I was an FMF Corpsman with K co.,3rd plt. 3/1 Vietnam 1966. I spent my first months in the field eating1952 c-rations left over from the Korean War. I was HM3,so I was the senior Corpsman. I sleep with the plt.commander, right guide and 3 squad leaders (Sargents). I went on at least one patrol a day in areas from rice patties to bamboo jungles. I was usually shot at least every other week. Had more close calls that I care to remember. My junior Corman caught the tail end of a frag grenade three weeks before I was shot on an ambush. After spending five weeks in the hospital I was returned to the battalion rear pending orders. I was finally reassigned to first medical battalion for the remainder of my tour. I and up spending a total of seven years active-duty, and I am proud to say that I consider myself more Marine than sailor.I was presented my Purple Heart in the hospital by Lieutenant General Lewis Walt, who is the top Marine in Vietnam at that time. He told me that the Marine Corps was proud of me and that I was a "Marine".

I had this Master Gunnery Sargent who loved his corpsman. He helped me get my fmf pin. He would get me and another corpsman together during field ops study and sign off our fmf pqs. He was badass. At the time he was the longest serving marine on camp Pendleton. Thanks MGySgt Graves.

The last month and a half or so I was in Iraq we were kind of in transition or whatever so I managed to knock out my PQS and board within about 4-5 weeks. Got pinned in front of my platoon (I picked up HM3 before we deployed and got pinned in the field with my dudes. I hated the HM2 and HM1 that came out, so as a fuck you to them I actually had one of the Cpls pin me).

Greeting Nicky, im actually gonna go in February 2019 to Camp Pendleton for FMTB. Was just curious about injuries. What if you sustain an injury such as pulled back muscles, knee pain, etc....?? Can you take your own ibuprofen or knee wraps? Are they allowed? Are DQ'd for those things? Can you make a video about stuff like that or possibly just respond back to me? Thanks. Very respectfully, HN Garza

My college roomate's best friend was a FMF medic at the begining of the GWOT. I just assumed he was a marine because he came to visit with 2-3 young marines. The marines treated him with a lot of respect for a 22-year-old. Later on I heard about the fire fights in iraq, the corpsman running into a fight to put on TQ on wounded guys, riding back and forth between front lines and aid station to make sure his marines were taken care about. Mad respect.

Nice job guys Doc J, HM2(FMF) Johnson here, Camp Lejuene, good info but you guys should mention that until the Marines call you "Doc" you haven't gained their respect. You are just a corpsman to them. When you have that title then you know you've made it. I spent 12 years straight FMF until I went to a hospital. I ended up retiring at 15 years.

As a retired Army Infantryman I have mad respect for our Medics and the Navy Corpsman. Our Medics get jacked up by different branches in the Army also. My Medic buddies some have worked in the hospitals but like the comradery of being in any combat arms units like Infantry, Armor, Cavalry, Combat Engineers, and Artillery. Medics assigned to Airborne units really love it there because they are also Paratroopers. My friends in the Marines tell me the same for their Docs also.

Blue side in a hospital in totally lax. Feeling Rollie's comment there. I worked in sterile supply and the OR, usually side by side with officers. When I was scrubbed in assisting a doctor, we'd talk to LTs and LTCs like we talked to fellow HM's. They were our circulating room nurse and it was not your structured, typical military environment. We were on a first name basis with a couple of them, and even hung out outside of work. One nurse and her husband lived a block down the street from me. Even did a white water rafting trip with a couple of our LTC anesthetists. It's a slightly different ball game in the hospital setting. I loved it as much as I loved being in the Fleet.

Went to Hospital Corps School in 1966. First Duty assignment was Quantico Naval Hospital. Volunteered for FMF training and went in early 1967 (Camp Pendelton) Volunteered for Vietnam. Spent the rest of 67 and 68 in Vietnam. No Navy Regs back then. FMF were automatically USMC regs. Might have stayed in if I could have stayed Green Side. HM3 on discharge at the age of 20. When I volunteered to go to FMF, I was being trained to run the Orthopedic Department...9-5 job. Too boring so I volunteered to do what I thought I was trained to do. Semper Fi my brothers.

The question I have to all who are serving and who had served as a HM ( Corpsman) What path would you consider taking after leaving active duty, as one here was able to work as a civilian on a base? How many remain in the medical field and do they know the choices when they get out? The Green side , you learn the tradition and respect and honor, becasue it is very structured in the green, whereas the blue side you are so relaxed as it was mentioned in the video .

The only reason why I want to enlist in the Navy is because I want to be a greenside FMF corpsman. I honestly could not imagine working in a clinic or hospital or on a ship. (Kind of ironic for enlisting into the Navy). When Matt said that there were only 1 set of orders to go FMTB I was kind of concerned about not being able to go greenside. Does stuff like that happen often? And if I am in good shape and can handle being FMF, would it be likely for me to go greenside?

I have an HM contract (extremely excited, lost 50+ pounds to sign up and got the last contract they had available) I have heard that people at the top of the class in A-school typically get sent to the more technical C-schools regardless if they want it or not, is that true? And with things seemingly winding down in the desert compared to a few years ago, is it still likely that most males will have a chance to go greenside? And finally, if I was to start blueside for any number of reasons how easy or difficult would it be to switch over to greenside? Thanks and great video by the way!

Hey bro! As of right now the problem is that the green side is overmanned, and even as the top of your class usually fleet returnees get whatever they want, we had a kid in my class who really put the effort to get the top grades because he wanted it to go FMF really bad, at the end a Second Class Petty Officer snatched it from him, just because well, he had more years and rank than him, but not the grades. But hey! Get your stuff together and try your best, and who knows, maybe you'll get it at the end!

Justin Molzhon Green side always has something open, its a wide field, you don't necessarily have to be with the 0311 boys, there's always a chance to earn your pin, it also depends on your COC and how much they support you, I have a friend who was a good kid in the reserves, got sent to FMTB, did a deployment and came back pinned, don't give up bro!

I was just wondering, is there an air medevac specialty for corpsmen or is that an army and air force thing? And do you have any general advice or tips or anything for a soon to he HM? My biggest fear is not knowing how I'm gonna react when I'm faced with my first real world experience. I've had some experience with dressing changes after my dad had a major stomach surgery, the Doc let me change the dressings for a couple weeks while he left it open and I had to stuff gauze in, but that's totally different than a trauma situation.

  • @RaulPerdomo

    @RaulPerdomo

Justin Molzhon You will always remember the face of your first "TOD", train like you fight, ask, listen and pick other people's brain, every first in the real world is different from every one, just don't get cocky and let your training kick in, you'll be fine. I had a Chief in Corps School, he was attached to a marine air wing and he did CasEvac and MedEvac, earned his FMF and MAW pins with them, and he went in as a Air Crew, like I said, he was a blue side and got orders to go green side, made the best out of it.

Hey Nicky! I'm going to boot for HM and am going in as E-3, I actually need advice as to if I should take my state exam for EMT. I've done my extra clinical hours and ride time and I go to bootcamp in November. My state exam for EMT is coming up but I could always reschedule it, but I'd really like your opinion on if I should get state certified, I do plan on traveling but I'm not sure if being state certified would get me a bit farther than by just going in without it. If any Corpsman has advice it would greatly be appreciated as well! Thank you!

  • @RaulPerdomo

I got you! In my class we had several EMTs who failed "The Corpsman Killer", back then was the 4th test of Corps School, 68% would fail the first time, and 48% the second, forcing you to a Chiefs Board and pick between going without designation into the fleet or to pick any other rate, what I can advice you to do, is to finish A School and apply for your Navy COOL, that way you don't have to pay for the test and it'll be recognized by the Navy. To answer your question, it really won't make a difference. Rah!!

I mean females dont really work alot in the military but marines are usually where they are the least. Mainly due to the USMC testosterone filled embrace the suck mentality. But however if a female is in a rifle platoon she is usually really really respected due to the ability to keep up.

hey nicky I'm wondering how realistic is it to try get certified for mecp and become a navy nurse while in green side, Ive been thinking about going green side for like 2 or 4 years than just be strictly blue side but I really want to be a certified rn and want to be a officer eventually too. I normally would ask my recruiters but none of them know much about my rate. I leave in 32 days btw and thank you for your videos you and jt have helped me a lot.

Ezequiel Franco I ship out in august as a corpsman. From my understanding it goes off of what the navy needs. One of the guys if im correct ended up going corpsman later. He didnt initially go in as one. But the one on the left had a corpsman contract after MEPS like me. I got a corpsman contract after going up to meps. There is a high demand for corpsman but it goes off what the navy needs maybe for a period of time they might not need some or have alot of openings it just depends on the needs of the navy.

Hey man! The way it worked for me was i talked to the recruiter, went to MEPS for the asvab and physical, then talked to the detailers there. Those guys are the ones who sort out your contract, not the recruiters. As far as "getting a contract" it's sort of luck of the draw, so just hold out for one and don't sign anything that isn't one. That's the best advice I can give.

Realize they will put other things in front of you, other Ratings or at least that's how it was. What ever the Navy needs is what those guys at MEPS will try to talk you into. And DO NOT believe the "oh, you can go Corpsman later" BS, because that's what it is.....BS. If the Navy is undermanned in a certain area you'll find it all but impossible to cross-rate into something else. If you want to be a Corpsman, then hold out for it. They might make you wait, but the decision is yours.

I did 10 years active duty, the last 7 with the Marines. The guy on the left had it totally correct about the duel chains of command. It's frustrating as hell when the Gunny tells you "everyone" will be here or there and the Chief Corpsman sayings they have something mandatory for the same timeframe. You would think after all these years of Doc's serving with the Marines they would have figured it out by now. I used to give the Company Gunny a list of all the guys we needed to see for physicals/immunizations etc and when.....and I did it as far in advance as I could and let them hash it out. I would also remind the Gunny as the time got closer, so if things fell through (on their side) my rear was covered.

When I was on float (WesPac) it got even more interesting. While onboard the ship the Corpsmen went into the ships medical rotation. We stood watches as the duty Corpsman, saw sick call of not only "our" Marines but ships company and were responsible to the ship's chain of command etc.... When we went ashore on an operation, my chain of command changed to the Marines exclusively. One of the "rubs" is and I told this to the Marines, "if they put me in a position that might violate my medical treatment standards they can, but first they will have to sign a statement saying what I told them and that they agree to take full responsibility for what happens after". If they signed, it's on them. If not, then I did what was medically indicated, because the Marines CAN'T save you from the Navy when it comes to bad medical practice. While I loved serving with the Marines, I wouldn't let them hang me out to dry either. And yes, there are some, not a lot, but some Marine Corps officers and Staff NCO's who's memories about what Doc told them can get "selective" you might say when things go bad. As the old saying goes, "if it's not in writing, it didn't happen".
