They really need to start doing ball joints on BOTH the wait and chest for all figures. You get so much more range, and it looks more natural. I dont understand why they decided to give female figures only one torso joint. Maybe to preserve the sculpt or something.

I collected Xmen figures in the 90s. These are the best looking figures I’ve seen as far as being animated series accurate. I’m going to collect all of this series.

So Goblin Queen is the clone of Jean Grey and having both of their hair the exact same color in this wave was a little nod the Marvel Legends team deserves praise for. How does the ponytail Jean head on this new one fit onto the VHS jean grey body?? I feel like the cell shading on her was perfectly done but the head sculpts stink and , its just imo but I really like the new one's pony tail head.

@@NostalgiaUnboxed Yeah given all these clues Ive see online Mr Sinister is definitely the main villain this season. Its pretty awesome they are sticking with the comic books. Back in the early 90s we had no internet to predict x-men but now its a hard give away.

I've really appreciated how all-in they're going on this '97 wave. Hasbro be Hasbro, and at this point there's not really any avoiding that, but these two waves so far have stepped it up in ways that make it easier for me to overlook the other stuff! Cykes' face doesn't truly bother me, and the Jean Grey sculpt and paintwork (save for the alt head) come together quite nicely! Now, I can only hope that Beast and Jubilee are in Wave 3, with a mostly new sculpt for the latter. Great review as always! I was looking forward to what you had to say about this wave.

Nightcrawler is the only must buy for me of the wave thanks to the pinless joints and the sculpted gloves and boots. The old one just had them painted on and it looked weird in some angles. His legs also aren't as gummy as before. I was planning to give him the heads from the previous release, but I actually really like the heads he came with. I stupidly bought the VHS Cyclops and now regret it. Yeah, the new face isn't perfect, but at least the visor doesn't look half-assed. Plus, he doesn't have the cell shading. Oh, and the new one has the additional head with the blast effect. I really hope they give us an updated Byrne/Cockrum Cyclops that includes two heads and the effect. Jean is a massive improvement thanks to the pinelss joints. If I were to find Magneto on clearance at Target I would probably pick him up for the heads. No interest in X-Cutioner at all (he doesn't even sing 😛 ) and I'm torn on Maddie.

She's special

I prefer new Jean, the VHS is more expensive, and more gummy, they wasted the chance to make her pinless, and they can do that pretty easy. VHS in general is a waste, except for Wolverine, and Cyclops. New Cyclops is Jim Lee, but based on videogames, that's why this isn't gonna appeal for everyone. The GQ is a mix between her classic suit, and her Red Queen suit, i like the see through effect on her, also they painted her nails. She is on a different scale, bc they aren't gonna waste time to use those pieces in other figures. Selene, or Destiny will look great with those boots, even Emma. I prefer a more menacing Nightcrawler, but he is pinless, and I do prefer this Magneto mold than the one of series 1. The X-Cutioner is the most cartoony here, but almost like a CN show, like Samurai Jack series.

The Goblin Queen is actually Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey and biological mother to Cable. (hence the baby) And long story short, she eventually had a psychotic breakdown and took over the role of "The Goblin Queen", a more magic-based super-villain. That's a GROSS oversimplification, but suffice to say, she's one of the most feared villains in the 'X-men' mythos. Hope that helps. =)

So interesting, in the preview images, cyclops head seemed to be too high on his neck. But now it seems fine, makes me wonder if those images didn't plug the head in right. He doesn't seem to suffer from giraffeness. So unfortunately I have to spend money now lol. I gave up on collecting all animated figures. But I atleast want a 90s Wolverine, Cyclops and Jubilee (hopefully they finally make a good one). Maybe that Storm. Since I missed out on the white suited ones and only have the black suited one.

I really love that no matter how many times I watch both your X-men 97 videos, they will always be a pleasure to enjoy. This wave was a lot of firsts from a 90s Magneto that finally got a figure which complements the one from the first wave to brand new takes on the X-Cutioner and Madelyn Pryor which the latter tried to get her very first figure as a goal reward with a Haslab that sadly failed. As for the other 3, who doesn’t love a friendly Nightcrawler. And of course, the lovers themselves with a cleaner aesthetic for Cyclops and some interesting changes to Jean Grey. Fingers crossed we get a third wave of this series plus an ever growing fan base around this beloved series.

6:55 she has basically the exact same power set as Jean Grey so yes she can fly though it’s more of a hover that say how Rouge Flys, I mean in theory there is nothing to stop her and other psychics/telekinetic from flying as fast and agile as the like of Storm, Rouge or superman you just never really see it unless it’s someone like onslaught.

Madelyne pryor is a clone of Jean grey. Mister sinister made her because he wanted Jean and Scott to reproduce. Maddy is hella powerful and almost justified in her actions. Cyclops married Maddy after Jean died. When Phoenix is brought back Scott drops Maddy quicker than a dime to go be with Jean/Phoenix at this point. Madeline is a great character full of pain and power. She's awesome.

I think I’m actually going to go against your recommendation and get the new Jean to put the new ponytail head on the VHS Jean’s body. Marvel Legends tend to have bigger heads relative to their comic book or cartoon counterparts so I think it will look okay. I just really don’t like the heads for that VHS Jean.

I really wanted to get Cyclops from Amazon but he's soooo pricey now for $44.99, But I will get Jean Grey because my own Three pack Jean Grey broke on me and I will try to get this Cyclops from GameStop which has that awesome Jim Lee design along with that cool optic blast. Considering the box art matches the figure and the box art was drawn by someone deeply connected to the show, it's likely there were just some design changes happening throughout different phases of all of this. Try not to let a splash of color annoy you

When my brother and I were kids in the 90s, they didn't yet have figures based on the designs of the animated series, so while we had Cyclops and Wolverine it was the '80s X-Factor Cyclops design with the full bodysuit (the lame solid blue one with the underwear on the outside and the headcap) and the late '70s/'80s orange-and-black Wolverine design with the retractable claws instead of the yellow-and-black of the show. I don't know if these are worth $25 apiece, but if I found them at a reduced price at my local Target I might consider scooping a couple just to redeem that unsatisfied inner child.

@@NostalgiaUnboxed I just watched an online video of the original 1989 "Pryde of the X-Men" pilot (a hole in my X-Men animated viewing for decades) after making the comment and it appears that the designs I described, while definitely canon to a particular era in the comics, are almost certainly meant to have coincided with _that_ timing and the Konami arcade game that was released a couple of years after.

X-Cutioner's OK and his articulation's about what I thought it would be. Aside from being a cool looking figure, he's also got a whole Silent Bob vibe going on 🤣🤣... The Nightcrawler's a new sculpt, except for possibly the torso. He's also a different shade of blue than the other version. Head (and hand) swaps work pretty well, but the new heads seem to be ever so slightly bigger than the old. Bendy wire in the tail and toe joints would have been even better. In any case, I decided to retire the old Nightcrawler body and re-use his heads and sword hand on the new one. You don't really notice the different shade of blue between the old heads and his tail. Overall he's my favourite of this wave so far. Still waiting to get Goblin Queen and Cyclops, and decided to pass on the Magneto and Jean Grey though I'm starting to waver a bit on Jean... As you said, the most interesting thing about this Magneto is the head sculpts so if I can get it cheaply enough I might reconsider.

I believe you’re the first reviewer that disliked Slim’s head sculpt and I can’t help but 💯 agree with you, however with what’s included it’s a definite pickup. I passed on the VHS for that reason but the head sculpt by far is the best in the legends-line. At this point I just want to finish my Jim Lee X-Team and call it.

I’m into this line for classic versions of the team. Got Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler so far and they’re all pretty much exactly what I want. Gotta go back and get Gambit, Rogue and Storm. Maybe Magneto cuz he’s spot on too. Really wish they wouldn’t have given Bishop that generic haircut though. Hopefully we can get Beast, Jubilee and Colossus in the next wave.

@@NostalgiaUnboxed We know Morph, Jubilee and Beast are pretty much a lock. Beast and Jubilee show up in the recent trailer and Morph is apparently getting an upgrade to main cast status. Really hope Morph comes with that classic, weaselly head from his first appearance. Everything I’ve seen so far is the newer, blank face. Colossus is the only one I’m skeptical of cuz they haven’t shown or mentioned him at all but he’s one of my all time favorites and the line won’t feel complete to me without him.

Where they always get me with my X-Men is I wind up buying several figures to get the "version" I want. Like... I bought three different Storms to get her how I wanted. Gonna wind up with two Cyclops figures and I want those Magneto head sculpts. I will say in Wave 1, I thought Gambit and Wolverine were perfect. Except maybe the pins on Gambit.

Gambit pins are so outdated and really makes him standout from the new stuff. But excellent nonetheless

@@NostalgiaUnboxed I agree on the pins. I know a lot of people don't like his headsculpt, but that is absolutely my favorite Gambit headsculpt across all the Marvel Legends figures they've done of him. If they ever make an updated body for him, I'll probably swap that head on.

The scale is all over the place. Magneto from Wave 1 is small and Gambit is a little bit too tall. Now Jean is small and Madelyne is way bigger

That Nightcrawler looks amazing and X-Ecutioner too. But those cowards they censored the Goblin Queen. Madelyne Pryor deserves better

The only one from that line worth buying is Cyclops. I pre-ordered that figure only because of the optic blast and that is the only reason. Remember these figures are made from ABS not PVC so the finish will look glossy. ABS is also cheaper than Vinyl or PVC and they're still charging us the same price as the old material. Buyer beware.

The hair on the headsculpt for magneto was blocking the cape causing it to lift up. Take head off and cape and put them back on and it sits flat. Also that old jean is atrocious, new one is 100% better. Better paint, proportions, sculpt, head and articulation.

Nightcrawler has reuse on the torso and waist, as well as 1 hand… but the rest of him is new, new hands, new limbs, new heads.

I dont know if x-cutioner actually made an appearance in the x-men cartoons from fox kids back in early 90’s. However, I do know for a fact though that they did make figures of him and sold them with the xmen cartoon series in early 90’s by ToyBiz.

The new Jean is superior imo. If you think about it the previous jean had 1 balljoint at the diaphram, this jean has 1 balljoint at the waist. It's the same amount of articulation, the crunch forward and back on these two figures is almost identical. With the new jean you get superior face printing and full on sculpted detail throughout the body as well as the awesome pinless joints (which result in much sturdier legs on the female figures.). She went from being a figure I didn't want to my favorite in the wave.. and thats saying something.

I hate Cyclops and Nightcrawlers heads. Cyclops default head his face is way to soft and child like..should have kept the VHS Cyclops head. With Nightcrawler it’s more his weird wind swept Goo Goo Dolls hair lol. I feel all the faces seem too soft.. or something. Some are better than others but.. eggghhh. Over all I don’t like much of these 97 figures period. IMHO the retro carded/VHS versions won’t be replaced I. My shelf. They give me both the original cartoon vibe plus 90s comics Jim Lee vibe.. and that’s all I need. I will say the only issue I have with the VHS line is the poop cell shading….but a little nail polish remover, mixed with water gets it off. I may get a beast if they do one because I’m missing a proper beast and I’m not paying 80+ for him 3rd party lol
