indo) could also be something u ate the day before? A bit rare but my brother’s had food poisoning that hit late lol he thought he was safe cuz other bro got sick but nope😂
