I've always thought of Battalion Recon marines as the Marine Corps suedo equivalent to the Army's 75th Rangers(albeit Recon marines aren't SOCOM) in that they are advanced infantry like Rangers, and Force Recon is morCommander. Similar to SEALs but again Force Recon answers to the MAGTF CO rather than a SOCOM combatant commander. Is this a naive assumption?

@@McKillahGuerilla not at all, you are correct. I had the chance to go to the Raiders when they started, but I had friends who warned me about going. @@ConservativeTeacherReacts I've done alot of research and from the outside looking in and from some recon marines I have met that's just the impressions I've come up with. I know that in the 80s when SOCOM was stood up then USMC Commandant Paul X Kelley said something along the lines that the Corp didn't need a elite spec ops unit because the Corp itself is elite, pretty much echoing the sentiments of WWII Marine commanders in resistance to the establishment of the WWII era Marine Raiders. Which I always thought was ironic because it was the Marine Raiders who gave America one of its earliest retaliations against the then Japanese empire and they were America's first official spec ops force.

IIRC, when MARSOC was formed, the Corps disbanded Det. 1, the 2nd Marine Division's Small Craft Co., 1st & 2nd Force Recon Companies, and used those manpower slots for MARSOC. They also moved the FMTU under the MARSOC umbrella. The active Force Recon guys, that didn't got to MARSOC, got moved into Deep Recon Platoons over in the Division Recon Battalions. As far as EOD supporting MARSOC goes, they have their own EOD Tech, but can draw additional resources from other units. You might also want to clarify that guys assigned to FAST and RTTs are Marine Security Forces, not Marine Security Guards (the guys that guard US Embassies). And lastly, nothing on Radio Recon? Overall, it was a pretty good overview of the various units and their capabilities.

There are 18 billets (last I know) at CAG (Delta Force) for Marines all filled by Force Recon and Marsoc Marines (some grunts have made it) and they are shooters in the squadrons in stacks. My old roomie in 2nd Force in 90s did 15 years in CAG Recce squadron after passing all testing. There are Marines in ST 6 but only in support billets never in stack but they deploy and go on missions and operate. There are bunch of Marines in “Orange” the National Reconnaissance asset. There are a shitload of Marines in CIA Ground Branch including high leadership. All former Force Recon or Marsoc some former teammates of mine and in their 50s now. Force Recon is a great foundation to go on to tier one units it’s highly respected creates hard very capable Warriors used to doing more with less and like rest of USMC becomes a used asset I in wartime when Marine Corps is running areas of battlefield. Force Recon have been black Gear raid force specialized since the 1990s but can do green side missions too. All NCOs

An agency that's been in the news lately is HSI with the Diddy raids...maybe a breakdown on them would be an idea. I've never heard of them prior to this. Apparently, they are a division of ICE but are trying really hard to separate cause their mission is so different.

I wonder if MARSOC will ever have a tier one element. Maybe, maybe not. To me, I'd want every branch to have a tier 1 element, including Coast Guard and Space Force, but thats just me. On a more realistic note, I think there should be a Reserve Raider Bn that focuses on Latin America, and Raider Warrant Officers like the Green Berets have. Big USMC should bring back the Paramarines and have them take the DA mission from Recon so that Recon can focus on SR.

Being a part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security & not a part of DOD like every other branch might also have something to do with it.

There's no need for a USMC tier 1 unit. As a matter of fact, there's nothing new that MARSOC brings to the SOCOM table that isn't already contributed significantly by USASOC, NAVSPECWARCOM & AFSOC. And the Coast Guard actually have a tier 1 unit or kinda at least, it's the MRST.

That would be wrong. If no MARSOC you would still put the work back in the hands of Force Recon . People think there are a lot of people on spec ops but that isn’t true- guys retire, people don’t pass training and acceptance, folks get hurt and lose their lives( sadly) . Talked to a neighbor who was a former force recon marine - he told me like guys who are Army Special Forces ( rangers and green berets) that the training and work takes a hard toll on people’s bodies and lives. The plan was always to have a marine contingent JSOC was created but marines resisted it cause they feared losing vital assets ( there was always talk of getting rid of the marine corps all together in modern history and Force Recon was disbanded before in marine history) Before MARSOC joined special operations , Force Recon did the job , albeit mainly under marine command. Marines a slimming down akin to what the Royal Marine Commandos are , and emphasis will be on more specialized training for the average marine infantry . Scout snipers have been eliminated and the job is being passed to Marine Recon. But Marine Raiders will now be in places that can free up assets like Navy Seals, Green Berets, Rangers , Air Force Reconnaissance ( former combat weatherman) to rest and retrain or to join in joint operations

@@dallasyap3064wrong on that, but not shocking. The one thing that MARSOC did better than other SOCOM elements: intelligence and integration of it into all levels of organization in and under a SOTF. Not saying Army SOTBs or other enablers are bad -- far from it. No one's ever going to hear much about that part, though.

We deploy with, support, allied forces so, for example, if we're embedded with the Korean ROC Marines or a Britt Commando unit, we allow that unit to take direct advantage of all US forces fire support elements - mortars, rockets, the full compliment of artillery systems, naval gunfire, close in (helicopter gunship) support, and close air (fixed-wing) support. Most of our guys are communicators and/or scout/forward observers. I'm second generation ANGLICO and I had two primary MOS designations of 2531 Field Radio Operator and 0861 Fire Support Marine. I was also a 9962 Advanced Parachutist. Dad was a logistics officer with ANGLICO. Marine Raiders were around in WW2 You can get a contract in Recon, I had received a contract in recon before I transferred to the officer program But the others are based on selection After the raiders were disbanded at the end of WW2, the only special teams for the marines were recon and crash, fire, rescue Edit: most of these units are so new that they are still adolescents, all of these excluding SRT and Recon came post 2001

Former Recon Marine here and I am usually find General Discharge's information to be pretty close to the truth. However, this is a strange set of comparisons. The vast majority of MARSOC came from Det 1 (who were all Recon Marines) and the rest of the MARSOC was filled out by the Force Recon Companies. MARSOC now has much more funding, a larger national mission and tasking that Recon, and a different selection process...however they are both cut from the same cloth. The rest of these units are great American, fantastic Marines, and very specialized at what they do, but really don't even come close the same official and unofficial selection processes. PLEASE understand that is not a dig, but even the ANGLICO guys on this thread are laughing at the comparisons. What is even more silly is the ideas that some many folks didn't know ANGILCO are JTACs???? They were some of the best JTACs in the military LONG before that term was even in vogue. The internet is becoming a stranger place by the day!

Former USMC Infantry Team Leader here 2/6 Golf Co, 2010-2014, 2 combat deployments to Afghanistan, Marjiah and Warsheer, To my knowledge i honestly thought the bulk of the rebirth of MARSOC in 05 came from 2nd and 4th Recon being that 2nd and 4th were the most elite units in the Marines at that time 2nd and 4th Recon was our version of SEALS correct me if im wrong i worked with MARSOC on one of their work ups during a 4 week training event my Squad was put in the beautiful role of the partnered forces lol I just thought 2nd and 4th were the first of the 05 rebirth of MARSOC

FAST (Fleet Anti-Terrorism Team) and MSGs (Marine Security Guards) are completely separate. MSGs are the ones that are standing duty at embassies and consulates around the world. They fall under the MCESG command (Marine Corps Embassy Security Group). Now, MCESG has something similar to FAST called MSAU (Marine Security Augmentation Unit). In short, these MSAU teams are made up of actual MSGs and are smaller than FAST units, but they are able to respond much quicker due to their size, their involvement with the State Department, and their connection to MCESG. There's more differences and similarities to mention between FAST and MSAU, but FAST Marines are *not* MSGs and MSGs cannot become FAST Marines (while they are MSGs).

One thing I never understood about Special Reaction Teams, I know they're Military SWAT version, but where exactly do they get deployed? When on Deployment in Middle East, what exactly do they do? Do they do exactly what regular SWAT officers do but in Afghanistan, Iraq? Do they add support for Marines going from house to house around cities on raids? Next question, when SRT are not on deployment, they're home, on Base, what exactly do they do? Do they do everything regular SWAT officers do across the States, but on Military Bases only? Or do/can they join regular SWAT Police off base?

Yeah, I was a Marine Corps MP. I understand that the Corps ended the 5800 (military police) MOSs. and contract out police duties to civilians. Double check with your recruiter and do your own research. The Marine Corps is worth it if you still want to serve. Maybe focus on Recon/Force Recon/MARSOC Raiders instead if I am correct about military police. I separated in 2004. Just a heads up.

Thats not how it works if you wanna get to cag(delta) you just have to be a ranger ,special forces oda ,seal,82nd,raiders,tacp ,cct,pj, recon marine, swcc etc basically most units you dont have to change branches to join a tier one unit unless you wanna go to sts rrc or nswdvg and completely restart as a new guy and do basic training and most raiders stay raiders and i have never heard of raiders becoming seals i have only heard of recon marines becoming seals
