    I went to a couple live tapings of the show when it was on, and Ray would come up with jokes so quickly. They would sometimes re-do the same line 3-4 times and he'd come up with a different punchline every single time. He's a genius.

    No dispute about Ray Romano's genius, but for the record almost all sitcoms have multiple versions of some lines and bits of business written into the script, which isn't to say that there isn't ad libbing as well, especially by someone like Romano or Robin Williams. This is both because they want to see what line gets the biggest laugh and because it keeps the audience from getting bored watching multiple takes over a period of a few hours. By the way, the whole system for shooting multi-camera sitcoms in front of a studio audience has been largely unchanged since it was first developed for I Love Lucy, in large part by Desi Arnaz and Karl Freund, his director of photography. Because shooting on 35mm film was expensive, Lucy and Desi agreed to a lower salary in return for syndication rights, which was another major innovation and made them and their heirs extremely rich.

    @@DGaryGrady Except that with other sitcoms I saw tapings of, they had a script person show the actor a new line. Such wasnt the case with Ray, he would ad lib on the spot

  • @DGaryGrady

    @DGaryGrady

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@endokuken1678 Again, no dispute that Ray Romano's a genius, but remember he wrote a lot of those scripts himself, so even if it was sometimes a pre-written alternate line, he was very possibly the one who pre-wrote it. By the way, speaking of ad libs, during production of the Road movies Bob Hope and Bing Crosby regularly tried to top each other with ad libs, and they were both so competitive and so rich that they each hired a team of writers to study the pages of the shooting script scheduled for the next day and come up with a pre-written set of ad libs for them to memorize.

Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett and Patricia Heaton were the best supporting cast Ray could ever hope for. So sorry that the show could not go on for at least another few years. One of the funniest things I'd ever heard Ray Romano say was from a conversation, he'd talked about publicly, that he'd had with his real-life wife. She was complaining to him about the fact that he'd used some instances from their personal life together in, "ELR." And, his response to her was, "Go cry in a bag of money." It was just stunning to hear that as Ray's punchline and was very funny.

    But after all his "penis" improvisations and I'm sure more sexual innuendos, he had it coming. Audience, especially women, ate it up.v@@EricCharlesGraham

    it's rare now when a sit com makes me lol. Most of The Big Bang Theory doesn't even get a smile out of me, but a couple of times it made me laugh out loud. One I can remember was when Sheldon was trying to prove he had a sense of humor and he pied his room mate.

    @@robbyddurham1624 everyone has told me for years I'd like it. I don't think it's funny either. My sister sent me a DVD of a comedy called Will and Grace saying I reminded her of Grace. I never did watch it.
