EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - WALKING WOUNDED Everything but the Girl are an English musical duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer, songwriter, composer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. The group's early works have been categorized as sophisti-pop with jazz influences before undergoing an electronic turn following the worldwide success of the 1994 hit single "Missing". The duo have achieved four top 10 and 12 top 40 singles in the UK and have received eight gold and two platinum album BPI certifications in the UK as well as one gold album RIAA certification in the US. Their cover of "I Don't Want to Talk About It" reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1988, a feat later matched by "Missing", which charted high in several countries and reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent over seven months on the UK Singles Chart thanks to a popular remix by Todd Terry which led to a Brit Award nomination for Best British Single. Their ninth album Walking Wounded (1996) set a new career best by entering the UK albums chart at No. four, and spawned the top 10 singles "Walking Wounded" and "Wrong". The band went inactive in 2000, with Thorn declaring that she would no longer perform live. Thorn and Watt, who did not publicise their romantic relationship while active, married in 2009, both released solo albums and said it was unlikely Everything but the Girl would be active again. However, in November 2022, Thorn announced an album had been recorded for release in the second quarter of 2023. Fuse, the band's first new material in 24 years, was released on 21 April 2023. The discography of Everything but the Girl consists of eleven studio albums, eight compilation albums, five extended plays, thirty-one singles, and one video album. The band formed in Hull during 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, and singer Ben Watt. ♥️💯‼️And I have the great honor of having in my discography eight CD-albums by Everything But The Girl (or EBTG). Because I have three duplicate CD-albums and the other two CD-albums are just one copy of each. So, I have in my discography AMPLIFIED HEART (1994) two copies of this CD-Album. I also have two copies of the CD-Album WALKING WOUNDED (1996). I still have a single copy of the CD-Album, which is a greatest hits, THE BEST OF EBTG (1996). Also a single unit, also on CD-Album, from TEMPERAMENTAL (1999). And, finally, the most recent record work, released on April 21st of this year, the CD-Album, FUSE. Also two copies. Altogether there are eight CD-albums by Everything But The Girl as I mentioned at the beginning of this comment. Honestly, I've loved this duo since I heard the radio version of "I Don't Want To Talk About It". And, in the mid-nineties, when Todd Terry remixed "Missing", it was a huge commercial success worldwide. On their latest studio album, FUSE (2023), the British duo is to be congratulated for the excellent work. It took them a long time to come back, but the new CD-Album was worth the wait. It's very well done. I love the ten songs! It's worth having an album, in my case, in CD format! I know all the previous works of the EBTG. But after "Missing" and AMPLIFIED HEART, Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn became huge international stars! I simply adore them! ♥️💯‼️Walking Wounded is the ninth studio album by British musical duo Everything but the Girl. It was released on 6 May 1996 by Atlantic Records in the United States and Virgin Records in Europe. The album saw the group adopting a more electronic and dance-based style, following the success of the remixed version of "Missing" from their previous album, Amplified Heart. Four tracks from the album were released as singles, including the drum and bass-influenced "Walking Wounded" and the house-influenced "Wrong", which became top ten hits on the UK Singles Chart, as well as the downtempo track "Single", which set Tracey Thorn's emotionally direct vocal against breakbeats, organ and strings, and "Before Today". According to Pitchfork's Ruth Saxelby, Walking Wounded draws on downtempo, drum and bass and trip hop music, "compressing the wide open space of those then-nascent sounds into a pop format". AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that the album was informed musically by trip hop and techno, albeit eschewing the "free-form song structures" traditionally associated with those genres. Treble writer Adam Blyweiss viewed it as a refinement of Everything but the Girl's earlier sophisti-pop sound that "replaced many of the duo's acoustics with reasonable digital facsimiles". Walking Wounded marked a change in the duo's approach to writing songs. Ben Watt produced various instrumental tracks, while Tracey Thorn wrote lyrics after listening to the completed tracks. In producing the tracks, Watt utilised samples from sources such as Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" and Stan Tracey's "Starless and Bible Black". Thorn later recalled: "We really believed in ourselves and that comes across in the sound. We'd finally got to the point where we realised what our strength was: the softness and warmth of my voice against urban beats; the warm and cold, the soft and hard contrast. We got it perfect on this record; it was our pop triumph.". Walking Wounded is the duo's highest-charting album to date, reaching number four in the United Kingdom and number 37 in the United States. By February 1997, it had sold 750,000 copies worldwide, according to Billboard. The album went on to sell over 1,300,000 copies worldwide. The album's cover art is unusual in that it features the barcode on both the front and back of the album. Walking Wounded was reissued by Edsel Records as a two-disc deluxe set on 4 September 2015. On 8 November 2019, the album was re-released on vinyl by Buzzin' Fly Records. Certifications: Certifications for Walking Wounded: Region Certification Certified units/sales: Australia (ARIA) Gold 35,000^, New Zealand (RMNZ) Gold 7,500^, United Kingdom (BPI) Platinum 300,000^, ^ Shipments figures based on certification alone. ♥️💯‼️

Remember hearing this for the first time, when it was released (back in 1996!!!) and it blew my mind at how futuristic it sounded. Tracey Thorne's voice really shines on this track, made even more sonically epic by the drum n' bass beats. So underrated,...still after all these years. A modern classic; and btw, it still sounds futuristic!

becky15707: This song's lyrics are somehow aimed at Everything But The Girl's former label, East West/Warner Bros Group, because they dropped them around 1993/1994, precisely when they reached the top with 1 of their biggest hits, "Missing". They were already shitfting their sound/artistry but the label refused to give them a new chance claiming they were already dead.

"Walking Wounded" Released: 1996 [Verse] Out amongst the walking wounded Every face on every bus Is you and me and him and her And nothing can replace the us I knew Nothing can replace the us I knew [Pre-Chorus] And no, I'm never gonna let you go No I'm never gonna let you go And now I know I had a choice Though you never made it clear to me I thought you never felt it deeply Now I'm never gonna let you go No I'm never gonna let you go 'Cause I could have loved you forever I could have loved you forever [Chorus] What do you want from me? You trying to punish me? Punish me for loving you Punish me for giving to you Punish me for nothing I do Punish me for nothing Punish me for nothing, for nothing [Verse] Out amongst the walking wounded Every face on every bus Is you and me and him and her And nothing can replace the us I knew Nothing can replace the us I knew [Pre-Chorus] You know I'm never gonna let you go Now I'm never gonna let you go And now I know I had a choice Though you never made it clear to me I thought you never felt it deeply [Solo] [Bridge] Now I'm never gonna let you go No I'm never gonna let you go 'Cause I could have loved you forever I could have loved you forever Or I could have left you forever I could have left you forever [Chorus] What do you want from me? Are you trying to punish me? Punish me for loving you Punish me for giving to you Punish me for nothing I do Punish me for nothing Punish me for nothing, nothing [Verse] Out amongst the walking wounded Every face on every bus Is you and me and him and her And nothing can replace the us I knew Nothing can replace the us I knew Nothing can replace the us I knew [Outro] Out amongst the walking wounded Every face on every train Is you and me and him and her Some days I think I could go insane Some days I think I could go insane Produced By Spring Heel Jack Written By Ashley Wales, John Coxon & Ben Watt Album WALKING WOUNDED (1996)

Back in 1994-1996 this music was the future, to me still is... EBTG were ahead of it's time, like Goldie, Blame, Blue Mar Ten, 4Hero, Transglobal Underground, David Bowie (in the mid 90's with 1.Outside & Earthling), Laika, Smoke City, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Björk, Moloko, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Herbaliser, 9 Lazy 9, Funki Porcini, the first three Hooverphonic albums, etc, etc. The sky was the limit on what you can do at that time with the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, a keyboard and some Jazz samplers.
