Everyone Stops At Ashok Anna Hotel For Kappa Rotti! LAXMI JANARDHAN Yermal, Mangalore Udupi Highway

What began 20 years ago as a highway stop to provide breakfast sustenance to truckers has now morphed into a must-visit on the informed traveller’s itinerary for its comforting, earthy kappa rotti, a fluffy rice flatbread cooked on a clay pan minus sans any oil. The thing to do is to taste it with the thick curries, chicken or vegetarian, that are dished out by Ashok Anna and his family at this eatery, Hotel Laxmi Janardhana, located in a town called Yermal, about 30 kilometres from Mangalore. The setting is quite rustic, and the crowd an eclectic mixed lot. But it is the food that rules here, as I discovered during a busy morning here.
Hope you enjoy this one. Take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

I agree, i used to eat this for breakfast since my childhood and it was one of the common breakfasts not only at my home but neighbours home too. I still remember having this with honey as a kid. In konkani we call this "kapor poli" .

The worker is exaggerating before the camara 😂 My grandma used to serve me more than 55 years ago called "Kailoli" in Konkani. We used to soak them in coconut milk with Cardamom and Jaggery.

I think he meant that serving in hotels may be this family has started. As I have only seen this dish prepared at homes and never in restaurant and hotels.
Happy to know that u tasted Kappa rotti. Kappa rotti ( kayloli in Konkani) is one of my favourite snack since childhood and my mom prepares at home. It goes well with left over chicken gasi or fish curry of previous day in our houses.

Kripal Sir, Huge appreciations exclusively for this episode
Kappa rotti or uppu dose also goes well with fish curry. This dish was made by my amma mostly for breakfast. I still have the clay pan (vodu) used by my amma even though there is little crack in it. I sometimes still use it and prepare Kappa rotti. But this dish truly makes me nostalgic. Thanks sir for this lovely video.🙏
Very happy to see having our kappa roti at our native place 🎉😊😊
What a camera work absolutely brilliant❤
Kripal.....strength to you and your team. It is amazing how you are creating a culinary encyclopedia for cuisines of Karnataka. Your effort to document dishes like Kappa Rotti is very praise worthy. Hope this will result in greater interest traditional recipes cooked in traditional methods.

In bhatkal we call it as Akkirotti. U can find this In Bhatkal, Shirur & Byndooor surrounding areas. It is combination for Chicken/ Fish curry in our area just like chapati/mudde/roti/parotta combo for nonveg gravies. Even for vegetarians it goes well with thick spinach curry/thick coconut chutney or Joni Bella.

This place is also famous for - Fish Meals served in Bananna leaf, awesome fish dry items. Guess Kripala Amanna Sir didn't visit the hotel during lunch hours. The owner, Ashok Anna is a bit of a shy person. So he couldn't explain things well to Sir. Do visit this place during lunch time..
It's more like an Appam na rather than a dose sir that u keep reffering it to as .....inthink Appam batter is fermented n this is not may be so it's called a roti n so is different from an Appam also diffrence is in grated coconut that goes in it

Good morning dear Kripal - So it’s the Kappa Roti vlog . When you post the picture on SM , I thought it was a cross between Aapam & Neer Dosa 😀 Look forward to another interesting vlog . Even I haven’t heard of Kappa Roti . Loved the kitchen shots , relatively small but run by the family . Since the family is cooking I am sure that all the dishes would be prepared with love and on a traditional basis 👍👍 Need to try making KR at home ( gonna be a challenge given the preparation required for making it ) . Wow it would be an awesome combo of the KR with the Saaru 😋😋 I was wondering as to why they were not using oil to make the KR . Is it some kind of non-stick clay pan ? Agree this eatery has eclectic customers 👍 Looks like the Kozhi Saaru is a super hit 😋😋 Indeed this is a unique breakfast and so happy that you are thoroughly enjoying it . Another piping hot KR and you seem to have been totally blown away by the Kozhi Saaru 💯💯💯 Lovely to have a glass of hot glass of Coffee 👍 This was another hidden gem in terms of unique & flavourful family cooked dishes 💯💯💯 Thoroughly enjoyed this vlog and it’s a no-brainer that you would be returning for some mouth watering lunch 😀😀 Thanks - You also take care and have a wonderful weekend. Trust we would get to see part 2 of your Chikmangaluru moto vlog tomorrow. Loads of love & respect 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯

Hi Rajesh, yes the kappa rotti certainly reminds one of an appam and remotely of a neer dosae. One of our viewers has summed this family (of dosae) rather nicely in a comment above. Speaking of making the rotti at home, the batter seems vfairly simple, what lends authenticity, and flavour, though is the use of the clay pan. Should go nicely with a Sunday meen kuzambu. Speaking of which, wish you a great weekend. Yes, we do have a Chikmagalur vlog scheduled on Kripal Amanna Vlogs tomorrow, this one blew me away. Hope you find it interesting too. Have a great weekend. Cheers!
