As a youngster,I luv prickly pears and would sport sore fingers (stained as well) to be able to enjoy this fruit. I used a small knife to cut out the needles but that was so time consuming. Please come back and let us know how this works out on these small needles.

try the freezing method, it's a game changer! Rinse fruit, put in mesh bags in freezer for a day or two. place in colander over a bucket or bowl and let thaw. Half the juice will run out on it's own and the rest you can easily mash out with a potato masher. I did a side by side experiment and got more juice freezing then burning/peeling!

It's people like Cheryl that make the world go around. And sift out all the dodgey stuff to bring that sweet sweet sifted goodness. Okay that's enough overworking of that metaphor. 😁

Good to see you, Mark! If Cheryl is half as good a nurse as she is an engineer, her patients are well cared for! The continual improvement and refinement of her design is highly commendable. Most people come up with something that's "good enough", and leave it at that (there's nothing wrong with that approach!), but she's taken it to the next level. I'll be replacing my flat panel sifter with this.

It would really be great for loofah pods. You crack the dried pod cut the loofah to size and throw them in there the seeds are rolled around and fall out. You simply scoop them up and package them. It would be good for dried herbs as well. What a wonderful idea and even me who has arthritis will be able to lift it up and move it around because it looks very light. Well done!

This looks like a great product! I would like to see a version that uses bearings instead of the wooden rollers though. It may increase cost, but would increase the life of the frame from friction, which would benefit heavy use.

We had a similar rig for cleaning grain on the farm. It was larger and run by an electric motor. The screened drum was slanted and the grain ran in the top end from an auger and out the low end as the drum turned and into an elevator that took it to the bin. It was quit effective at removing weed seeds from the oats which helped keep the oats from heating in the bin from the moisture in the weed seeds.

FYI. I just ordered one. The discount code did not show up for me. I called and she is adding one to every order today because she knows that we all came from SSM. Thanks Mark!

Update: it finally cooled off enough for me to try this. Amazing product! I hand sifted my compost before with a homemade screen. Four hours of backbreaking work, with my tumbler it took me 30 minutes to get a wagon full. I’m so impressed with this investment! It’s worth every penny, I would highly recommend it! Customer service was great! Happy compost, happy plants! Blessings!

Awesome! Well done Cheryl and Mark. These are incredibly useful. I built one about 10 years ago, but it was for sifting gravel when I lived in Arizona, so it's more heavy duty. Mine is probably the same length but much larger in diameter (2 feet), so it's easier to get the shovel inside. The frame is made out of lumber, but I used casters for the rollers, non-coated steel mesh for the screen, and steel for the flange, rod, and ball bearing mechanism.

Can you make something for gardeners to shred their greens for faster composting with a handcrank? I don't have electricity in my community garden & don't want to use gasoline powered. In the olden days there used to be hand cranked shredder for roots & stuff to shred as feed. I remember as a kid growing up in Germany we helped out with shredding. Wish I could find such a tool.

@@MaryJohanna If you have a narrow shovel with the short handle you could do like I do. Stack the pulled weeds or spent plants and then just stand over the pile chopping from above. Gauge the thickness of the stack on how easily the shovel blade gets through to a complete chop. I often do a H2o fermentation compost by packing these cut up greens in a bucket. Sometimes you can add a second amount and turn the mass to sink fresh stuff. Put a cover material on it to block out the smell (like horse manure!) After they change to a duller green and are pretty stinky they can then be piled and layered for the rest they need to break down. I get buckets from my pet loving friends so have quite a few at any time.

Try an internet search for "manual food shredder" or "manual compost shredder." How about a manual food mill? Or a manual reel lawn mower? An electric lawn mower that you can charge the batteries at home? A knife and cutting board? A meat grinder?

K.P. I don't see any time soon because that wire has more than double the price and I have to special order from China. I thought if I made 1/2 heavy duty wire and gave the option to add a 1/4 inch screen it would be a better option. I hope you might consider this one. I do believe you will be pleasantly surprised about speed and ease of your sifter ❣️

That looks like a chile roaster in Santa Fe, NM. (USA). They took bigger ones that are identical to that and would have flames beneath them and roast green chiles, then bag them up and sell them. You’d take it home, scrap off the charred skin and chop them up and make pickled green chiles, chile peppers or green chile sauce. And the smell in the air. Nothing like it.

I got a better idea for you. Do a rolling scoop design where it picks up items from the wheel barrel and then also at the same time on the other end dump them. Then you can create a simple mechanism to drive the whole thing using a small belt to the wheel of the wheel barrel and you can then use the forward momentum to get more done just by pushing the wheel barrel. You can then do a whole plot of land with this trick in a day.

Made something similar. Mechanically the same, except mine is motorised with a water hose. Use it mostly to wash vegetables and fruits. Currently prototyping in a shredder/grinder attachment. Meant to breakdown leaf into smaller to allow more compact saving area for compost.

Hey! I'll pay you to make one for me! But only if it's going to cost less than an arm & a leg... Mostly bcuz my arms are almost worthless, so that counts my arms out for trade value! I need one to mix my soil. Bcuz I have Rheumatoid Arthritis in my elbows as well as hands, something as basic as mixing soil is rather difficult for me. And I like to get all science-y with my soil mixes! I thought of getting a small cement mixer, however, the way things are made these days, and prices jumping sky high, well... It just doesn't seem worth it. But something like THIS ! With the option to hold the soil in while it's mixing, then I could remove the outer cover and sift it into soft, fine soil ! Seems like a winner!! Oh, and if I ever need help turning the handle, I could use a belt and hook it up to my old record player to make it turn! You know, just like they did in the Looney Tunes cartoons!! 😆😆😆😆😆 😳 I bet it would work tho. 😳

P.S. We also shred a lot of leaves around here. I mean - A LOT !! So ANYTHING invented which makes that process lighter on my arms, is definitely something I'm interested in!! Currently we use the vacuum option on the leaf blower. Leaf blowers are sooooo heavy for me! And we have 5 old growth Live Oak trees which pump out leaves twice a year. Their leaves are very, very, thick. Which means they take about 3 years to break down - and that's IF they receive continuous moisture. BUT- If they're shredded, they can turn into garden gold in at least half the time!! Oh - and acorns mixed in are the thing that chews up the leaf blower mulching blade! There's NO WAY I'm going to pick out acorns from leaf piles!! So a good, long lasting blade, will definitely be needed. just sayin...

Hi Mark, Here is a helpful hint for the maker of your sifter: If you would make these gadget's out of all food grade metal, and had a door on one end: Those gadgets could make great Pepper Roasters. Roast peppers are very popular in green chili gravy used in Mexican dishes. I love to use roast chili's in enchiladas, ETC. Jessie from Arkansas USA

mark, i made 2 sifters a few years back. i think they are 25 and 15mm. they are wooden frames which sit perfectly over my wheelbarrow. i just shovel the material on and move it back and fourth a few times, ive actually got an old wheelbarrow plastic bucket that i changed cause its cracked but i sit my second frame on that

It's a practical size. Sifts, airates. Ground dried leaves can improve farm soil and maybe help retain nutrients.

Super cool product! I use it all the time to sift through our gravel and to remove the weeds and underlying dirt. It makes a HUGE difference in how our yard looks.

And they're great at bingo halls, too! But, I like it that it will knock off thorns from cactus fruit.
