Everything GREAT About Pacific Rim!

Фильм және анимация

Pacific Rim has a C- critic score, which is actually not terrible based on the premise. But I believe it actually steps beyond the borders of its genre....Nah. But it's still awesome and better than a C-. So this is why the critics are wrong. Here's everything right with Pacific Rim.

One thing that was major attention to detail. In the final battle, all the holes and open hatches of the Jaegers are sealed before they go underwater. Striker doesn't use its chest mounted missile launcher, and Gipsy doesn't use its plasma cannon. Why? Because those would be opening ports of the Jaegers, allowing flooding.

well plasma underwater is not really great since it would cause a steam explosion and only damaging gipsy's arm and striker can't really use the missle launcher since it would flood the entire chest area causing lots of dmg and there really deep in the water so even if he opens it and their's no dmg the missiles could be crushed by the water pressure hitting it.

I love the attention to detail. In the Hong Kong battle, Gipsy succeeded where the others failed because 1. it ran on nuclear power. 2. It was fast enough to dodge the acid 3. The head wasn't as exposed as CTs. And when Newt drifted with the Kaiju brain, it figured out about Cherno, Striker and Typhoon, but not Gipsy, which is why it managed to come in and save the day (the Precursors didn't throw out a Kaiju that specialized in dealing with it). Now THAT is detail

Fun facts: - If you'll notice in Raleigh and Chuck's fight scene, one of the things he uses against Chuck is an actual open-handed slap, followed by Raleigh dropping and using Chuck's weight against him. Now who used that exact same technique earlier in the film? That's right: Mako, during their "compatibility" montage. Chances are, Raleigh wasn't even thinking about it. He just went for it. They've only Drifted ONCE, and yet, he's already incorporating her movements into his fighting style. - Chuck is so antagonistic towards his father because when the first kaiju ever hit Sydney, Herc had a choice between saving Chuck's mum, Angela, or Chuck. He only had a few minutes to do so, seeing as Jaegers didn't exist back then and the only way to end kaijus were to nuke them. So he ended up picking Chuck, never knowing whether it was the kaiju or the nuke that killed his wife, and Chuck still resents him for it. - The Kaidonovskys hold a world record for longest neural handshake ever, clocking in at 18 hours. Theirs was a particularly interesting case, seeing as they were husband and wife, instead of being blood relatives. A true testament to how strong their bond is. - Mako's family made swords for a living. Her adding the chainsaw swords to Gipsy Danger is most probably her way of honoring her family's trade. - Raleigh was born in 1998; Mako and Chuck in 2003. - The blue streaks in Mako's hair symbolize the coat she was wearing the day she lost her family and the color of kaiju blood in general. It's her way of reminding herself that she WILL get revenge for her family someday. - The dominant pilots are usually on the right. (e.g. Herc, Sasha, Yancy, Stacker, etc.) - The pose Gipsy Danger does before going into battle - punching the left palm with a closed right fist - is actually a way of showing respect in martial arts. It basically says that the person doing it does not intend to harm innocent beings, and will only do so if provoked. - Among the last Jaegers, Cherno Alpha was the only one that didn't have escape pods. - There were over 51 Jaegers and kaijus made for this film. Every week, the staff would vote on their favorite ones. Most of the Jaegers were from countries found around the Pacific Ring of Fire, such as Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and more. - The reason Newt and Hermann are Drift-compatible is because, just like Raleigh and Mako, they have sparred before ... only VERBALLY, and on a daily basis, too!

The Kaiju have _major_ advantages fighting in water - heck, they're clearly water-based animals first and foremost, struggling to support their weight out of water. The Jaegers lose most of their mobility and their weapons, while the Kaiju only get stronger. Just watch how the Kaiju move in water.

A neat thing I noticed with this movie was the design of the kaijus themselves, they start off as animals you would expect to find deep underwater but the ones we see getting fought are faster and have special adaptations to help deal with the jaegers e.g. leatherback’s emp. But after the drift is preformed with the kaiju brain, the aliens find out about the plan to seal the breach so the send really powerful kaijus to try and take down the last of the jaegers before they can seal the breach

wasn't it said in the black that there were quite a few who did solo runs but only a handful where successful and taylor either picked at random or the one that went the best for the ghost drift he did, and I'm pretty sure Stacker and Raleigh weren't on the list, which, if I'm right, I'm guessing is due to both doing solo runs in old model jeagers so the data from the solo run was never transmitted and archived anywhere but then again if taylor did chose the one that went best, it would have either been stacker or Raleigh, since Raleigh killed a kaiju whilst feeling and experiencing his brother's death before getting the jaeger back to land which was when he finally stopped piloting, Stacker on the other hand had his copilot pass out then said "fuck it, I'll do it on my own" and killed a kaiju, so really Raleigh would be the best choice but probably wouldn't be picked out of a risk that his ghost would allow the more than likely debilitating pain of his brother's death to bleed over to Taylor thus possibly deterring people from using him for the run, or that may be why he's not there as they didn't want anyone drifting with his ghost due to some1 trying before and the pain bleeding over probably had some serious adverse effects on the person and they didn't want to risk it again, as for stacker in this case it'd probably still be due to him doing the solo run in what I believe was a 1st gen jaeger and they just didn't think to recorde the drift/run data since the knew everything worked and no-one ever thought someone would try or have to do a solo run Also the edit was done on my phone so excuse formatting errors and other stuff

Not to forget, the fighting is just as good every time I look through them. It feels gritting and gets me at the edge of my seat always rooting for the good guys. Pacific Rim was so freaking epic in scale and atmosphere. The bloody sound track alone and the music changes from Jeager to Jeager to Kaiju is just so damn phenomenal. It got me so hyped for a sequel that when the 2nd movie was announced i literally shouted "YES" in the middle of a crowded library. Then the heartbreaking disappointment when i actually watched it. I'd like to point out that one of my favorite elements in this film is that you could still recognize the anatomy of both the jaegers and the kaiju. In the Transformers films, almost all of the Autobots and the Decepticons looked the same. The only real distinguishing aspects were the tiny splashes of color from the paint. In Pacific Rim, the jaegers and the kaiju all had their own unique look, so on top of the movements being unique (As pointed out in the video), you could still just glance at them, even during the action scenes, and know who was who.

In Transformers, both teams are Cybertronians, who decided to pick sides and fight eachothers. I think the message there is "no matter what side you're one, you're still one of our race." Drift was once a Decepticon, but he was an Autobot in 4, and they were cool with it. In this movie, it's robots vs an alien race. If they had looked the same, it wouldn't make sense.

Yes, but what he means is that the differences between the Jeagers themselves are pretty big. Not just slight paint differences, but differences so big you can just see 1 second of a fight and instantly identify WHICH Jeager is fighting: Gipsy Danger with is chest reactor, Strike Eureka with its dual swords, the blocky, rectangular "head" of Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and his 3 arms, etc. Even the kaijuu have big enough diferences that you can tell them apart at a glance. Basically, you can see a second of a fight and instantly be able to say "Yep, thats Gipsy Danger fighting Knifehead", or "Thats Strike Eureka euthanazing Mutavore!". The same cannot be said for transformers.

  • @darthvader8164

    @darthvader8164

LetztezBatallion I kinda agree. The first 3 have everyone almost unrecognizable, but TF4 has some differences. Optimus has the knight look, Hound's the only fatass, Drift's a samarai, Crosshairs has a skirt-looking thing, Galvatron has a hole in his chest (is everyone trying to be Iron Man?)..... Well, that's about it. Can't find anything generic about the others.

One of the greatest elements of this amazing film is verisimilitude. You can "feel" the size and weight of both the jaegers and the kaiju. The scene where Crimson Typhoon activates its "super" attack, we see the rocket thrusters on its back get activated in a sequential order to help with the rotation of its torso (its hydraulics whouldn't be able to move that thing left and right so fast). Yeah, the scene with the boat-sword isn't that realistic but it is awesome! Amazing designs, cohesive story and good character development. Another great Del Toro creation! The sequel... well... good idea in theory... terrible execution (with a few virtues).

  • @Juniper_Rose

A few things! The music is fucking amazing. It has that mix of dreadful "Giant Monster" inevitability, like they're going to die, with that flare of superhero/giant robot action. Like "They are here to kick its' ass. And they are going to kick that ass." The comic establishes that it was America's idea to build giant robots which is kind of funny. "Screw it let's just hit them with BIGGER monsters. yeah, that'll show em!" Also, the Jaegers are shown to be incredibly effective. That's why the Kaiju kept coming back and kept losing; because the Jaeger program was so effective they had to really push their efforts to actually challenge the Jaegers. It didn't feel like they were limping along to the next fight. It felt like it was fully justified why they poured so much money and tech into the Jaegers; because they freaking WORKED. It wasn't an act 3 "we're suddenly strong/coordinated enough to win". You see why they've survived so long and it's because the Jaeger program was a massive success so you get this ACTUAL sense of apprehension when the Kaiju start pushing back harder and nearly winning; because we've already established the power of the Jaegers so instead of using their failures to show how tough the enemy is, we use the heroes to gauge that. We watch them win with less of a margin every time. It does a better job of displaying the strength because it's always getting closer to a loss.

As much as I loved this movie, my biggest complaint was some of the side characters literally came into existence to die. The Russian couple was praised for being so amazing with such an old Jaeger, and they literally died after throwing a couple punches. I know the Kaiju in that fight are supposed to be incredibly powerful [with abilities no one's encountered yet], but the Russians and Chinese basically turned into red shirts.

It would have been better if they had a bit more character development but them dying seems to go along with the plot. It makes scene that one or both would be wrecked in that fight.

Quite apart from the awesomeness that is monsters vs robots, I love this movie for introducing the idea of drift compatibility. We don’t really have a word for intimacy that transcends our social roles. You can be drift compatible within familial, romantic, or platonic relationships. It’s a concordance of purpose and feeling and intent. I think it was in service to this idea that we didn’t have to have the Final Kiss. Like you said, the core of the relationship isn’t about that.

Proving itself to be an incredibly durable Jaeger in comparison to Striker Eureka. Plus it’s always handy to have a nuke when you need to close off some weird underwater alien portal from and take out those pesky aliens while you’re at it.

Mad Max did what this movie couldn't IMO. By the trailers alone I thought Pacific Rim would be one of my favorite movies of all time. But it left me feeling disappointed. Then Mad Max came along, and again by the trailers it looked like everything I'd want in a movie. That time it delivered in every way and is now my favorite movie of all time. I'm still very excited for PR 2!

when car guys mean by a car being "clean", they don't mean it's clean, like not dirty, they mean it looks brand new and well maintained. That car was well maintained before the owner decided to skaddadle the fuck away from the kaiju because he/she could die from a kaiju. The car is still clean through the dirt and debris If you were sarcastic or joking, my apologies but I am very bad at detecting sarcasm on the internet, or a joke. The emojis dont help. Anyways, I hope you understand what car guys mean by a car being "clean". Have a good day.

Some people find the Drift thing confusing, so I'll sum it up easily. Imagine you and a friend want to play a video game, and each of you has half of the controller. You can't talk to each other, so you instead link minds, effectively making you two bodies with the same brain. It helps with control, otherwise you'd have pilots backtracking and second-guessing all the time.

Another detail I have yet so see anyone notice. Leatherback and Otachi were specifically designed to take down Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka. The aliens were building the gen 3-4 Kaiju in order to counter the Jaegers on an individual basic, Knifehead was designed to be able to avoid Gipsy Dangers grappling moves by having the knife on its head for instance. Cherno, Crimson, and Striker have 6, 7, and 10 kills respectively before Hong Kong, so the aliens had encountered them many times and knew what to expect. Otachi had the claw on its tail to stand even against Crimson Typhoons three-arms and acid spit to compromise Cherno’s immense armor, while Leatherback’s EMP was made to stop Striker and possibly Crimson Typhoon if Otachi failed. It’s details like this that make me appreciate the movie so much more.

Tbh I did not think about that, see gipsy was the one that I understand but wow it is kinda crazy, my confusion is wouldn’t the aliens know that gipsy was still living?

@@djsurf2254no, gipsy was just repaired by the time Hong Kong fight happened. And then to top it off, by the time newt drifted with the kaiju, gipsy was not allowed to be deployed due to pilot complications. Therefore gipsy had the advantage of being unexpected

I love how they made the jagers from the difference countries Russia is mainly knowed for hard hitting heavy armor and slow moving Japan and Chinese army's in the past are fast moving and quick hitting the u.s.a that's a tough one but there a medium not to fast not to slow but also not to armored or hard hitting there a all rounder of damage speed power and maneuverability

I loved how the film showed time and again that what might at first appear to be a weakness is really a strength. Raleigh’s unpredictable, risky and dangerous fighting style enabled him to beat the Kaiju using unique, unorthodox and outside the box techniques is just one example. He would use parts of his Jaeger and turn it into weapons that the Kaiju could not anticipate ….using the Jaegers cooling capabilities to freeze and destroy a Kaiju’s tail and using the Jaegers chest reactor to burn a hole through a Kaiju.

Also the wieght of the kaiju and Jaegers can be seen during fights. The punches take time to land, as do the blocks. They can see something coming but might not be able to move quick enough to block it or get out of the way. It really feels like giant 80 foot tall mechs and monsters fighting. Not puppets in a scaled down city.
