Everyday Carry: More Than a Pistol

Embracing the philosophy of everyday carry means realizing your kit will change based on where you are, where you’re going, and what you’ll be doing on a given day. And don’t forget to think about the places you have to travel through to get where you’re going. That means everyday carry in 2022 is about a lot more than a CCW and a pocketknife.
You also have to be comfortable with shedding certain items, or adding them when your clothes and activities allow. Sometimes you have to get away with what you can carry while wearing a suit - other times, you can haul around a small bag that contains everything you might need to address an emergency situation without drawing any attention.
In this video, Mike Glover of Fieldcraft Survival gives you a tour of his personal everyday carry 2022 checklist that he has developed utilizing his many years of experience as a Special Forces operator who has worked in myriad environments around the world. What he chooses to carry, and not carry, with fall/early winter clothing could give you some valuable insights into your everyday carry setup.
First, he breaks down the contents of the Patagonia fly fishing bag that he prefers to a more tactical-looking bag, precisely because it draws less attention, especially where he lives on the Provo River. Since he thinks of the bag as “extra” kit, he packs it with med gear. He says you can never carry enough tourniquets, considering you have four appendages, and anyone to whom you may need to render aid also has four. So, he has a couple of those in there, but there’s more to it.
“Don’t just think about applying a tourniquet and first aid and trauma. That’s the easy part. Think about what you would do after the fact,” he says. “If I’m rural riding UTVs overlanding, I want to have the ability to splint the wounds. So you’ve got the Rigid Immobilization System for Extremities (RISE). It’s just a splint that allows you to immobilize an injury.”
He also adds a ChitoGauze XR2 Pro hemostatic bandage to his “fly fishing” bag to create a fairly substantial med kit.
But if he’s going somewhere where the bag can’t go, he still has a base of EDC gear that is ALWAYS on him. The list includes a Tac-Med Solutions SOF-TT Wide tourniquet in an IWB carrier next to a SIG Sauer P320 XCarry pistol with a 21-round magazine in a magnetic retention Fieldcraft Survival IWB holster worn in the appendix position. Yeah, that’s a pretty big carry gun, especially with that magazine, but Glover says he can pull it off because of his larger frame. You may be able to as well, or you might need a smaller option to avoid printing. The Carhardt vest he prefers in cooler weather also helps prevent the long mag from printing.
He also carries a Surefire Stiletto Pro flashlight because it’s slim, easy to carry, rechargeable, and has multiple light intensity settings. He carries a flashlight that isn’t mounted on his pistol for the simple reason that he often uses the flashlight for utilitarian tasks that don’t require a firearm.
“I don’t like gluing [my light] to my gun because I like to use it offset, and also, I’m going to use the light more often in utility, like ‘What’s under the hood,’ ‘What’s under the car.’ You wouldn’t want to use it for that tethered to a gun. Don’t be that guy,” he says.
Beyond that, he gives careful consideration to everything else he wears including shoes, hat, pants, and belt, determining how they will function if things get hairy, and what other uses they might have in a pinch.
The more you know, the more shit you can effectively deal with when things go sideways.

Not sure if you’ll ever read this but MSGT Bitner was from my hometown. His whole family is here still. We have a tribute to him at the local VFW. He’s a true local hero. It was extremely amazing to see how he was so respected in his profession by you. Makes the world seem smaller.
Mike, I really enjoyed this. It just popped up in my feed so I gave it a whirl. What I got was a straight forward, unbiased, logically and calmly presented discussion. I agree with much of what you said and have been using a few bags, vests, etc to conceal carry for years. I cannot drive comfortably for any distance with Appendix carry. So I improvised. Good solid information. I'm a subscriber. 👍
Solid content...this is I love to watch your videos. You always boil it down to the need to know.
When I go to the beach with my family I wear a full leather belt, White's logger boots, 21 oz denim jeans, 2 layers of flannel shirts, 1 puffer vest, a fanny pack, a cross strap pack, my IWB AND OWB holster, a Kenai chest holster, a ballistic helmet, 37 IFAK, my personal Sat Coms and more. Yes, it's slightly warm and no, I do not have room for sunscreen or water but I'm prepared for a North Korean invasion by sea.
First heard the no flips from Pat Mac. It makes really good sense. I rarely wear them anymore.
Always solid content..always considering/reconsidering what I carry..now looking to add a bag for off-body, higher capacity med equip
Good and solid information as well as instructional. Always a pleasure to set aside time and listen to you teach from practical and functional well of knowledge. Thank you sir. I appreciate the time you give and invest. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Great information! Thanks for your time Mike!
Good grief! you are so articulate! Meaning an absolutely a great speaker! This is my. First time here and I am sold and onboard. Thank you!
Always great content from Mike
Great video. I almost always wear leather work boots. I've been in many situations wearing shoes where I needed boots - I've been in very, very few situations wearing boots and I needed shoes. And flip flops are a non starter for me.
Hy, I wear good and Functional Close and shoes like you. A jacket, is in my Car or workplace. I always had a lighter, a Pocket Knive, a Firesteel with Tampons and Tissues in my Pockets. In my Purse, i have Hard needles, a light knive, a Metal Tool Card and a Picklock Set. Picklock is a Hobby, and this is so easy. Greatings from Germany!
Nothing like pants, flannel, Carhart, and talking about hypothermia in the middle of summer

Great video, great channel, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and for everything you have done and continue to do, keep'em coming, God Bless
Excellent video! Definitely going to implement several tips that you shared from this video!
Mike great information and appreciate you giving us specific details of your gear! Thank you for the knowledge transfer that you are always willing to give unselfishly. Thank you for your service, along with Shawn Ryan, Andy Stumpf and the group at GBRS, all warriors who give back! I take every opportunity to share your knowledge with my family and friends. The content as always is epic! Marcus Aurelius: “No carelessness in your actions. No confusion in your words. No imprecision in your thoughts.”
As a paramedic all this medical equipment is focused on treating trauma. A myocardial infarction kills an American every 60 seconds (Heart disease and stroke statistics-2017 update: A report from the American Heart Association. Circulation). Carrying one tablet of 300mg of dispersible aspirin which can be chewed, by the patient has been shown to decrease mortality by 23% [ISIS-2 (Second International Study of Infarct Survival), Lancet]. Just a thought.
A pistol mounted light is better, imho, for those of us with less training. Two hands on a gun is superior for the less proficient.
Love it Mike.... Timberland Boots 24/7... Heavy Mashers, God Bless 🙏🦅
Carhartt hoodies can do similar effects as the vest. Just realized this, because I roll with hoodies more. Thanks for the video again.
Im the same mike. Kia bracelet and i have a non milspec shoulder strapped fanny pack. Holds everything perfectly.

I first heard of the no flip flops thing from nutnfancy. Haven't worn them when I go outside since.
This is great info once again but I’m in Utah also. Love being prepared but can’t wear a fucking winter vest, long sleeved lumberjack shirt and pants in 105 degree temps. It’s T shirts and shorts to TRY & not get heat stroke. Cause I’m that fat kid also. Keep the content coming bro. Luv your stuff.

I found if you want to wear pants, good fellow pants from Target possibly athletic fit which is the ones I wear are really great! They are not super thick, very bendy and also breathable. Perfect for CC for me here in the Phoenix weather lol
I constantly have to argue this point with individuals as to why I carry every single day even to take the trash out. I have to thoroughly break down and analyze for these people the reasons as to why. it seems to be some disconnect between mindsets of different types of people. and I can almost tell to the point of just looking at someone whether or not they would even comprehend the point that I would be making as to why I carry every day. it is like it is a different language.
I am in! New sub ✌🏼😎 Best regards from eastern Oregon 🇺🇸
Informative and well made video 👍
On disability now but was a correctional peace officer (jail guard) Something I carry as well is a light duty truck tie down strap. Just in case I have to drag someone wounded out of an active scene, as well it could be used in a pinch as an extra tourniquet. My own personal thought I prefer flash lights and other gear that use AAA or AA batteries instead of USB chargeable. My thinking is again in a pinch the batteries go flat it is easier to quickly swap the batteries then to have to wait and charge it. Im probably over thinking that but thats normal for me lol Oh and since I am licensed and well what the heck i always carry a vhf/uhf hand held radio with me as well.
Great insight
I need sunglasses even when it's cloudy. Sensitive eyes. Literally will close my eyes in the sun.
Awesome stuff
Edc in FL. No flannels, no jeans, no boots. Board shorts, tank tops and chanclas.
Tire sandals are still fantastic.
I understand appendix carry is technically a quicker draw however it really impedes and kind of coruching movements or lifting items so I prefer to carry on my hip. Thoughts?
I wear sunglasses even when its cloudy

Virginia resident here. (Va Beach- coastal, hot, humid) I have 2 different carry pistols, one for winter, one for summer with shorts and a tee shirt. Both with red dots and WML. I also carry that smaller rig (cz p10s, but any compact/subcompact will do) with a Crossbreed Liberty Band (belly band w/reinforced webbing to receive holster clips) utilizing my current AIWB holster (no need for special shell) when I go walking in the neighborhood with my wife wearing jogging shorts or sweatpants. As for medical, I took a Stop the Bleed course, and consolidated my medical down to twin pack of chest seals, hemostatic compression gauze, and SWAT-T tourniquet- all laid flat and electrical taped together with a tab of tape at the end doubled over so I can stop it apart quickly in an emergency and get to any of them. They’re all sealed in their original packaging, and I’ve been carrying that medical so far for about 6 months without issue. Still looks to be in good condition without any other necessary pouch. My other carry gear is a Tale of Knives leather pouch on my left hip with a Boker metal pen w/ glass breaker, a second flashlight and a multi-tool, and on my right hip, a fixed blade knife. The only edc that changes year round is which pistol /spare mag I’m carrying in an appendix rig. Otherwise, it’s always the same. Hope this helps fellow Southerner!

Oh, one more thing- I carry additional medical in each of our vehicles. Additional CAT-7 tourniquets from NAR, compression bandages, splints, first aid kits, etc., but the medical I mentioned above is just what I carry on myself. Being that I wear shorts 6-8 months if the year I passed on other medical carry options, and I’m not carrying a bag or backpack on me everywhere I go. I keep those in my vehicles.

My number one takeaway from this video is that Mike is Asian. Been watching for a while and never knew (or cared) that he was Asian. He looks like a default white dude to me 😅
Which vertx pants are those?
Any bag options for those who may be paralyzed and in a wheel chair? My son was beaten and stabbed during riots for wearing a red hat that read Make Pizza Great Again, as he was delivering pizzas. His life now revolves around making everything work with his wheel chair! He has been using a vertx tourist sling bag for about 6 months now!
All about carrying what you will likely use in daily events, at work and out and about. Light, you are right, multi tool, I have used plyers more than any other tool on it. TQ is key, stop art bleeding now. Like Grey Man idea. Good info.

Statistically I'm not likely to need a seat belt, helmet or homeowners insurance either. I mean this with all respect but if you find that edc pistols are, "incredibly cumbersome" you either aren't aware of the options available to you or you likely need to work on your physical fitness.

Surprised no Knife in the video but as MG says dependent on the situation and environment your kit/ EDC will change. I'm sure he carries a knife when he sees the situation changing.

Your videos are very informative. #TrainPrepareBeAware
Why not a light on your firearm and a separate utility light. Don’t like holding a light separate from my firearm . If you deploy your firearm in a self defense scenario , I wouldn’t want to have to look for my light as well. I do want to positively identify my target so I somewhat disagree with Mike on this point.
@LivingGrey
2 жыл бұрын
Most operators don't like lights on pistols because of the propensity to give away your own position. They carry a separate light and train to use that light in conjunction with their pistol at night. Same reason GBRS runs lights on their AR's without a pressure pad. One accidental press of the light and they die.
@internal_dialogue9290

@@LivingGrey That all makes perfect sense but he was just discussing EDC. I’m not saying a light on your firearm is the right thing, I just disagreed with his reasoning behind it. No disrespect meant. It’s ok to have differing opinions. Totally understand the thought process of no pressure pads for lights in a mission type scenario or even a self defense situation.

@@internal_dialogue9290 I agree with you completely, why not have both. Most pistol lights can be activated while keeping both hands on the gun. I personally think you can’t beat having a pistol light especially if you’re out at night or your edc is also your home defense.

I tend to agree here. Especially with the onset of reliable/rugged “micro” pistol lights, I.e the TLR7 which I have on ALL my EDC guns purely because it’s more comfortable to carry. and a weapon mounted light is NECESSARY in my opinion for a defensive firearm. Like I said it’s just my OPINION lol obviously I ain’t gonna tell Mike Glover he’s wrong hahah.

Some voices are just made for radio/broadcasting.
To each their own, but you should carry a handheld light along with a weapon dedicated light. Why would you not put a light on your pistol? Like they say, "it doesn't cost you anything" and it makes you more combat effective. Bottom line is you must be able to see what you shoot. This was more of a commercial for items his company sales rather than a pro tip.
